The rise of the King cobra

Chapter 20: Learning under pressure is the best teaching method

POV ALABAST

Currently it is now five in the afternoon, and I was standing in a large space in Westbrook, luckily, it was in the Eastern part, where the rich love to express their wealth.

However, we were far away from those homes. It wasn't long until I heard the sound of heavy breathing, looking behind me, I could see David sweating heavily.

"H-hey…w-why did you choose a place far away from home?" He panted while slumping over.

"Becaus, I want to see what I can work with." I replied while turning to face him. I then tossed him something, the object landing in front of him.

On the ground, was a rubber knife. He looked at me with confusion at first, but then realized on what we were going to do.

"Show me what you can do." I told him, flipping the knife in my hand, as David grabbed it, he held the hilt in a horrible manner.

His legs were far apart, his center of gravity was off with him leaning too forward, and his grip was just terrible. I could only shake my head in dissapointment at what I saw.

"Come at me." I got into a combat stance, gripping the rubber knife in reverse. The two of us stood still, gauging each other to see who would start.

As soon as I blinked, David made a mad dash towards me, thrusting the knife towards my chest.

"Too predictable." I made my entire body turn to the side, letting him pass by me. Not before sweeping his legs, causing him to fall.

He tried to scramble back up, but I soon got over him, placing one knee on his back, and the rubber knife on the back of his head.

"You are dead." I then stood, letting him dust himself off.

"Again." I got into the same stance as before waiting for David to make the first move. David also got into his stance, albeit slightly different.

Unlike last time, his legs were closer together, making it easier for him to be balanced. His center of gravity was less off, since he wasn't leaning too forward.

The only thing that didn't change was how he gripped his knife, yet, I didn't say anything just yet.

This time, I was the first to attacked, but instead of lunging towards him, I swung my arm, wanting to have the rubber knife slide across his neck.

He leaned back from the attack and tried to counter me by stabbing from below. I was slightly impressed at his reaction time, but it was still slow.

I spun the knife around, and brought my hand down, knocking it against his knife. The clash between the two rubber knives didn't last long, since his grip wasn't strong enough.

Now that he lost his weapon, he was distracted, giving me the opening to tackle him to the ground. I pressed the tip of the rubber knife against his forehead, making little contact.

"Your dead, again." He growled at the second failure, shoving me off and grabbing the knife again.

As we stood in front of each other, I saw that he became sloppy, his stance was all over the place.

His legs were too wide, his balance was horrible, but the grip on the knife was better. Before I had the chance to finish observing, he charged at me, swinging his arm all over the place.

He was acting like a desperate man, wanting to fight for his life. I only focused on dodging and parrying his attacks, letting him tire himself out.

As soon as he began to slow down, I took the chance to attack, I was about to slip behind him and hold him, but what he did was something I didn't expect.

He released his knife from his hand and tried to hit me with his fist. Only for me to barely dodge, I could feel the air that was disturbed brush me, and countered.

I successfully slipped behind him, and placed the rubber knife against his throat. Causing the both of us to freeze in place, but I smiled and patted his back.

"You died, again." Hearing me say this for a third time, he just groaned and began to kick the ground.

"For fucks sake, stop saying that and teach me, your just kicking my ass!" He said while kicking, I only sighed and stared at him.

"David, the reason why I didn't say anything, was to see how long you would stay calm." I explained and grabbed his hand, pulling him up onto his feet.

"So what? That doesn't help me with anything." He whined, rubbing his back with his hand.

"It actually does, this makes it easy for me to spot any flaws." Hearing that he has some flaws caused him to stand up.

"What flaws do I have, oh smart one?!" He said while placing his face just a few inches away.

"You have a short fuse, you don't think, and run in head first without a plan." Each flaw I stated caused him to flinch, but he didn't answer, he only ran towards me to attack.

"Like I said." I dodged one swing, and pushed him away.

"Short fuse." He lunged towards me, this time I ducked, having him launch from my back, causing him to land on his.

"You don't think." I raised

My foot to stomp on his face, but he rolled to the side.

"And you rush in without a plan!" David scream at my final comment, tossing the rubber knife to the side, pulling his arm back for a punch.

I only raised my arm, blocking one punch, then swung my leg to the side, kicking him on the ribs, but not enough to crack them.

He knelt down and hugged his side, coughing and groaning in pain. I stood there, watching over him with no emotion.

"When fighting, never let your fear, anger, or envy take control, you need to force those out, and have a calm mind." I explained while sitting on his back.

"We have all the time in the world, and I won't make things easy for you." I then stood up, letting him stand.

"Now, shall we start todays first lesson?" I asked him, he tried to push my off, but with my entire weight on him, it was impossible.

"Good, we'll be going over the basics on keeping a clear mind." I stood up, letting him get up.

He only huffed and began to dust himself off, removing the dirt that clung to his clothes. His demeanor changed after being humiliated, but said nothing.

"Think fast!" I shouted and swung a fist, he yelled out in shock, but was able to dodge it at the last second.

"W-what the fuck are you doing?!" He shouted while he dodged a kick from above, I began to go a bit faster, punching and kicking.

"Teaching you to stay calm." I said normally, spinning around to do a roundhouse kick. Only to miss once again, David tried to punch me, but I gripped his fist and jumped up.

Swinging my legs to his face, hitting him square in the jaw. As soon as he fell, I didn't stop and tried to stomp on it.

"How is this teaching?!" He shouted while crossing his arms to block a palm strike.

"I believe learning under pressure is the best teaching method!" I shouted back and tried to strike him on his stomach.

He soon rolled to the side, causing me to slam the ground. As he rolled away, he grabbed the rubber knife and got up.

Fixing his entire stance, not entirely, he held his ground better. Instead of charging forward, he was being pushed back.

I expected him to lash out like last time, but he was playing safe, moving backwards and moving his body to the point I was close to hitting him.

What made it disturbing for me, was how fast he was improving, the longer I held back, the more I could see him making adjustments faster, sharper.

I didn't know what was happening, but I decided to raise the difficulty, making my attacks connect to his body.

It didn't take long for him to fall, since all it took was a judo throw for him to land on the ground.

"You are learning, guess the way I teach is good." Hearing me say that, David only grinned and pulled himself back up.

"Yeah, guess learning under pressure is the best teaching method." Was all he said before charging at me.

I had to admit, this was something I thought I'd never do, I expected to be alone in this city and die alone.

'I guess making connections is nice.' I thought, while the two of us spent the entire afternoon training and exchanging blows.

(A/N) Hey, hey. Sorry for not updating in a while, I had a major headache, preventing me from working.

I might need a small break from this for now, so don't expect updates for a while. I'll be back as soon as I can.
