Chapter 75: Gifts
What should she do? Everything on the menu looked delicious. After looking at it for a while, Feng Wu still couldn’t decide.
Wolf looked at the pain on Feng Wu’s face. Guessing she was having a hard time deciding what to eat he said, “Can’t decide? Then don’t.” To the waitress he said, “Bring your best cakes and a pot of herbal tea.”
“One moment.” With a huge smile on her face the waitress left to get their order.
A few minutes later a tray of cakes and a pot of tea was brought over. There were so many delicious plates, their order nearly didn’t fit on the table.
Wolf realized he may have ordered too much. Just looking at all the sweets made his tooth ache. He had to pay extra attention to his diet in order to maintain his physique, so he didn’t plan on eating any of it. The cakes were all for Feng Wu. But looking at that waifish body in front of him he doubted she’d be able to eat more than a slice or two of cake.
He considered calling the waitress over and canceling some of the order when he saw Feng Wu’s eyes. They were shining like bright orbs. Ah forget it! I’m a dashing wolf! I can’t let a girl down! I’ll just have the leftovers boxed!
“Don’t rush. Just eat what you can. We’ll have the leftovers boxed…” His words trailed off as he watched Feng Wu eat. He was shocked. She was really fast. In the space of that one sentence she had gobbled down, not one, but two slices of cake! They were each the size of a fist! He stared as she attacked a third.
What was he about to say just now?
Feng Wu demolished the cakes in less than fifteen minutes. The plates were clean as a whistle without a single crumb or frosting in sight.
Wolf cautiously asked, “Are you… full? Do you want more?”
“No. I have to eat dinner when I get back. I can’t eat too much now.”
Wolf thought: Girl, are you for real?! You just had a dozen cakes! You’re going to eat dinner after this?!
In all earnestness he said, “Xiao Wu, when you get married, make sure you marry a rich man. An ordinary man won’t be able to afford you.“ Please see the sincerity in my eyes. I am serious. This is for your own good.
“Huh? Jier said so too.” Feng Wu nodded her head. Jier had told her the same thing before.
Ha! So he wasn’t the only one. Wolf nodded his head, agreeing with Jier.
“Here. Look. I’ve got something for you.” Wolf pulled up a luxurious bag full of clothes.
Feng Wu looked inside and found it was full of the clothes she tried on at the store. This surprised her so she asked, somewhat doubtfully, “For me?”
“I saw you trying them on at the store. They looked really good on you but for some reason you didn’t buy them, so I bought them for you. As a friend. Take it. You can’t say no.” Wolf looked at her with his big blinking eyes after he finished talking.
Feng Wu looked down at the clothes, then back at the blinky-eyed puppy-like Wolf. Jier said not to accept things from strangers, but Wolf had invited her to eat cake, and they had chatted. Didn’t that make them friends? Could friends accept gifts from each other? Feng Wu wasn’t sure, but the expectant look on Wolf’s face suggested it was OK…
“I don’t have any gifts for you.” Feng Wu said sadly.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll wait for you to find something suitable,” Wolf generously offered.
Feng Wu looked at him and with complete sincerity said, “Wolf, you’re a good person.” He had bought her delicious cakes and even given her gifts.
Wait. Did you really consider rejecting a guy as nice as me? Wolf wondered shaking his head. He thought Feng Wu was really peculiar.
“Come on, I’ll walk you back.”
“You’ll walk me back?” Feng looked adorable holding the bag of clothes in one hand.
“Yes, that way I can see your friend Jier. We know each other you know.” He patted her head lightly, quite enjoying the soft fluffy texture.
“You know Jier?” Feng Wu’s big eyes show surprised. Was Wolf Jier’s friend too?
“You’ll know if we go and see him.” So saying Wolf took a hold of Feng Wu’s arm and led her forward after paying for the sweets at the cashier.
Feng Wu stopped moving after a few steps. Wolf couldn’t budge her.
“Xiao Wu. I’m not lying. I am a friend of Jier’s.” Wolf assumed Feng Wu was reconsidering and thinking the worst of him, so he tried to get her to trust him again.
“No. You’re going in the wrong direction. This way.” Feng Wu pulled her arm out of his grasp and looked in the opposite direction.
“Oh, well let’s go then.”
The recent events had led to an increase in traffic at Pierre’s inn, so business was booming. It was dinnertime and the first floor dining area was full of patrons drinking and eating. Matron La’s BBQ was delicious and popular with everyone.
Pierre and Jier were enjoying a drink of ginger ale with their meal while Little White was upstairs with Little Bun.
The door opened in on this bustling scene. The incredibly beautiful Wolf stepped in.
Matron La immediately greeted him with a robust, “Welcome!” while in her heart she was thinking how dangerous it was for such a beauty to walk around outside. Poor thing, he thought. People must want to molest him left and right.
Behind him was a very familiar purple clad female.
Matron La recognized Feng Wu right away.
“Xiao Wu. How is it that you came back with Wolf?” Jier asked as soon as he saw her. He knew the necromancer sent by the mayor would have suggested notifying the Sacred Temple, and that the Sacred Temple would send someone from the Star Marshall Hall over, but he never expected it to be Wolf.
Wolf was one of the hall’s 28th generation Stars. He was a fearsome opponent with outstanding sword skills despite being a magician. He wasn’t low on the totem pole either. In fact his position was quite important. [notes]
It was just that he was too vain! It would take him two hours just to get ready in the morning. Even after he finished, he needed to check his appearance every hour.
