Chapter 9: Chapter 9:[First Day Part 2]
As the lesson continued, Iruka paced at the front of the room, explaining the basics of the shinobi system: ranks, missions, and the importance of teamwork.
"This will be your foundation as ninja," Iruka said, his tone firm. "It's important that you all understand how vital your role will be in maintaining peace and protecting Konoha."
Naruto feigned disinterest, his head resting on his hand while he doodled an exaggerated sketch of Iruka on his notebook. A few kids snickered as they noticed, but Iruka's sharp gaze immediately quieted them.
"Uzumaki!" Iruka called out, his voice snapping through the room.
Naruto's head jerked up, his face the picture of innocence. "Yes, Iruka-sensei?"
Iruka crossed his arms, his eyebrow twitching slightly. "Since you seem so engaged, why don't you tell the class what the five great shinobi nations are?"
Naruto scratched the back of his head, pretending to think hard. "Uh… Fire… uh… Water… um, the other ones?"
The class erupted into laughter, and even Iruka sighed, shaking his head. "Pay attention, Naruto," he said sternly before continuing the lesson.
While the class moved on, Sasuke shot a glance at Naruto, a faint smirk playing on his lips. What a fool, he thought, returning to his notes.
---
By midday, Iruka announced a break, and the students quickly filed out of the classroom to stretch their legs. Naruto, in typical fashion, leaped from his desk and sprinted toward the courtyard, shouting, "Lunch time! Don't get between me and my ramen!"
Several kids rolled their eyes, but others laughed, his antics already becoming a part of the class dynamic.
Out in the courtyard, Naruto found a spot under a tree and pulled out a simple bento box he had prepared earlier. He had just begun digging in when a shadow fell over him. Looking up, he saw Kiba standing there, Akamaru perched on his head.
"Hey, Naruto!" Kiba said, plopping down next to him without waiting for an invitation. "That thing you did in class earlier was pretty funny."
Naruto grinned, shoveling rice into his mouth. "Heh, yeah! Gotta keep things interesting, right?"
Kiba chuckled, then looked around the courtyard. "You know, most of these guys are way too serious. Except for that guy." He nodded toward Shikamaru, who was lying under another tree, already dozing off.
Naruto followed his gaze and laughed. "Guess I'm not the only genius in disguise, huh?"
---
Across the courtyard, Hinata sat quietly on a bench, her lunch untouched as she watched Naruto from afar. Her heart fluttered as she remembered his earlier introduction. He's so confident… she thought, her cheeks flushing pink.
"Hey, Hinata, you okay?" a soft voice asked.
She turned to see Shino standing nearby, his expression unreadable as usual.
"Y-Yes, I'm fine," she stammered, quickly looking away.
Shino adjusted his glasses, glancing briefly at Naruto. "He's… different," he said, more to himself than to her.
Hinata nodded, unable to suppress a small smile. Different… but in a good way.
---
Back under the tree, Naruto finished his lunch just as Sasuke walked by, flanked by a small group of admirers.
"Hey, Sasuke!" Naruto called out, standing up and pointing dramatically at the Uchiha. "I'm gonna beat you one day! Just you wait!"
Sasuke paused, turning to look at him with a raised eyebrow. "Hmph. You? Beat me?" He smirked coldly. "Not a chance."
Naruto bristled, but before he could respond, Iruka's voice called out from the building. "Alright, everyone! Break's over! Back to class!"
As the students filed back inside, Naruto couldn't help but glare at Sasuke's retreating form. One day, Teme, he thought, clenching his fist. You'll see what I can really do.
The rest of the day went by with lessons and drills. Naruto, determined to keep a low profile, made sure to downplay his talents. When the class worked on chakra control, he struggled alongside the others, deliberately making small mistakes to avoid drawing attention. He didn't want to risk standing out, not yet.
Iruka walked around the room, checking on everyone's progress. When he reached Naruto, he looked at him for a moment. Naruto made sure to look frustrated as he tried to focus his chakra into the small circle of paper in front of him. It was more difficult than it needed to be, but that was the point. Iruka nodded and moved on, satisfied that Naruto wasn't an immediate concern.
The rest of the class followed suit. Some were better at chakra control than others, and a few struggled, but Naruto blended right in.
When Iruka moved on to explaining basic shinobi principles—like the importance of teamwork and missions—Naruto's focus was on keeping his mask firmly in place. He contributed nothing to the discussion, not wanting to reveal too much of his thoughts or abilities. He was just another Academy student.
The day ended with Iruka's usual dismissal: "Get some rest. Tomorrow, we'll start with something new. Be ready to work hard."
The students shuffled out of the classroom, some talking amongst themselves while others walked quietly to their next destination. Naruto followed along, not making a sound. He didn't want to attract any attention, just another face in the crowd.
As he made his way home, he couldn't help but feel the weight of his decision. Every moment in the Academy was a chance to show what he could do, but he held back. It was frustrating sometimes, but he knew it was necessary. He couldn't afford to reveal too much—at least not yet.
Tomorrow would be the same. He would keep his talent hidden, play the fool, and let everyone think he was just another Academy kid. It was the safest approach, the one that would allow him to learn without attracting unwanted attention.
As he walked past the Hokage Monument, Naruto glanced up at it, his face softening for a moment. One day, he thought. But not yet.
With that thought in mind, he headed home, ready for whatever the next day would bring.
