Chapter 68: The Party
The party was a birthday celebration for the mayor’s daughter, Angel. The mayor’s house was lit with bright, festive lights for the occasion. The traffic was bustling as well.
Suitable smiles appeared on everyone’s faces as they stepped out of their carriages. They were beautifully dressed and pleased to be attending the festivities.
The musicians were playing as people arrived but no one was dancing yet, as people were still filing in.
Many people attended in hopes of ingratiating themselves to the mayor. Aside from the rich lords and nobles of the town, there were also out of town merchants and adventurers. Every single one of them either had money, connections, or status. No one was ordinary.
Pierre was on the list because he was a native of Rime-Frost and his family had done business in the town for generations.
Feng Wu entered the ballroom looking stylishly adorable in a pink dress and a simple accessory in her hair. Jier was a beautiful teen with a natural aristocracratic air of authority so he attracted attention the moment he stepped inside.
Compared to the two, Pierre was quite plain. His family didn’t have much cache, any they had kept dropping every year, so no one greeted him when he entered. He went straight to the wall and proceeded to be a wallflower.
Feng Wu zoomed in on the buffet table. She picked up a big plate and piled it high to nearly overflowing with food. Then she walked carefully to the nook Jier ensconced himself in and proceeded to eat everything on her plate.
Seeing this Pierre followed suit. He did a quick walk around, stopping at the buffet table to fill a plate, before hiding with Jier and Feng Wu in the corner.
“The two people over there are Mr. Wenda and Ms. Dusha.” Pierre pointed out.
Jier and Feng Wu looked to where Pierre was pointing. The man looked refined with a scholarly air to him. The woman on his arm was a gentle beauty. They appeared mild mannered, not at all like people capable of plotting murder.
Jier discretely observed them for a moment. He didn’t see anything strange. They seemed like two ordinary people.
“I don’t like that person,” Feng Wu suddenly said.
“Who? Ms. Dusha? Yes, she is indeed a bad woman.” Pierre said.
Feng Wu shook her head. “No, the man.”
“The man? You mean Mr. Wenda? It’s true, he has changed. He used to be a good man before he met Ms. Dusha. Now he’s terrible.” Pierre thought about the change in Mr. Wenda’s personality and how he had turned into a scoundrel after falling for a pretty woman’s charms.
“The demon! The demon is here!” Lydia’s fear-filled voice frantically sounded by Feng Wu’s ear. Feng Wu dutifully repeated her words.
Jier’s heart constricted. He knew Feng Wu had to be speaking for Lydia. Both he and Pierre asked, “Who?”
Lydia shouted louder, pointing in the couple’s direction, but the only one who could hear her was Feng Wu.
Pierre knew Feng Wu was working on another mission. Was it possible both crimes were committed by the same person?
“It’s Mr. Wenda,” Feng Wu confirmed.
Jier’s mouth twitched in surprised. If anyone, he thought it would be Ms. Dusha. Interesting. Interesting.
“Mr. Wenda is the one who killed all the girls?” Pierre wanted to scream, but because of their situation he had to hold it in.
Lydia flew to Wenda and stared daggers at him, screaming her lungs out. Her glares were useless as he couldn’t see her.
“If the murderer is Mr. Wenda, then Ms. Dusha has to be the mastermind behind it!” Pierre was certain of this.
“What you say is possible,” Jier said. He had investigated Mr. Wenda and talked to the servants in the house. They all said he was a kind and courteous man, one who never took his temper out on others. “A person’s personality wouldn’t change so dramatically without someone else pushing.”
Feng Wu remained munching away at the side. She was far more interested in her food than in their conversation.
“The mayor is here!”
“His wife and Miss Angel are here as well!”
Those chatting stopped, while those eating put down their plates. Everyone stood up to greet the mayor.
The mayor walked in with his family. Behind them were two teenagers: a boy and a girl. The boy was like the embodiment of winter with blonde hair and veiled ice-blue eyes that left one wondering what he thought.
The girl opposite him shared the same distinguishing characteristics; it was obvious the two were related. She Unlike him however, she had a beautiful smile on her face. The dress she wore accentuated her body and made her even more lovely looking.
“Everyone, welcome to my daughter’s birthday celebration. Please allow her to start of the dancing.” Thunderous applause sounded after he spoke.
Angel held her hand to the blond-haired boy. He hesitated very briefly before taking her hand and leading her to the dance floor where they gracefully danced to the music.
“Fuck! Why’s that guy here?” Jier had an awkward expression on his face as he looked at the blond from across the room. Although to be fair, I guess it’s not that unexpected. This is his turf, thought Jier.
