Chapter 231: The Reveal
The Drive Back
The SUV hummed softly as Adams drove through the quiet streets, the city's glow reflecting off the windshield. Naomi sat in the passenger seat, her head resting against the window, her fingers absentmindedly playing with the hem of her jacket. The lake's peacefulness still lingered in her mind, but so did something else—the way Adams had looked at her back there. It wasn't anything dramatic, but there had been something... different.
She stole a glance at him. He was focused on the road, one hand on the wheel, the other tapping lightly against the gear shift. His expression was unreadable, as always, but there was something about the way he exhaled—a little heavier than usual, like he was thinking about something serious.
The silence between them wasn't awkward. It was the kind of silence that felt natural, like neither of them needed to fill the space with words just to be comfortable.
As they pulled up to Naomi's apartment building, Adams parked the car and turned off the engine.
"Well," Naomi said, stretching a little, "guess this is my stop."
She reached for the door handle, but Adams suddenly spoke.
"Wait."
She paused, turning to him. His gaze was fixed forward, but his fingers drummed lightly against the steering wheel, a rare show of hesitation.
He exhaled sharply, finally looking at her. "I have something to tell you."
Naomi raised an eyebrow. "Okay. I'm all ears."
Adams chuckled, shaking his head. "Brace yourself."
That made her sit up straighter. "That serious, huh?"
Adams leaned back in his seat, running a hand through his hair before turning to her fully. His eyes, sharp and unwavering, locked onto hers.
"I'm not who you think I am."
Naomi frowned, leaning back slightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Adams smirked, clearly noticing the slight shift in her posture. "Relax. I'm not a kidnapper, a human trafficker, a stalker, or any of those things you might be thinking."
Naomi didn't respond right away, just kept watching him carefully. His smirk faded, and for a moment, he looked almost... amused.
"But," he continued, "what I am is... not human."
Silence.
Naomi stared at him, blinking once. Twice.
Then, she let out a dry laugh. "Alright. Good one. What, are you secretly a vampire? A werewolf? An alien?"
Adams just looked at her, his face calm, serious.
Naomi's amusement faded.
"Wait. You're actually serious?"
Adams nodded once.
The air inside the car suddenly felt heavier. Naomi sat back, processing. A million thoughts ran through her mind, but none of them stuck. The only thing she could focus on was the way he said it—so casual, so certain.
She swallowed. "Prove it."
Adams smirked. "Knew you'd say that."
Without another word, he lifted his hand.
At first, nothing happened. Then—whoosh—a faint ripple shimmered through the air around him, like heat waves rising from asphalt. The space around his hand twisted slightly, bending reality itself.
Naomi's breath hitched. "What the—"
Before she could finish, Adams' entire arm flickered—vanishing into thin air.
Her eyes widened. "What the hell?!"
Adams chuckled. "Told you."
He brought his arm back, the distortion fading as if nothing had happened. Naomi's heart pounded in her chest, her fingers gripping her seat.
"What... what was that?"
"Just a small trick," Adams said casually, as if he hadn't just broken the laws of physics.
Naomi stared at him, then shook her head. "No. Nope. That—that doesn't just happen. People don't just... do that!"
Adams rested his arm on the steering wheel, looking at her like he was waiting for her to process everything.
Naomi took a deep breath, rubbing her temples. "So you're telling me you're not human?"
"Correct."

"And what exactly are you, then?"
Adams smirked. "That... is a long story."
Naomi scoffed, shaking her head. "Great. Fantastic. I go on a nice little lake date, eat some snacks, play the Pocky game, and now I find out my date isn't even human. This is normal. Totally normal."
Adams laughed. "At least you're handling it well."
"Oh, shut up," she muttered, still trying to wrap her head around everything. She looked at him again, really looked at him. He didn't seem different, and yet... now that she knew, something about him felt otherworldly.
She crossed her arms. "So? What now? You just drop this insane bomb on me and expect me to go to bed like everything's normal?"
Adams smirked. "No. I expect you to ask more questions."
She huffed. "Damn right I'm gonna ask more questions."
Adams chuckled, shifting in his seat. "Alright, go ahead."
Naomi hesitated, then pointed at him. "How long have you been... whatever you are?"
He shrugged. "Since forever."
Naomi narrowed her eyes. "And by forever, you mean...?"
Adams just smirked, leaving her to piece it together.
She groaned. "Great. You're one of those mysterious types, huh?"
Adams laughed. "Guilty."
Naomi sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Okay, next question—are you dangerous?"
Adams tilted his head, considering her words. "Depends on who you ask."
That wasn't exactly comforting.
Naomi exhaled, looking out the window. The city lights glowed softly in the distance, but here, in the quiet of her apartment lot, it felt like a different world. Like she had stepped into something bigger than herself without realizing it.
She turned back to him. "Why tell me this?"
Adams was quiet for a moment. Then, he leaned forward slightly, his gaze locked onto hers.
"Because you're different."
Naomi blinked. "Huh?"
Adams gave a small, almost unreadable smile. "Most people wouldn't handle this conversation as well as you are. Most people wouldn't even believe me."
Naomi opened her mouth to argue but then realized... he was right.
Somehow, despite the insanity of what she'd just witnessed, she was still here. Still talking to him. Still listening.
And, deep down, a part of her did believe him.
She sighed, shaking her head with a small, tired laugh. "You're insane, you know that?"
Adams smirked. "So I've been told."
Naomi stared at him for another moment before finally leaning back into her seat, exhaling deeply.
"Fine," she muttered. "I'll bite. Tell me everything."
Adams' smirk widened. "Now that's what I was waiting for."
Naomi rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Just start talking before I change my mind."
And just like that, the real story began.
