Chapter 25: The Rift Between Us
As Olivier Clawthorne walked down the hall of his grandparents mansion,
he was being followed by Amity Blight (who kept her distance so not to alert him.)
Amity had no idea WHY she was even doing this.
It was clear to everyone (especially herself) that Olivier was still VERY angry with her.
And, yet...Here she was, still trying to spark a conversation with her childhood friend who hated her.
(Amity was either very stubborn, or had some kind of death wish...Perhaps even BOTH.)
Eventually, Amity saw Olivier exit outside and sprinted over to the open door.
Amity saw that beyond the door was another Courtyard that looked more like a Garden.
With the curiosity of a Cat, Amity stepped out and walked down a cobblestone path.
The Garden was very well maintained, and almost resembled a Nature Park.
With beautiful tress, exotic flowers and some birds fluttering about.
Amity smiled, momentarily forgetting the earlier drama and let herself feel content.
It didn't last for long though, as Amity soon found a shimmering dome at the center of the garden.
And upon approaching it, the dome cast a distorted reflection almost like a mirror.
With curiosity once again overruling an common sense, Amity reach out and touched the strange dome.
She gasped as her hand passed though it, and she felt something cool and wet against her hand.
Pulling her hand out and seeing that it was fine, Amity inhaled deep...and walked into the dome.
After a moment of feeling surreal sensations, Amity finally opened her eyes
once the weather suddenly shifted from it's usual warm and humid, to cool and breezy.
Amity gasped again, finding herself in a completely different location.
Rather than a Forested Garden in Midday, she was now in an overcast marshland
with giant mushrooms that glowed with an variety of colors, and a gentle rain that didn't burn her skin.
Amity figured that this was some kind of illusion that Olivier had created
(and was intended to most likely be this 'Amphibia' place that he and the Anne Human spoke of.)
But...she had never experienced an Illusion THIS convincing before.
The air felt cool, with a realistic breeze against her face.
There was a gentle shower of rain that felt very soothing.
(...NOTHING like the Acidic Boiling Rain that she was used to.)
If this really was what the real Amphibia was like...then she was kinda jealous
that Olivier got to spend over Three Months in such a beautiful, calming place.
As Amity wandered...she soon found Olivier, who preforming poses near a pond.
His eyes were closed as he planted his feet, and moved his arms and hands fluidly.
Amity stared...and then widened her eyes as a stream of water emerged from the pond,
and began to move like a serpent near Olivier, mimicking the motion of his hands.
Amity noted how it almost reminded her of how some Abomination Practitioners used their magic.
Some moves that Olivier made, she recognized...though she had never seen this done with Water.
Amity stayed silent as she watched Olivier puppet the water stream almost like a dance.
She then smiled, finding Olivier's movements impressive
(and making a mental note to try them out herself in her free time.)
Olivier then stomped his foot, making a stone structure spear out from the ground.
He then flung the water stream at the pillar, freezing it on contact.
Olivier then opened his eyes, and ignited both his hands with fire.
He then flung each fireball at the frozen pillar.
The first shot heavily fractured it...while the last shot destroyed it.
Olivier then inhaled, and shot out a powerful gust of wind from his palm
that not only snuffed out the remaining flames, but blew away the rocky debris.
"wow..." spoke Amity, astonished at what she just saw.
Just then, Amity yanked up into the air, hanging upside-down by a Wild Vine.
She gasped...and then stared in silence as she saw Olivier begin to approach her.
"one day...I just wanted ONE. DAY. to relax." began Olivier, his voice ice cold.
"and not only are *YOU* here at my grandparents house, BUT you are also spying on me too."
"I wasn't spying!, I was just-"
"-watching me from the shadows like a sneaky stalker..." said Olivier, cutting Amity off.
"Pretty sure that is the very definition of "spying."
Amity frowned, unable to think of a retort to that. "I didn't come here to start trouble-"
"Then WHY are you still here?!" snapped Olivier (cutting off Amity.)
"Shouldn't you be bullying Nature and Bard Trackers with Boscha, and her Brat Pack!?"
"I don't socialize with HER anymore." said Amity, sternly.
"Well, Whoop-De-Doo: Amity Blight DUMPED Another Friend." spoke Olivier, in a snarky tone.
"So, how many does this make now?: Three?!, Two More and you get a Free Sundae."
Amity exhaled sharply. "I just...I just want to talk, Olivier."
Olivier scowled at this (as if Amity's choice of words actual angered him.)
But as quickly as it came, his scowl turned into a smile...which only succeeded in creeping out Amity.
"funny...I remember a time when all I wanted to do was "Talk." began Olivier.
"...and rather than listen, you threw me off a CLIFF with your damned, slimy Abominations."
Amity shivered as a once repressed memory flashed back in her mind.
That image...of Olivier pleading to her with tearful eyes
while in the crushing grip of a massive Abomination hand that she conjured.
...followed by his scream as she tossed him over a cliff (as Olivier stated.)
