The sun blazed high above the sea, its golden rays dancing over calm, endless waves. Rael stood at the helm of their modest ship, wind pulling at his long coat, hair shifting in the salty breeze. Beside him, Kaya adjusted the sail ropes, her sunhat barely keeping her hair from whipping into her face.
"Alabasta," she said, brushing a strand away. "That's our next stop."
Rael didn't look at her. "What's there?"
"A kingdom in the desert," Kaya replied. "One of the largest in this part of the world. I remember reading about it. The land has been in political turmoil for years, but it's vital. Trade routes, royal bloodlines, ancient history."
Rael gave a soft grunt of interest.
Kaya continued, her eyes scanning the map. "More importantly, if what I've heard is true, the Marines and World Government have been increasingly active around it. Something's happening there."
"And you think it involves us?"
"If they're still watching us after Loguetown… probably. Besides, it might be the only place where we can learn more about the world's deeper secrets."
Rael nodded slowly, his golden eyes distant. "Then that's where we'll go."
Days passed quietly at sea.
Despite the tension that lingered after Cipher Pol's ambush, Rael and Kaya settled into a rhythm. He trained during sunrise, his hands wrapped in fresh bandages from the damage Helix had inflicted. Kaya spent her mornings reading, sometimes aloud, sharing facts and stories she'd uncovered about ancient civilizations, the Void Century, and whispers of Pluton—a weapon said to be buried in the desert sands of Alabasta.
"You think that's why the World Government's involved?" Rael asked one evening, as they sat beneath the stars.
Kaya nodded, hugging her knees. "If even half the rumors are true, they'd want to keep something like that hidden or under control."
Rael glanced at her. "And if it's real, someone else might be trying to find it."
The idea lingered between them like fog.
Two days later, the golden coastline of Alabasta emerged in the distance, its towering cliffs rising above shimmering blue waters. The ship cut through the harbor of Nanohana, a thriving port city, its white-washed buildings contrasting sharply with the sprawling desert just beyond.
As they disembarked, a sudden wave of heat hit them like a wall. Sand clung to everything, and merchants called out from canvas-covered stalls, offering water, fruit, and desert robes.
Kaya adjusted the scarf around her neck. "Let's get supplies and figure out where we're going."
Rael took in the city with a trained eye. He could already sense it—unease beneath the surface. Men in cloaks watching from rooftops, wanted posters fluttering in the hot breeze, and soldiers in uniform marching in small patrols.
Whispers followed them through the streets.
"That's him, isn't it?"
"He's the one who beat the Vice Admiral."
"They say Cipher Pol failed to kill him."
Rael kept walking.
They stopped at a modest inn near the market. As Kaya handled the payment and arranged a room, Rael stepped onto the balcony above and watched the streets. He saw agents in desert garb—too coordinated, too focused to be mere traders.
Something was stirring in Alabasta.
That night, over a simple meal of roasted meat and flatbread, Kaya laid out a crinkled map of the kingdom. She circled a point in the eastern desert.
"There. Rainbase. It used to be Crocodile's stronghold—one of the Warlords. Now it's under heavy Marine presence. Supposedly they uncovered something in the ruins nearby."
"Something like a weapon?" Rael asked.
"Or a clue. Maybe even a map."
Rael studied the map. "We'll head there first thing in the morning."
Kaya hesitated. "Are you sure you want to walk right into where the Marines are thickest?"
Rael looked up. "We're not hiding."
She nodded. "Then we'd better find desert robes. And camels. I am not walking across the sands in these shoes."
He smirked. "Spoiled princess."
Kaya tossed a piece of bread at him. "You love it."
Far away, in a fortified outpost buried near the ruins of Rainbase, a Cipher Pol officer finished reviewing the latest intelligence.
"He's arrived in Alabasta," the officer said to a Den Den Mushi.
The snail mimicked the voice of a superior: "Maintain distance. Do not engage. Let him approach the site."
"Understood."
The officer turned toward a large, sealed vault door behind him. It was ancient. Marked with strange symbols and warnings in long-dead languages. A weapon hidden beneath centuries of sand.
Project Pluton.
As Rael and Kaya rested that night under the stars, the desert winds howled like distant voices.
He looked at her, the firelight reflecting off her face.
"Are you afraid of what we might find?"
"Yes," Kaya answered honestly. "But not more than I want to understand it. And not more than I want to keep you alive."
He nodded slowly.
Tomorrow, the sands would test them.
