chapter 26
Tae-seo’s single remark—“So that’s why you’ve been so nice to me.”—nearly made Jin Gyu-min burst into laughter. He barely managed to hold it in, quickly covering his mouth and coughing to mask his reaction. His eyes, however, darted back and forth between Se-heon and Tae-seo, filled with amusement.
Judging by their words and the situation, it seemed like a misunderstanding had formed somewhere along the way. But regardless, Se-heon had been treating Tae-seo better than usual. Jin Gyu-min was tempted to ask for details, but one glance at Se-heon’s expression made him reconsider. Se-heon’s jaw was clenched so tightly that his muscles twitched. Saying the wrong thing now might just get him killed.
"Let’s start the test first."
At Se-heon’s low, steady voice, Tae-seo got up without argument. Regardless of anything else, he was curious himself—was he actually pregnant or not?
As he followed the nurse toward the examination room, he suddenly paused and turned back to Se-heon.
"If you’re busy, you can go ahead and leave."
He said it because he remembered how busy Se-heon had been last time. It was better for him to just go to work rather than have his phone buzzing nonstop again. But Se-heon simply waved a hand dismissively, as if telling him to stop overthinking things.
"Even when you try to be considerate…"
Tae-seo shook his head and left.
The moment the door closed behind him, Jin Gyu-min raised both hands in a defensive stance. He had seen Se-heon’s clenched fists.
"If you throw that punch, you know you’re screwed, right? I won’t go easy on you just because we’re friends."
"You told me to take good care of him."
Se-heon latched onto the words that had led to this whole mess. If Jin Gyu-min hadn’t told him to be nicer, none of this would have happened. The only reason he had acted this way was because Gyu-min had suggested it—saying Tae-seo needed rest, good food, and comfort.
But Jin Gyu-min had his own argument to make.
"Did I say he was pregnant? I told you we needed to check. Do you have any idea how important a doctor’s words are? If I had said something without certainty, it would have only made the patient more anxious."
"Then you should have just told me to bring him in for a test."
"I did. And as a friend, I added some advice."
Se-heon ground his teeth so hard that the muscles in his jaw bulged, making him look even more intimidating. Through gritted teeth, he muttered:
"…You told me to buy him food and make sure he got plenty of rest."
And so, from breakfast to snacks, he had done exactly that. Hell, he had even played classical music for him. What a waste of effort.
Jin Gyu-min raised a hand.
"That’s all standard advice for anyone who might be pregnant. And besides, I never said he needed a full diagnostic test—so this misunderstanding is partly your fault too."
Realizing he needed to stick to his guns, Jin Gyu-min doubled down, shifting into full lecturing mode.
"Look, everything I said was for your own good. While we’re on the subject, do you even know how much I look out for you? I even check up on the chairman’s health, schedule his appointments, and sometimes I wonder if I’m actually part of his bloodline."
"The chairman came here?"
"Yeah, he stopped by once."
Jin Gyu-min replied casually, but Se-heon’s expression turned serious. Something about that wasn’t sitting right with him. He had recently noticed an Alpha scent that had raised his suspicions, and now this…
Jin Gyu-min, meanwhile, continued his so-called "friendly advice," which sounded more like nagging.
"Anyway, everything I said was for Tae-seo’s sake. If he is pregnant, his body and emotions are going to change. He’ll feel more tired, his energy levels will fluctuate, and if he doesn’t know what’s causing it, he’ll just think something’s wrong with him. That’s why he needs to be tested. And if the results confirm it, you better treat him right. That’s what being a father is about."
With Tae-seo’s single comment—“So that’s why you’ve been so nice to me.”—the question of who the father was became painfully obvious.
Now, all that was left was to wait for the results.
"But if he is pregnant… No, never mind."
Jin Gyu-min shut his mouth. There was no need to ask if Se-heon would take responsibility—he would find out soon enough.
****
The Waiting Room
"Please wait here, and when your name is called, you can go in."
"Okay."
The nurse’s kind instructions made Tae-seo nod as he sat down on the waiting area’s long sofa.
At the far end of the seating area, there was only one other couple waiting—clearly here for the same reason. Tae-seo glanced around, then let out a deep sigh, leaning his head against the wall.
Earlier, he had forced himself to act nonchalant in front of Se-heon, but now that he was alone, all the emotions he had been suppressing started to surface.
This can’t be real.
The mere suggestion that he might be pregnant made his heart feel like it had stopped. The shock of everything happening all at once left him feeling breathless.
Tae-seo clenched his fist against his chest, pressing down in an attempt to ease the tightness, but it didn’t help.
How is this even possible?
Up until now, he had chalked up all the strange things happening to him as just a result of his unique manifestation—different from the original story. He had wanted to understand why he couldn’t smell scents, why he might have imprinted. But pregnancy? That had never even crossed his mind.
