Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Four Fruits
North Blue - Unnamed Islet.
The night was as dark as ink, the moonlight cold. The faint sound of waves lapping against the rocks whispered in the darkness. Roy's figure slowly materialized on the shore, the metal case he had taken from Bellamy held casually in his hand. He sat down on a flat rock, placed the case beside him, and with a flick of his finger, the lock clicked open.
The lid slowly lifted, revealing four Devil Fruits of different shapes and sizes resting on a soft velvet lining. The moonlight fell upon them, and their surfaces glowed with a strange, mysterious luster.
"Heh..." Roy let out a soft chuckle, his eyes filled with a mixture of amusement and disdain. "Sending a fool like Bellamy to deliver something so important?" He prodded the fruits with his finger, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Was he hoping someone would steal it on the way, giving him an excuse to default on the payment and then send someone to steal it back? So... cunning, as always."
He shook his head, a dismissive smile on his face, before his gaze focused on the most dazzling fruit of the four. Roy gently picked it up. In the moonlight, this Devil Fruit looked like a solidified flame: an orange-red, dragon fruit-shaped fruit covered in distinct spiral flame patterns. Its stem extended outwards like a cyan-blue flame. The entire fruit radiated an undeniable sense of heat.
"The Flame-Flame Fruit..." Roy raised an eyebrow, a nostalgic smile on his lips, a complex emotion in his eyes. "It really is fated to be with Ace."
His mind couldn't help but recall the ridiculous comments from his past life's forums and comment sections: "The Flame-Flame Fruit? Not even a dog would eat that!" "Who in the New World can't use fire? The Flame-Flame Fruit is outdated!" "This is the era of Haki, what's the point of a Logia anymore?"
Those contemptuous and mocking words seemed to blow like a cold wind through his memory, filled with prejudice and shortsightedness. But Roy just smiled faintly, his gaze as calm as water, a hint of pity in his eyes. "Such foolish prejudice..."
His fingertips gently caressed the fruit, the patterns like dancing flames. He mused to himself in a low voice, "Ace's failure was never the fault of the fruit itself." He remembered the scenes of vast, rolling flames, so dazzling, yet they had crumbled before true power.
Roy sighed, his eyes as deep as the night sky. "Are Logias weak? The Three Admirals are all Logia users... Akainu's magma, Kizaru's light, Aokiji's ice. Which one of them doesn't strike fear into the hearts of men?" He tapped the fruit's surface, a sharp glint in his eye. "The fruit is never the problem. The user is the one who is weak."
He recalled scenes from his past life: Ace repeatedly using large-scale flame attacks but never truly grasping the 'essence' of fire. In an era that emphasized Haki, Ace had stubbornly focused on increasing the scale of his flames, ignoring the most crucial element: the ultimate control of 'temperature.'
"Temperature..." Roy squinted, a playful smile slowly forming on his lips. "What if the development of the Flame-Flame Fruit wasn't just about the 'scale of the flames,' but about pursuing the mastery of extreme temperatures or compressed explosions?" He slowly clenched his fist, as if feeling the fruit's boundless potential pulsing at his fingertips. "The Flame-Flame Fruit, in my opinion, is no worse than the Magma-Magma Fruit. The ultimate expression of flame is to turn everything to ash!"
"When the temperature breaks ten thousand degrees, burning at the molecular, even atomic level—that is what is truly worthy of the title of the 'sun'!"
The wind whispered, the waves lapped against the rocks, like the low murmur of a fire, echoing in the night. After a moment of contemplation, Roy sighed and carefully placed the Flame-Flame Fruit back in the case. His gaze then shifted to another unique fruit inside.
This one was a brilliant and luxurious gold color, with a special gourd-like shape and covered in ornate spiral patterns. It shimmered in the moonlight as if cast from pure gold.
A look of faint surprise appeared on Roy's face. "The Gold-Gold Fruit?" His voice held a hint of amusement. He recalled some fragmented information and chuckled to himself. "This is an unexpected bonus... If I remember correctly, Doflamingo was originally planning to use this fruit at an auction next year to attract the attention of some big shots, but that guy Tesoro and his crew ambushed the delivery." He paused, his smile widening. "Tesoro, huh... maybe I'll have to deal with that guy later on."
Roy placed the Gold-Gold Fruit back in the case, looking pleased. "This trip was definitely worth it."
His gaze swept over the remaining two strangely shaped Devil Fruits. "Strange... I have no memory of these two at all."
He frowned and picked one up—a long, brownish-yellow fruit with spiral patterns, a short, curled stem, and looked like an over-twisted sausage. "This shape... it looks like a sausage casing that's lost its air."
He then picked up the other—a dark green, spherical fruit with a turtle-shell pattern and a short, thick stem. It felt hard to the touch. "This looks like... a cheap hybrid of a Dog-Dog Fruit and a Turtle-Turtle Fruit."
Roy fell into thought. In his past life, he had been one of the most devoted One Piece fans, having practically memorized the Devil Fruit encyclopedia, but the shapes of these two fruits didn't match any known type. "Are they unrecorded, rare Zoans? Or experiments?"
Just as he was debating whether to take the fruits back to Marine Headquarters first—Ding!—a crisp system notification sound rang in his mind.

"Upper-level operational error??" Roy was silent for two seconds, a vein slowly popping on his forehead, his lip twitching. "Don't tell me that stupid goddess got drunk again..."
—God's Domain—
In a dimly lit office, a blue-haired, blue-eyed, clumsy goddess was sprawled out on a sofa, holding a half-empty bottle of beer, her cheeks flushed, thoroughly drunk. She mumbled incoherently, "Hic... one more... this goddess can still drink..." She let out a hiccup, rolled over, and her bare foot kicked the control console with a thwack.

The goddess, completely unaware, mumbled, "Ugh... the system, whatever... just let me sleep..."
Roy took a deep breath, pinched the bridge of his nose, and forced down the urge to curse. "Well... something is better than nothing."
He looked at the two fruits again, and a clear encyclopedia entry appeared in his mind:
[Zoan Type · Dog-Dog Fruit, Model: Dachshund]
Ability: Grants the keen sense of smell of a canine (can track scents up to 3 km away). The body can freely extend up to 2 meters long (but has low ground clearance and is easily tripped). No significant increase in combat power.
Evaluation: Suitable for a police dog, not a warrior.
Roy: "..."
He then looked at the other one:
[Zoan Type · Turtle-Turtle Fruit, Model: Red-Eared Slider]
Ability: Grants a defensive turtle shell (hardness ≈ an ordinary iron plate). Grants the ability to breathe underwater (but swimming speed is reduced by 70%). Can survive for three months without food.
Evaluation: Suitable for a punching bag, not a fighter.
Roy: "..."
He silently closed the case and looked up at the sky. The night wind carried the salty taste of the sea, and the waves lapping at the shore seemed to be laughing at the uselessness of these two fruits. Silence was the theme of the night.
