Chapter 4: Mama Owl
Olivier slowly awoke to find himself back at the Owl House, and laying upon the couch.
He had a wet rag over his forehead..And, his mother was sitting beside him on a chair.
"m-mama?"
Eda looked to Olivier..and, hugged him. "you're awake! thank the titans." spoke Eda.
"wa-what happened, Mama?" asked Olivier.
Eda frowned. "you..c-cast your first spell." said Eda, almost in disbelief.
"but, it was a big one. Too much for you to handle. you passed out, so I brought you home."
Olivier scoot in the couch. "I..I think I remember. You, and Aunt Lily fighting."
Eda frowned at Olivier again referring to her sister in that way.
"I..I wasn't even trying to cast a spell." spoke Olivier. "I just wanted you two to stop fighting."
Eda fell silent, her mind racing. Everything about this didn't make sense to her.
She may love Olivier like her own son. But, he was still only human..Literally.
..and, Humans SHOULDN'T be able to use Magic. They didn't posses the 'Bio-Sac'
that all witches were born with that made magic possible for them.
And, yet..Olivier not only DID cast a spell (Despite being human) but it nearly killed him.
Eda began to wonder: was Olivier cursed like she was? Was THAT the reason for his odd eye color
(and the fact that they 'glowed', sometimes.) In any case, it was dangerous for Olivier to use his magic.
Even a simple light spell might kill him right now.
"How are you feeling?" asked Eda.
"tired.." answered Olivier, weary. "I ache all over..I can barely move my arms and legs."
"here..drink this, it might help you." said Eda..who brought a bottle of golden liquid.
"what is it?" asked Olivier.
"An Elixir. it will heal you." spoke Eda. "but, just drink a little bit."
Olivier opened his mouth as Eda pour a portion of Elixir down Olivier's throat.
As he swallowed, the glow in his gold and cyan eyes dimmed a little.
"feel better?" asked Eda.
"ye-yeah..a little." said Olivier.
Eda frowned at this. If her Elixir worked on Olivier..then, he really WAS cursed like she was.
but, then WHO cursed her son? Even when he was a baby, his eyes glowed unnaturally..
..almost as if some *something* lay dormant within his tiny, frail body. Awaiting to be unleashed.
"mama.." spoke Olivier, again.
"yes, sweetie?"
"what did Aunt Lily mean when she said you were cursed?" asked Olivier.
Eda's face grew pale. She REALLY didn't want to talk about this.
..but, she felt she had no choice now.
"(damn you, lilith..) well..when I was a young girl. Someone broke into my room and cursed me." began Eda.
"I don't know who it was, or why. but..unless I drink these Elixirs, I transform into a savage monster.
It's the main reason why am in exile. I have no place in civilized society..not anymore."
Olivier stared at his mother. Finding it almost hard to believe that she could ever be a monster..
..but, then he realized something else. "am..I cursed, too?"
Eda looked down. "I don't know..Maybe."
"But, I'm your SON. If you are cursed, then doesn't that mean I am, too!?" continued Olivier.
Eda looked at Olivier with sad eyes..Was she REALLY going to tell him this?
"Olivier..do you really want to know why your ears are round, and not pointed like mine?"
Olivier stared, puzzled at where this conversation was going. "uhhhmm.."
"It is because..you aren't really a witch. You are HUMAN."
Olivier widened his eyes. "human..So, I'm from that other world you keep visiting?"
"yes..But, somehow another human found a way to THIS realm." continued Eda.
"that human..she was killed by-(pauses) she was killed because humans are hated here.
by the time I found her, there was nothing I could do...Except raise, and protect the baby that she hid away."
Olivier became pale at this. "wait..so, you mean that-That you aren't REALLY my mother?!"
Eda looked down. "no..your real mother died long ago. I'm sorry."
Olivier began to tear up. "so, I'm not really your son.." sobbed Olivier.
"NO, honey, No.." Eda caressed Olivier's head. "you ARE my son..in every way that matters.
I may have not brought you into this world. but, I have loved you all the same."
Eda then embraced Olivier, holding him close. Olivier snuggled into Eda's embrace.
it didn't feel fake, or pretend. no..it felt REAL. his Adoptive mother..really did love him.
"if I am human..then, why am I able to use magic?" asked Olivier.
Eda frowned. "I wish I had an answer for you..Maybe you are cursed, like me.
I've never seen a witch cast any spell that left their bodies feeling weak, and drained of life."
Olivier paused as he pondered this. "then..I guess I really am your son."
a tear fell down Eda's cheek as she held Olivier tighter. "always."
After awhile, Eda finally released Olivier and began to yawn loudly.
"well, I'm feeling like a sleepy owl. and, you should probably get some rest, too."
Despite it only being sundown, Olivier had to agree that he felt tired. "okay..night, mom."
Eda took some time to fluff Olivier's pillow, and tuck him in.
she then planted a soft kiss on his head. "good night..my little Sun and Moon."
Eda stood up, and took a moment to look at her child as drifted off to sleep.
he looked so small..like a baby bird that needed her protection.
Eda sighed as she turned and made her way to her own room.
through the entirety of her walk, her mind dwelled upon her sister, Lilith.
Lilith now knew about Olivier..which was the last thing she wanted.
and, while she didn't know he was human, she still didn't like that she even knew of him AT ALL.
Eda wasn't sure what would be worse: Her own sister killing her son..
..or, stealing him away to brainwash into being just another mindless servant of the Emperor.
Once she reached her room, Eda tried to banish these thoughts as she climbed into her giant bird nest.
As she laid upon the branches and bones, she closed her eyes and tried to relax herself.