Suddenly, the wild vine that had her restrained raised up (now holding her right side-up)
The Vine brought Amity closer to Olivier, allowing her to see the cold expression on his face.
(...Ironically, it was similar to the look that she herself gave him so long ago.)
"oh-ollie, please...I-I'm-"
But before Amity could finish, Olivier raised up two fingers together,
puppeting the Wild Vine to raise Amity up high again.
"Whoa-WHOOOAAA!"
Amity yelled out as she was flung into the air, and plummeted into the pond with a loud SPLASH.
Olivier then snapped his fingers, dismissing the illusion that faded back into the Clawthorne Garden...
...where the 'Pond' where Amity was drenched in was revealed to be a reflecting pool
being fed by a large fountain shaped like a Griffin with water spouting from the open beak.
As Amity grimaced in the pool, Olivier approached her and stared down at her.
"consider yourself lucky. that was MORE than you deserve." growled Olivier.
"and DON'T call me "Ollie" again!...only Willow, Anne and Luz get to use that name."
Amity exhaled as she rose up out of the water.
"Okay...FINE. I guess I had that coming." said Amity, as she got out of the pool.
As Amity started to shiver, Olivier rolled his eyes and exhaled deeply.
The Boy then waved his hand, and extracted all the water from Amity's clothes.
Amity then watched as Olivier used the floating orb of water on some nearby flowers.
"Thanks." said Amity.
"For WHAT?, these flowers look too dry." spoke Olivier, his back turned to Amity.
Amity exhaled sharply. "Olivier, I really am sorry for...Everything."
Olivier said nothing in response...So, Amity continued speaking.
"I won't make any excuses for...what I did to you back then.
you...t-tried to tell me something important, and I wouldn't listen.
But I've come to realize just how wrong I was. I should've listened to you...I'm sorry."
After a long moment, Olivier finally turned and faced Amity.
His eyes softened a little...but then became cold again.
"nice. For a moment, I almost believed you." began Olivier.
"But I've had my trust broken by one too many people recently, and I'm not about to add you to that list for a second time.
ESPECIALLY since I know for a fact that the 'Word of a Blight' has proven to be worthless.
From your B'witch of a mother making empty promises, to the trickery of your your bratty siblings.
EVERY Blight that I had the misfortune of meeting have proven to be nothing but liars and tricksters."
Olivier then frowned, showing sadness in place of anger for the first time.
"I thought you were different once. I thought you were...'The Good One.'
But you were instead the WORST of them. Even worst than...HER.
Mom was right about you...I wished I'd listened to her warnings."
Amity frowned as she stared at Olivier.
Almost as if seeing the extent of the harm that her actions had done.
Looking down, she spoke softly.
"I'm...sorry. I never meant to-, no...I guess that isn't really true.
I did hurt you. and I didn't even care...I didn't care about ANYONE...but myself.
But I really have changed. I'm not that person anymore."
Olivier silently looked at Amity, his facial expression unreadable.
"The only "change" that I see is your hair color." began Olivier.
"And, I will admit...your natural brown hair DOES kinda remind me of 'better' times.
But I still see remnants of that vile GREEN color that your mother likes so much."
Amity touched the ends of her hair that was indeed still dyed apple green.
"Even if you are telling the truth (which I *STILL* don't believe.)
What guarantee do I have that you won't go back to your "old ways?" continued Olivier.
"You were ALREADY a good person...and then you became a horrible one.
Now, you say that you are "good again", so what if you end up going back to being "Bad" all over again!?"
Amity paused. Olivier's words (though intended to hurt) had some truth to them.
what if...What If she DID fall back to her old ways?
She didn't want to...But she didn't want to 'back then', either.
Yet she gave in so easily to her mother, and eventually just lost herself into that role.
"Look, I don't know what game you're playing, Blight." continued Olivier.
"But just know that I'm watching you. (*approached Amity*) and if you do ANYTHING to hurt
that Luz Noceda girl like you did me, Even Hettie Cutburn herself won't be able to fix what *I* do to you."
Amity was stunned by Olivier's threat. "I would NEVER-"
"The same goes for Anne Boonchuy." continued Olivier, his eyes burning like hot coals.
"that girl...is the best thing that ever happened to me. She is my whole REALM.
and so help me Titan...if You, Boscha, or even Emperor Belos himself ever do ANYTHING to hurt her!..."
Olivier stopped himself, feeling his power starting to rise beyond his control
(and indeed, Amity was stepping back at seeing the boy's Auburn Hair start to turn Coal Black once again.)
But then...Olivier grasped his chest as he felt a sharp pain shoot through him.
He gasped as hos legs gave out...and he dropped down to his hands and knees.
"OLIVIER!?" exclaimed Amity, alarmed.
"c-crap...not th-this...again." groaned Olivier, his arms shaking.
Amity lowered down, and attempted to transfer some of her magic to Olivier...
...Only for Olivier to swat her hands away.
"DON'T...touch...Meeee..." groaned Olivier. "NEVER...t-touch me...with *YOUR* Magic."
