The Pendant of Mars

Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Fracture of Loyalty

Max Carter stood at the village's edge, the crimson Martian sky streaked with the faint glow of dawn. The portal shimmered in the distance, its blue-gold swirl wider now, a constant hum vibrating through the red soil. The pendant pulsed against his chest, its heat a restless itch, syncing with the tension in the air. Beside him, Lyra gripped her staff, her emerald eyes scanning the trees, while Zorin leaned on his mended staff, amber gaze fixed on the portal. Colonel Hughes paced nearby, his grizzled face taut, barking orders to Jenkins and the squad as they fortified a perimeter with crates and rifles.

"Carter," Hughes called, his voice rough. "Command's sending a unit—ETA any minute. Engineers, scientists, brass. They want this portal locked down."

Max's jaw tightened, a knot forming in his gut. "Locked down? Sir, that's poking the bear. The Engine's already twitchy."

Hughes shot him a look, stern but weary. "Orders, son. We don't get to pick 'em. You're still my man here—keep it steady."

Max nodded, but unease gnawed at him. "Yes, sir."

The portal flared brighter, a crack splitting the air, and figures poured through—two dozen soldiers in crisp uniforms, followed by civilians in jumpsuits lugging gear: metal crates, scanners, a hulking generator. A broad-shouldered man in a pressed suit stepped forward, his gray hair clipped short, eyes cold and calculating. "Colonel Hughes," he said, voice clipped. "Major General Vance, Army Intelligence. This site's under my command now."

Hughes stiffened, saluting. "Sir. Situation's volatile—Carter's got the rundown."

Vance's gaze slid to Max, lingering on the pendant. "You're the deserter who lit this fuse."

Max bristled, stepping forward. "Not a deserter, sir. Got yanked here—been keeping it from blowing up."

Vance's lip curled. "We'll see. Secure the perimeter—nothing moves without my say."

The unit spread out, engineers swarming the portal with tools, soldiers forming a tight ring. Max caught Jenkins' eye—the private flashed a nervous grin, but something in his posture felt off, too stiff. Lyra nudged Max, whispering, "They're too many. The wardens—"

"Will hate it," Max finished, voice low. "Stay sharp."

A tremor shook the ground, faint but growing. The pendant flared, searing his skin, and shadows flickered at the forest's edge. "Here we go," Max muttered, grabbing a crystal-tipped spear.

The attack came fast—six wardens, their cores blazing red, tendrils slashing, voices grinding: "Earth defiles the bridge!" They charged, ignoring the villagers and zeroing on the portal.

Action erupted. Max leapt into the fray, spear cracking a warden's arm, his super strength driving it back. Lyra's staff blazed, light piercing another's core, while Zorin flanked a third, his staff splintering its leg. Hughes' squad fired, bullets chipping shadows, and Vance barked, "Hold the line!"

Max ducked a tendril, hurling a boulder that staggered his target. "Cores, Jenkins—hit the cores!" The private nodded, firing, but his shot went wide—too wide. Max frowned, then saw it: Jenkins pivoted, aiming at the generator, and fired. Sparks flew, the machine whirring erratically, and the portal pulsed wildly.

"Jenkins, what the hell?!" Max roared, tackling a warden as shadows thickened.

The private smirked, cold and unfamiliar. "Orders, Carter. Vance wants chaos—brings the big guns."

Betrayal hit like a punch. Max spun, spearing his warden's core, and charged Jenkins, slamming him into a crate. "Whose orders?"

Jenkins laughed, blood trickling from his lip. "Higher than Vance. Earth needs this—Mars is leverage."

Lyra's light felled another warden, and Zorin took down the last, but the portal's surge drew more shadows—ten now, swarming the unit. Vance cursed, rallying his men, while Hughes grabbed Jenkins, pinning him. "Talk, damn it!"

"Too late," Jenkins rasped, as the generator sparked, the portal widening.

Max sprinted for the chasm, Lyra and Zorin at his heels. "Engine's feeding this!" he shouted, crashing through vines, his strength clearing a path. Wardens pursued, their roars shaking the trees, but he pushed on, the pendant's glow a beacon.

In the cavern, the Shadow Engine thrummed, its core alive with dark veins, shadows pulsing outward. A massive warden materialized—jagged, crimson-cored, towering over them. "Earth's greed summons us," it growled, tendrils lashing.

Max gripped his spear. "Round four." He struck its chest, staggering it, while Lyra's light pierced its arm. Zorin flanked, cracking its leg, but it swung, knocking him back. Max caught him, shoving him clear, and pressed the pendant to the core.

Visions flooded—Earth's cities, tanks rolling through portals, Mars aflame, then a whisper: "Balance or ruin." He gritted his teeth, pushing, and the Engine groaned, shadows recoiling. The warden roared, lunging, but Lyra's blast and Zorin's strike felled it, its form dissolving as the core dimmed.

Max sank back, panting, Lyra at his side. "Getting old," he muttered.

Zorin smirked, wiping blood. "You're still mad, Max."

They returned to chaos—wardens gone, but the unit fractured. Hughes had Jenkins cuffed, Vance glaring. "Carter," Hughes said, "he's singing—Command's got plans. Mars as a colony, Engine as a weapon."

Max's fists clenched. "Over my dead body."

Vance stepped forward, cold. "You're out of line, soldier."

"Been out since I got here," Max shot back, pendant glowing. "This stops now."

Night fell, the portal dim but active, Earth's presence a scar. By the stream, Max sat with Lyra, Zorin sharpening his staff nearby. "Earth's not backing off," Max said, voice low. "Jenkins was just the start."

Lyra leaned against him, her hand on his. "You'll fight them. Like you fight everything."

He smirked, softer, lacing their fingers. "Got a reason to." Her warmth steadied him, a quiet vow.

Zorin glanced over, amber eyes steady. "Your people—they'll bleed us dry. Like before."

Max nodded. "Not if I can help it."

The pendant pulsed, a bridge alive—Earth's ambition clashing with Mars' soul. Max squared his shoulders, Lyra's faith and Zorin's alliance his strength. The horizon flickered, a storm of steel and shadow looming.