Lilith will NOT take Olivier..she won't let her.
Eventually, drifted off to sleep..but, her body twitched as she started to dream.
..and, it wasn't a pleasant dream.
In her dream..Eda found herself standing before the bridge leading to the Emperor's Castle.
She saw her sister, Lilith, standing before the castle gates at the other side of the bridge.
Lilith then snapped her fingers..and, a blue bubble containing Olivier appeared.
"MAMA!" called Olivier, scared.
Lilith began the same old 'Join the Coven/The Emperor Will Heal You' monologue.
Eda ignored her, and proceeded to do battle with her sister.
With Lilith using Olivier as a living shield to maintain the advantage.
Then, the dream turned DARK.
Olivier was knocked over the bridge, and Eda rushed to intercept.
Eda focused all her magic on levitating the bubble, keeping Olivier afloat.
..then, Lilith conjured a hand construct that pushed the bubble further down.
Eda increased the strength of her magic, not giving a damn if she drained all she had.
and, then it happened..
*POP!*
Eda gasped in horror as the bubble popped..and, Olivier plummeted to his doom.
as the dark abyss swallowed him up, Eda screamed in anguish..a scream that morphed into an inhuman screech.
(("SKREEEEEEEEEE!"))
In another part of the Owl House..Olivier's eyes shot open.
he shot up in a sitting position. Alarmed at the shrill sound he just heard.
"M-Mom?..King?" Olivier quickly got off the couch, and looked around.
by now, it was nightfall. the the interior of the house was almost pitch black.
However, this wasn't a problem, as Olivier could see perfectly in the darkness.
(in fact, his gold and cyan eyes seem to illuminate in the dark like a pair of night lights.)
"he-hello?..is anyone there?" spoke Olivier, his voice shaky.
((*CRUNCH!*))
Olivier quickly turned around..and, gasped as seeing the door where Hooty resided torn completely off.
and, looming near the doorway. Claws still dug deep within the wood of the door.
was the silhouette of a huge creature that looked like a cross between a lion, and an bird.
Upon closer inspection..Olivier saw that it had a human-like face.
..one that he instantly recognized.
"M-MOM!?"
'Eda' looked straight at Olivier with solid black eyes...and, then let out a terrible screech.
((*SKREEEEEEEEEEEE!*))
"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!"
Olivier quickly turned, and ran. He ran as fast as his legs could take him.
He somehow ran even faster once he heard the Owl Beast that was once his mother chase after him.
but, then the unthinkable happened: Olivier tripped.
The boy yelled out as his body dropped to the ground with a THUD.
He tried to get up, but a taloned paw then came down and pinned his boy against the floor.
Olivier stared in shock and horror at the monstrous visage of his mother's face.
It roared at him with long jagged teeth dripping with thick saliva.
Olivier couldn't even scream..he just turned his head away, and awaited his end.
..but, nothing happened.
Olivier slowly opened his eyes..and, saw the Owl Beast was just staring down at him.
As the massive head lowered, the young boy flinched. dreading a bite that would surely end him.
The Owl Beast inhaled deeply. Apparently smelling it's prey. It snorted as it processed Olivier's scent.
then..it began to lick Olivier face with it's long tongue.
Olivier looked up, confused. The Owl Beast then lifted it's paw, freeing Olivier.
The Owl Beast proceeded to nuzzle Olivier, making soft purring sounds.
"uhhh.." Olivier was at a loss. just moment ago, he was running for his life.
NOW, this..Creature was acting less of a monster, and more like a big kitty cat.
As Olivier tried to get up..the Owl Beast snapped it's jaws on something. "YIPE!"
Before Olivier knew it, he was suddenly lifted off the ground and held high into the air.
The Owl Beast had Olivier hood in it's teeth, and proceeded to carry him off somewhere.
"WHOA!, H-HEY!" exclaimed Olivier, his body dangling in the air.
The Owl Beast ran so fast, Olivier couldn't even keep track of where he was going.
By the time his body finally stopped moving, her felt dizzy.
Shaking his head, he noted he was now in his mother's room.
The Owl Beast then approached the giant bird nest (which was just her size, now.)
and, gently dropped Olivier into the nest before getting in herself.
Olivier looked up as the Owl Beast lay down beside him. she then used her front paw to bring the boy closer to her.
Olivier soon found himself covered in the soft, downy feathers of the Owl Beast's chest.
As she lay down to apparently sleep, Olivier quickly pieced together what was happening.
This creature..really was his mother. and, seemed to view him as 'her chick'.
As Olivier tried to move around, the massive humanoid head of creature
came down near him as the beast had curled up into a circle around the small boy.
..in a strange way, Olivier kinda felt 'protected' in this circle.
Realizing escape was not only impossible, but pointless, Olivier tried to make himself comfortable and resume sleeping.
As he relaxed himself..he found the Owl Beast's feathers DID feel very soft (like a puffy blanket.)
his eyelids grew heavy..until he finally drifted back to sleep. The Owl Beast awoke for just a moment to check on her 'owlet'
The beast nuzzled him with her massive face, making soft sounds like purring.
((*KA-KLAAASHH!*))
As lightning suddenly flashed, followed by a crash of thunder.
The Owl Beast became alert, and spread out it's massive wings on it's back like a shield.
Though it's feral mind couldn't comprehend what a thunderstorm was,
It recognized danger..and, currently had the maternal instinct to 'protect it's chick'.
Once it became apparent that no danger was coming, the Owl Beast relaxed itself.
nuzzling it's 'owlet' one last time, it curled back up and eventually fell asleep.
