The Second Chance of Reincarnator

Chapter 46: Pretending

Dark Jewel's Corner, Corpse Collector HQ, the Siren's Den Street.

Paintings of the famous Blessed One adorned the walls, situated right beside stairs leading up to the third floor of the building, and the sound of distant whispers echoed through the halls.

"…"

Malrick walked up the stairs.

He was a cold-eyed gentleman, and in the Dark Jewel's Corner, he was the boss of the Corpse Collectors.

Following his flapping coattail, Thomas and Kael made their way up the stairs, and soon after, entered the attic of the building.

In there, there were pale- and gray-skinned individuals seated in whatever space they could find, and they were currently putting together some coffins.

"I won't introduce you to them, but they are all Corpse Collectors, and they're currently putting together some coffins.

"We received an order from the Guild yesterday that apparently some party died during a raid, and we're supposed to go get them."

Malrick said coldly, turned to Kael, and asked.

"Well, what do you think? I've heard good things from Arthur about you, and apparently you were responsible for Ants Village.

"I am sure you could've received some commission for doing that, but instead, the branch of Rask City got it instead."

"I didn't do it for money. I just went to retrieve my brother's corpse, and while at it, I brought the rest as well."

Kael said.

"It does take bravery to go there. You were lucky that you didn't encounter any Rav'akari. I heard some nobleman and woman went missing over there even after the Ants Village slaughter."

Malrick said.

"Mmh…"

Kael nodded, and while at it, he checked out the Corpse Collectors and saw that they almost looked as lifeless as the corpses they collected.

Joyless, with empty eyes and unsmiling faces.

"Thanks for taking the time to show us."

Thomas shook Malrick's hand, and then with Kael, they left the Corpse Collectors building and made their way down the cobblestone street.

With the neighing horses and rolling wagons coming by, they had to walk single file to avoid being trampled.

"What do you think?"

Thomas jogged till he was walking right beside Kael and saw that he was quite unimpressed about the job offer.

It wasn't a surprise to him, as the younger generation thought of Corpse Collectors as nothing but jokes, even though it was a really dangerous job. Love this story? Show support at MV2LEMPYR.

When he said that it was respected job, he was lying through his teeth, as they were really shunned from society.

It was because the smell of the corpses clung to them like a second skin, and it was hard for them all to have proper social lives because of it.

It paid well, but also, in the end, it wasn't really a job that many considered worth the cost of their sanity.

Arthur and Thomas didn't want Kael to become a longtime employee of the Corpse Collectors. It was only a good opportunity for him to explore the outside world.

Thus, in a few months's time, they planned for Kael to leave the Corpse Collectors and find a new job that was less emotionally taxing.

"I think I'd rather go mining than collect corpses."

Kael said, and kicked a pebble off the sidewalk—it flew, and got trampled by a passing pedestrian.

"Why is that?"

Thomas asked.

"You saw them. They all look like they'd rather jump off a cliff than work even one more day over there. It's a job for the joyless."

Kael said with a frown.

"You don't have to become like them. Your brother, Soul, has talked to me about you countless times. You always helped him to smile with your pranks."

Thomas said, touched the corners of his lips, and lifted them up to make a smile.

"I know it has barely been a few days since your brother passed away, but why don't you pretend to be alright and bring some joy over to the Corpse Collectors?"

He looked at him with the fake smile created by his fingers, and Kael absentmindedly kept walking down the sidewalk.

"…You want me to pretend?"

"Haha, yes! The whole Blessed thing is all about pretending. You must already pretend to be Outlaw, so why not pretend to be happy too, yeah?"

Thomas said with a chuckle.

"Uh…"

Kael scratched the back of his head, nodded weakly, and said.

"…Fine, I'll take that job. It better pay well."

"It will, and you still need to pay me back, so of course I want you to take a well-paying job, hahahaha!"

Thomas laughed loud enough for the nearby pedestrians to turn, looking with a raised eyebrow.

Dark Jewel's Corner, School of Divinity, and Mysticism.

Standing in his room, Kael looked at himself through the mirror's reflection and saw that his hair was growing slightly long.

With the scissors in hand, he started trimming his hair and shortened it to a more manageable length.

When he was done, his hair only reached his ears, up to his forehead, and at the back it was neatly trimmed and even.

He put the scissors down and looked at his joyless-looking face in the mirror, which almost looked like a stranger.

"Smile~"

Kael pulled the corners of his lips into a big smile, then let go, and the smile stayed on his face.

"Alright, let's pretend~"

Outside in the garden, the students gathered around a small fountain and chatted with each other excitedly.

"I love Miss Morwenna's classes, as they're always outside. What do you think, Kael~"

Finn asked with a smile as he sat on the edge of the fountain, dangling his legs in the water, and beside him, Kael dipped his feet in the water.

"It's really nice. This is a class of Mysticism, right?"

Kael asked with a smile on his face.

It took some by surprise to see him smiling like that, as he'd been pretty distant ever since he came to the school, but it looked like he'd gotten used to all the strangers around him.

"Yeah~ I think she will start with teaching you the Mind Image. It's the same thing that we all had to learn, but no problem, it's easy peasy~"

Finn said, and then saw Ivy sitting close to them—with a sneaky smile, he splashed water over to her—and her dress got slightly wet.

"Ahh!"

Ivy turned around with a fuming expression on her face, and she threw a rock at Finn.

"Will you stop that, dummy? I am now all wet!"

With a grin, Finn just kept whistling, and at that moment, Morwenna, the teacher of the Mysticism class, walked over and greeted everyone with a bright smile on her face.

It was clear that she was a very gentle kind of woman.
