Ch 2 : The Guilty One
Chapter 2 : The Guilty One
A rare phenomenon transforms people into "Envoys." However, this is not the result of chance. The chosen individuals must carry within them a certain level of desire, even a minimum. The current world, mainly ruled by nobles who already have everything, is devoid of desire. But as soon as an individual feels enough desire, they immediately become an Envoy.
The world of Tyralis, where they land, is quite special. They must survive there, as monsters inhabit it, but other Envoys are also present. They can certainly return home whenever they want, but often, they prefer to stay in this world.
An Envoy receives powers after a trial. Each ability is tied to who they truly are. To evolve, they must meet certain conditions. The energy core is what grants them these powers. It is an orb that resides within them, but it can be summoned if necessary. It is also recommended to join one of the kingdoms of this world to ensure a stable life and peaceful progression. But that, the one without a name did not know.
["Nameless," you have been admitted as an Envoy for our special program!]
[Installing energy core... Completed!]
[Sending to Tyralis... Completed!]
He struggles to reopen his eyes after the sudden burst of light. When he finally manages to do so, he realizes he is in a plain, surrounded by several other people. In the distance, forests rise that he knows nothing about. He doesn’t even know where he is.
“Shit, where am I? Am I dead?!” he exclaims, starting to panic. Suddenly, an imposing man clad in armor approaches him and places a hand on his shoulder.
“You’re not dead yet, but it won’t be long if you keep screaming, you idiot,” he says coldly before punching the panicking child in the face.
He falls to the ground, his body even more bloodied than before. He risks dying if this continues, and he still hasn’t accomplished anything. He tries to pull out his knife, but it’s impossible; it’s still embedded in the back of the previous man.
“What the hell is going on?” he murmurs, frustrated.
Suddenly, a message appears again:
[Greetings, Envoys! It is time to start our special power-gaining ceremony!]
[Condition for success: Survive until dawn!]
[Good luck!]
The Nameless one becomes fearful at these messages. He looks around him: several people, all equally panicked, childrens, women, elderly people among those present here.
He has nothing left. He ate his own shoes, wears only rags, and is covered in wounds. To him, it’s clear he’s going to die here.
The armored man from earlier begins to shout so that everyone can hear:
“You idiots, listen up. Welcome to Tyralis. Here, it’s kill or be killed. I’ve been given a pretty simple task: to explain the rules of this place!” he yells before continuing, equally coldly:
“To pass this trial, you can kill someone and directly gain your powers without waiting, or survive waves of monsters that will devour you all—” But before he can finish his sentence, a man in his thirties stabs a knife into the back of an elderly lady who had been listening attentively to the armored man’s speech.
“Ah... Huff... I did what I had to do, I did what I had to do! I read it online!” He starts shouting while repeating his words. Suddenly, another message appears:
[Mikato Likav: Gains his power. He is aligned with the star of the Coward!]
At these words, he breaks into a smile, pleased to have gained his first power. But the Nameless one is not pleased.
“You bastard! You just killed an old lady for powers?!” he screams, unable to comprehend the absurdity of the situation or the world in which he lives.
He thought he was in the right, that his voice would change people’s opinions, but no. After the first murder, everyone starts to pounce on each other, hitting and killing one another. At the sight of this horror, he flees.
“What the hell is going on? This shit… where am I? Powers? Monsters…?” he murmurs as he runs. He heads toward the forest that surrounds the plain; to him, it’s the only place he can hide.
“Let’s analyze the situation. People are killing each other, I have no food, I’m hungry, I’m going to die, I’m still bleeding, I have… no chance of survival,” he says, frustrated, angry, sad. He feels multiple emotions at once.
He then starts crying frantically, unable to grasp what is happening to him. What did he do to deserve this?
Now, he is alone in the forest. To him, life hasn’t changed after all. Suddenly, he hears a growl.
“Shit, a monster now!” he screams, drying his tears. He scans the forest around him for something he can use to defend himself but falls to the ground. He is far too injured to walk.
The growling gets closer, and he panics more and more. He crawls on the ground, trying to get away from the sound.
The monster gets closer and closer until it emerges from a bush. It’s a huge gray wolf, a wolf that no human could fight.
“So I’m finally going to die…” he murmurs as the wolf approaches.
He is lying on the ground. The Nameless one understands that it’s useless to crawl to escape. He will not escape death. Behind him, the wolf opens its mouth wide, and then he has one last crazy idea.
“Wolf… it’s pointless to kill me. I can’t even feed myself enough. Instead, go kill all those over there; I’m already dying. But look, they’re all in good shape and alive…” he murmurs, a false smile on his lips. But against all odds, the wolf closes its mouth and moves away from the young man’s body.
Then it advances again, but by going around him, before charging straight toward the plain. The monster runs at full speed towards the massacre taking place in the center of the area, as if it had heard the Nameless one’s suggestion.
Then, upon reaching the center, everyone stops fighting to look at the imposing figure watching them, saliva dripping down its jaw.
From the forest, the Nameless one observes the scene.
“No! Wait, I was joking! There are children among them; they’re not all guilty! Don’t kill them, wait, Mr. Monster!—” he tries to shout, but the distance between the plain and the forest is far too great.
And before his eyes, the monster begins to devour everything in the center. Even the imposing armored man decides to flee, but he is the only one who manages to escape. In the center, people scream:
“Shit, a monster!” cries one.
“Wait, I have childrens, I have childrens; I didn’t kill anyone!” screams another.
But the beast is merciless; it devours everything without exception. From the forest, the Nameless one continues to shout:
“STOP! STOP YOU FILTHY BASTARD! STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!” But nothing, no one can hear him. He is sprawled on the ground, bleeding out.
Then, after a few minutes, the screams stop. There is only a mountain of corpses and splatters of blood in the center of the plain. The Nameless one has witnessed everything, traumatized for life.
But he is far too injured. A few minutes later, he loses consciousness.
