Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Tap, tap, tap... The rhythmic echo of footsteps reverberated through the darkened corridor. Abruptly, the space illuminated, revealing a woman striding purposefully towards the end of the hall. Short, platinum blonde hair framed her face, styled in a chic, modern cut. Her large, vivid blue eyes held an air of urgency. Clad in a pristine white formal dress with a flowing skirt and fitted bodice, she exuded an aura of both elegance and impatience.
A heavy door stood before her. She approached it, the rhythmic clicking of her heels echoing in the quiet hallway. Suddenly, a voice cut through the stillness.
"Junior researched Lorraine detected..."
But the woman's voice cut through the automated message. "System bypass," she commanded, her tone authoritative. "Founder credential: Project Ashvin."
The corridor was plunged into darkness as the lights flickered and died. "Please provide corresponding password," the automated voice demanded.
"Surya," Lorraine replied without hesitation.
"Password correct. Welcome, Lorraine Sync," the automated voice declared as the heavy doors parted. The interior was shrouded in twilight, illuminated by a soft pink glow emanating from twin light sources. Within these ethereal orbs, tiny figures lay motionless, their eyes closed.
A voice echoed through the room, "Lorraine!"
She raised her wrist, revealing a bracelet that pulsed with a steady white light. "Yes, Dad, I'm at the lab," she replied into the embedded communicator.
"Check their vitals, Lorraine," her father instructed, his voice tinged with urgency.
Lorraine sighed and moved towards a wall-mounted console. Placing her hand on a spherical interface, she activated the device. Multiple screens illuminated, displaying vital data on the subjects.
"Everything seems normal, Father," she reported. "Vitals are stable."
A sigh echoed through the line. "Make absolutely certain there are no anomalies," her father insisted. "Remember, these subjects are of utmost importance, involved in a dangerous project."
Lorraine was acutely aware of the stakes involved. Their work was coveted, and any disruption could have dire consequences. Yet, despite her meticulous examination, the lab appeared pristine. No anomalies, no signs of tampering. And yet, the alarm had sounded, a stark reminder that someone had breached their sanctuary.
Outside, a full-scale operation was underway. The lab was surrounded by a heavily armed force, their presence a stark contrast to the sterile calm within.
"Dad, I've checked everything multiple times," Lorraine reported, her voice laced with frustration. "Nothing seems amiss. Could it have been a false alarm?"
"Alright, fine," her father conceded, his voice tinged with resignation. "Just make sure everything is secured before you leave. We'll likely be transferring the subjects soon."
Lorraine stepped out of the lab into a dazzling display of lights. The facility was perched atop a hill, affording her a panoramic view of the sprawling city below. She took a deep breath, the crisp night air helping to clear her mind of the recent ordeal. The stress of the situation was palpable.
Everything appeared normal, yet the alarm was undeniable proof of a breach. Lorraine mentally retraced her steps, her mind a meticulous archive of the lab's layout. A lifelong habit of hyper-vigilance had honed her observational skills, but now they yielded no answers.
"Miss," a voice interrupted her thoughts. A man in full black tactical gear approached, rifle slung over his shoulder. "We've swept the perimeter, nothing out of the ordinary."
"It's fine," Lorraine replied, her voice masking a lingering unease. "I'll be going now. Seems like a false alarm."
The man hesitated, his expression thoughtful. "With all due respect, Miss, I sense something amiss. The lab appears normal, but there's an undercurrent of...wrongness."
Lorraine acknowledged his intuition. While she prided herself on logic and empirical evidence, she couldn't entirely dismiss the inexplicable feeling of unease that had settled over her.
"There's no point dwelling on it," she concluded, her gaze dropping. "Let's just leave it for now."
The captain nodded in agreement, though a sense of unease lingered. Something was amiss, they both knew it, but without concrete evidence, there was little they could do.