Amity looked at Olivier in shock. "But I was just trying to-"
"I d-don't...n-need your help." continued Olivier, still struggling to breathe.
"I...d-didn't need you...for THREEEE...YEEEAARS. And I...STILL DON'T!"
Amity frowned, remembering how while Olivier had been missing for three-in-a-half months,
It actually had been Three Whole Years since she and Olivier last spoke to each other.
Three Years since...That Night when *everything* changed.
((*SCREEE!*))
Just then, a Falcon flew down to the pair and hovered over Olivier.
The Falcon then turned to wood, and speared the ground with a firm staff.
Olivier rose up as best he could, and grasped the staff.
He exhaled as he felt Fleetwing's magic flow into him, replenishing him.
Amity stood back, and watched with a grimace as Olivier struggled to support himself.
As Olivier continued to groan, Amity returned her attention on him.
She tried to approach, but Olivier made a 'Shoo-ing' gesture at her.
"As angry as I am with you...I do have to give you credit where it's due." spoke Olivier.
"when you betrayed my trust, you ended up teaching me an important lesson.
one that I have carried with me ever since then...
You taught me...'Self-Reliance.' That I cannot always depend on others for help.
And when you wind up all alone, the only person who you can really count on...is yourself."
Amity frowned at this.
"that is..." continued Olivier, his tone shifting. "...until I met Annie."
"I tried to keep my distance from her, but she was just...SO PERSISTANT.
Somehow she found her way into my heart. And now...I have grown depend on her."
Amity cracked a smile due to Olivier's words oddly paralleled how she felt about Luz.
"yeah...she is a very special girl." said Amity, softly.
Olivier finally turned and faced Amity again. "Then we are clear on what will happen if you ever hurt her."
Amity didn't flinch as she stared back at Olivier.
"I swear on my LIFE...I would never do anything to hurt Anne, OR Luz."
"You'd better not." said Olivier, in a warning tone.
"I won't!, You have my oath that I won't-" repeated Amity.
"So did me and Willow...and we all know how that turned out." continued Olivier.
"And don't even start to give me that excuse over how "Your Mother MADE you do it."
I already know how manipulative that B'witch is. I've had enough sleepovers at your mansion to know that."
"Then why are you being so hard on me over this?!" asked Amity, almost pleading for an answer.
"BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T FIGHT FOR US, AMITY!" shouted Olivier finally, tears in his eyes.
Silence swept over the area as Amity stared at Olivier, stunned at his sudden emotional outburst.
"I knew...you were afraid of her." continued Olivier, his voice breaking a little.
"But I thought...I thought you loved us more than you feared HER.
and when we needed you the most, you would've always stood up for us...like you used to do.
But you just...GAVE IN. You surrendered to her, to...to...
You threw us both away without a second thought!, You didn't even TRY to stand up to them.
It was like...like...like we didn't matter anymore. That we weren't worth fighting for."
Amity's heart broke as she watched tears flow down Olivier's cheek.
This wasn't him being angry at her anymore...no, he was genuinely hurting.
...and, the worst thing was there was nothing she could do to comfort him.
"the Amity Blight that I knew...that I trained with, wouldn't had done that." continued Olivier.
"The Amity Blight who I called 'My Friend' was a fighter, with a heart as golden as her eyes.
SHE would've stood up for us, Defended us. Because that was just who she was: 'Never Give in, NEVER Surrender.'
THAT Amity wasn't just my friend...she was my Idol. Someone that I aspired to be one day, despite my...disabilities."
Amity widened her eyes at this, Completely shocked at Olivier's words.
He REALLY thought so highly of her back then!? It both made her feel Proud...and Ashamed.
Olivier then shifted gears, and glared at Amity coldly again.
"But you aren't her...Blight. not anymore. WE...are NOT...my friends."
Olivier's words stung...but Amity didn't show it.
She just looked back at her once friend with a stern expression.
"I see that words alone won't be enough to convince you."
Amity breathed out deeply. "alright...if I have to prove myself to you, then I will.
I don't know how, but I will earn back your trust...and become worthy of the friendship that we once had."
Olivier stared at Amity for a moment...and then wordlessly turned and walked away.
Amity remained still, watching with sad eyes as Olivier hobbled away with his staff.
Once he was gone from view, Amity looked over at the reflecting pool and gazed at her reflection.
"I'm NOT that person anymore..." spoke Amity, as she touched the green highlights of her brown hair.
"but...I guess I can never go back to the person that I used to be, either."
Amity paused...but then glared with renewed determination. "but that doesn't mean I can't be Better."
Amity then reached into her pocket, and pulled out her Penstagram Phone.
She then began to send a text message to someone in her contacts.
[Emira. U Free? I could use a Makeover.]
Amity waited...and then got a response.
[Abso-FREAKIN-lutly, Mittens! You want the usual Hair Dye that mom likes?]
Amity tapped rapidly.
[NO. I want something different.]
[Do you have anything...Abomination colored?]
Amity waited...and then got a response.
[End of Part 25]