What happens next?
If he really was pregnant, what was he supposed to do? It had only been one heat-induced night, but the consequences were enormous.
Tae-seo shut his eyes, trying to quiet his thoughts. No matter what he thought about, the only result was a sinking, suffocating dread. But the thoughts wouldn’t stop. His mind kept circling back to the same worries.
He tried to distract himself, but then, suddenly, he remembered Se-heon’s expression back in the examination room.
A small smile tugged at his lips.
He also remembered waking up from his nap to the sound of classical music.
Se-heon hadn’t even known whether he was pregnant or not, yet all of his actions lined up perfectly. It was almost funny.
For a brief moment, Tae-seo entertained the idea—If I really am pregnant, maybe he’ll stand by me and help me through this.
But then he shook his head.
From the start, Se-heon had only ever been trying to help him get through his heat. He had never asked for anything beyond that. Even if there was a baby, it wasn’t something he could expect Se-heon to share the responsibility for.
If I really am pregnant… I should leave.
Tae-seo sighed and ruffled his own hair, trying to dispel the anxious thoughts. He needed to go home, face his parents, deal with the aftermath of that damned party, and—somehow—tell them about this.
"Yoon Tae-seo."
A voice called from inside.
Tae-seo’s body felt heavy, but he pushed himself up. As he stepped into the examination room, he nodded politely toward the doctor sitting across from him.
The test itself didn’t take long. He simply followed the instructions, and before he knew it, they were telling him to sit down again.
He had assumed he would have to wait a few days for the results, maybe even go home first.
But then, the doctor looked at him and spoke.
"You’re pregnant."
At the doctor's calm declaration, Tae-seo clenched his hands together, gripping them tightly.
The very thing he had feared had now become reality.
Seeing the complicated emotions on his face, the doctor spoke cautiously.
"I'll give you an ultrasound photo on your way out. Take your time to process everything and come back when you're ready."
The doctor had clearly decided it was best for Tae-seo to sort out his thoughts first. Without hesitation, Tae-seo stood up. There was no reason to linger in the examination room with a doctor he had only just met.
As he stepped out, he found himself staring at a darker wall, rather than the bright one from before.
Someone was waiting for him.
Kang Se-heon was standing there, looking down at him.
"Are you pregnant?"
Tae-seo hesitated, biting down on his lip. He had no idea how to respond. His mind raced as he thought about Se-heon's possible reactions.
What if he's disappointed? What if he's even more shocked and confused than I am?
He could imagine a million different outcomes, and none of them were good.
What if Se-heon asked whether the child was really his?
Wouldn’t it be better to just lie?
Se-heon had only been treating him kindly because he hadn’t known about the pregnancy. Could Tae-seo really expect him to take responsibility now?
But before he could say anything, Se-heon reached out and ran a hand over his head, gently ruffling his hair.
"How do you feel?"
He didn't ask about the baby, nor did he demand an explanation. Instead, he asked about his feelings first.
It caught Tae-seo off guard.
"My feelings…?" Tae-seo repeated, startled.
He had been so preoccupied with the fact of the pregnancy that he had never actually stopped to think about how he felt about it. The idea of carrying a child as a man was shocking, yes, but beyond that…
He had only focused on how Se-heon would react.
But now that he was being asked about his own emotions, Tae-seo took a moment to process.
And when he did, he realized something—his feelings were surprisingly simple.
His expression relaxed.
"I'm just… a little dazed."
"That's all?"
"Yeah. It was sudden, and it's confusing, but… that's it."
Tae-seo nodded, and Se-heon moved to stand beside him.
"Let's go."
"Huh? Go where?"
"Home. Since there’s nothing else to check, you should rest."
"Oh…"
Tae-seo hesitated. Now that he knew he was pregnant, this would probably be the right time to tell Se-heon he was leaving.
But before he could say anything, Se-heon placed a hand on his back.
"Should we stop to eat on the way? Do you feel like having anything?"
"…Galbi."
The fact that he still had cravings even in this situation surprised him. Absentmindedly, Tae-seo rubbed his stomach.
Se-heon, seeing this, let out a small chuckle.
"Beef or pork?"
"…"
"Let’s just get both."
That was that.
As they walked together, Se-heon suddenly spoke up.
"Can I ask you something?"
He had been quiet ever since hearing the test results, so Tae-seo tensed slightly, unsure of what was coming.
"What is it?"
"Are you eating more because you’re pregnant, or have you always had this kind of appetite?"
"Se-heon, do you realize how pointless your questions are?"
"You did say you wanted both beef and pork. Just wondering."
At Se-heon's teasing, the tension in Tae-seo’s shoulders melted.
He still didn’t know what the future held—but for now, all he could do was take it one step at a time.
…Starting with the Beef ribs.
