Chapter 90: Chapter 88 – A Story Without an Afterward
"Nia, how old are you this year?" Harry asked curiously.
The little girl put away her handkerchief and replied softly, "Nia is ten years old!"
Harry was genuinely surprised. He hadn't expected Nia to be ten already—she looked more like seven or eight.
Of course, that wasn't the most misleading thing about her.
What truly gave the wrong impression was that Nia didn't seem to have the mindset of a ten-year-old at all.
Just think about Hermione Granger and Cho Chang—they were only eleven or twelve, yet they were clearly more mature in comparison.
When Nia talked to Harry, she was pure and innocent, completely unguarded.
It seemed her parents had sheltered her so much that she had very little interaction with the outside world—like a blank canvas.
Still, Harry figured the real reason Hermione and Cho were more mature than their peers was because they had grown up in the Muggle world.
Muggle education, after all, was far superior to that of the wizarding world.
Before attending a magical school, most wizarding children were homeschooled by private tutors. They might have excelled in certain magical subjects, but in many areas—especially interpersonal skills—they were far behind Muggle kids.
At the very least, they were terrible at social interaction.
Just look at the people in the original Harry Potter books:
Draco Malfoy—arrogant and self-important.
His two cronies—completely useless.
Ron Weasley—timid.
Neville Longbottom—nervous and cowardly.
James Potter—arrogant and disrespectful.
Luna Lovegood—eccentric and isolated.
…
As they say, "Comparison is the thief of joy."
"So that means you're about to start Hogwarts this year," Harry realized quickly after learning Nia was ten.
"Yeah, but I'll just be a first-year when I enroll this summer. You'll already be in your second year," Nia said, looking a bit down.
"That's okay," Harry said with a smile. "Once you're at Hogwarts, you'll see—even if we're in different years, it's easy to meet up."
Hearing Harry's reassurance, Nia cheered up again.
After all, she had just gained a big brother—she didn't want to lose him so soon.
…
After talking for quite a while, Nia looked at Harry with growing dependence in her eyes.
Harry hadn't expected this either. He'd only come to Malfoy Manor, and yet somehow ended up gaining an adorable little sister.
Although he wanted to spend more time with the little girl, he had to return to Hogwarts.
So, he said regretfully, "Nia, I have to go now."
"Where are you going?" she asked, confused.
"I'm heading back to Hogwarts."
"Aren't you living here?" Her first impression had made her assume this was Harry's home.
"Of course not. I was just here visiting a classmate. Now it's time for me to go back."
Nia hadn't expected that. She had hoped her mother would bring her back to this castle again so she could see Harry.
"Haha, once you're at Hogwarts, we'll be able to see each other every day."
Nia said nothing, looking like someone who had just lost her favorite toy—downcast and gloomy.
…
…
As he walked through the long corridor, the portraits lining the walls pointed at him, whispering among themselves.
Harry silently flipped them the bird in his mind.
Whew…
He pushed open the door, and snowflakes swirled in the air before his eyes.
Another blizzard had begun.
Harry stepped down the stairs and turned back to Nia behind him. "You should head inside."
Nia was reluctant to leave.
"Brother, let's meet again in six months."
"Alright."
Suddenly, Nia ran up and gave Harry a quick kiss on the cheek.
Then, as if all her courage had been spent, she turned and ran back inside, slamming the door behind her.
Harry didn't know whether to laugh or cry. He didn't overthink it. He figured Nia had done that because she was afraid he'd forget her.
Just like how Muggle kids seal a pinky promise.
Such a pure and innocent child.
…
As he walked through the blizzard, a question gnawed at Harry: Why do I like Nia so much? Isn't she the third girl I've liked already?
…
…
Nia had never looked forward to going to magic school this much before.
When her mother had first told her she'd leave home at age eleven to attend Hogwarts on her own, she had felt nothing but resistance.
But now, she could hardly wait.
"Who are you?" a haughty voice called out from behind her.
Nia instinctively disliked it—it didn't sound anywhere near as nice as her brother's voice.
Still, her good manners prompted her to greet the platinum-haired boy politely.
The boy said, "I'm Draco Malfoy."
Before arriving, Nia's mother had told her that if she met a boy named Draco, she should call him "cousin."
If she hadn't met Harry, perhaps Nia would have done just that.
But now—Hmph! No way I'm calling him cousin. I already have someone better.
"Have you seen Harry Potter?" Malfoy's pale face flushed slightly.
"I have." So this was her brother's classmate—but he couldn't hold a candle to her brother.
"Where is he?" Malfoy had mustered all his courage to come here. He didn't want to be looked down on.
"He left," Nia replied coolly. She could sense that Malfoy didn't like her brother, so her tone was distant.
"Left?" Malfoy hadn't expected that. He had imagined countless scenarios of bantering with Harry—but now, they were all pointless…
"Are you alright?" Seeing Malfoy looking distraught, kind-hearted Nia couldn't help but ask.
"I'm fine," Malfoy replied irritably, then turned and headed back to his room.
If Harry ever found out that his presence had ruined Nia and Malfoy's first meeting… how would he feel?
Perhaps—mostly delighted.
After all, maybe the Astoria who didn't end up with Malfoy was the one who truly found happiness…