As Lorraine departed, Hugh Sync watched her go from his expansive office. Bathed in the soft glow of crystal desk lamps, his weathered face, etched with the lines of countless experiences, was a mask of calm belied by the intensity in his emerald eyes. A once sharp suit hung loosely on his broad frame, the formality softened by time. A cigarette smoldered in his hand, its smoke curling lazily into the still air.
He had witnessed everything. The alarm, Lorraine's examination, the subsequent calm. The people behind the 'subjects' were not ordinary. They were a force to be reckoned with.
A sharp rap echoed through the office, interrupting Hugh's contemplation. A young aide entered, his expression grave. "Sir, you have a call," he reported.
Hugh dismissed him with a wave, "I'm busy. Tell them I'm unavailable."
But the aide persisted, his voice low, "It's... him, sir."
A cold shiver ran down Hugh's spine. "Send him through," he ordered, his voice barely a whisper.
As the aide left, Hugh activated a discreet communication device embedded in his desk. "Hugh, I've heard about the situation at the lab," the voice on the other end stated, its tone devoid of emotion.
"Yes, it seems to be a false alarm," Hugh replied, his voice steady despite the turmoil within. "I'm sending a team to secure the premises."
Even as he spoke, a cold dread settled in his stomach. How had they learned of the incident so quickly?
The call ended abruptly. Whether he approved or not was irrelevant; additional security was a prudent measure. Rising from his chair, Hugh approached a seemingly ordinary wall. As he drew near, the surface transformed, revealing a panoramic view of a bustling metropolis. Towering skyscrapers and a myriad of lights stretched into the distance.
"Two weeks," he mused, his gaze fixed on the city below. "Once they see the results, funding will flood in." A weary sigh escaped his lips. The project had been a relentless grind, but the promised rewards were within reach.
Two weeks later, Lorraine stood outside the lab, its true scale apparent in the morning light. The building was an architectural marvel, a fusion of nature and technology. Vines and roots seemed to intertwine with the structure, lending it an organic aesthetic. The building was segmented into bio-pods, each dedicated to a specific research area, their configuration fluid and adaptable. This intricate design, while impressive, also made the facility a labyrinth without proper authorization. The recent security breach was all the more perplexing given the building's formidable defenses.
The impending arrival of the project sponsors pushed aside her immediate concerns. Stress gnawed at her, and she felt on the brink of unraveling; the comforting thought of her best friend's imminent arrival offered a glimmer of hope.
A sleek, low-profile car approached, its aerodynamic design a testament to advanced engineering. The matte black finish seemed to absorb light, giving it an almost stealthy appearance. Behind it trailed a similarly sleek truck, its exterior devoid of traditional mirrors, relying instead on a network of cameras.
The truck's front was dominated by a bold, illuminated grille that seamlessly integrated with adaptive LED headlights. As the vehicles came to a halt, two figures emerged, clad in identical black suits.
The first was a younger man, his features sharp and angular, exuding an aura of confidence. Dark, almond-shaped eyes held a keen intelligence, while a thick head of wavy hair added a touch of informality to his polished appearance.
Behind him stepped a man of more mature years. His face, though lined with experience, held an air of quiet authority. Blue eyes, sharp and penetrating, seemed to assess everything with clinical precision. A short, neatly trimmed beard framed his strong jawline, complementing the classic elegance of his attire.
Both men were physically imposing, their suits hinting at underlying strength and athleticism.
Lorraine was still processing the encounter when she felt a sudden jolt of energy. A pair of arms wrapped around her, nearly lifting her off her feet. "Oh, Lorraine, you're here!" A voice, bright and cheerful, broke through her reverie.
Celine, with her signature blend of elegance and mischief, had materialized beside her. Her oval face, accentuated by high cheekbones, was framed by a striking contrast of black and white hair styled in a modern bob. Her large, expressive blue eyes held a mischievous glint.
"Let go of me, you know I hate surprises," Lorraine managed to say, a hint of amusement in her voice. "And yes, I'm here. But I'm also terrified of what's about to happen."
