Chapter 32 - A gift from Ramill! First Order Magic!
Chapter 32. A gift from Ramill! First Order Magic!
When Lynn arrived at the first floor hall he saw two emissaries from the Magician’s Association waiting respectfully.
”Please sit down. Would you like some wine?”
Lynn had very aristocratic manners full of respect and self confidence. He stood with a straight back and a welcoming smile. The two emissaries saw Lynn’s perfect manners and gained a little more respect for him. Both of them lowered their heads and expressed their gratitude.
”Thank you, but before we drink please allow me to convey the message from the association.”
Lynn sat in the main seat next to Lucy, while the two emissaries sat opposite to Lynn and began their report.
”After Lord Lynn’s request for a magic book was passed to the association, the note was passed to Lord Ramill to once again invite you to join the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where you can learn magic for free,” the envoys said with envy.
Very few people could attend the academy, and those who did go were top talents. Even if someone did attend the school learning magic would be expensive, unless the person was an appreciated high ranking magician like Lynn. However, Lynn was not impressed.
”Thank mentor Ramill for me, but I still am not going.”
The two emissaries smiled bitterly. In their eyes this was a precious opportunity, but Lynn remained unmoved.
”Lord Ramill anticipated that you would refuse,” they continued, “and he is willing to sell you a magic book at a very low price along with the association’s procedures. We would charge you a total of six hundred gold coins.”
Lynn thought for a moment before asking a question.
”Can you tell me what magic it is?”
”Of course. The name is Starfire Fury. You will be able to manifest fire from the mana in the air, condense it into a fireball, and launch it at the enemy. It is a magic more powerful than ordinary fireballs, and it also has a further reach.”
Lynn listened and looked at Lucy. They were a little excited. The most common flame magic in the first order was a fireball, and several of the magic books that Lynn had seen all recorded Fireball. The cheapest book went for eight hundred gold coins! Even though Fireball was a basic magic spell, it was still very powerful. If one was hit by a fireball on the battlefield, the injuries sustained would be heavy.
A magician who could master Fireball would be able to serve great nobles and get a payment of hundreds of gold coins a year. If there was a war and odds were favorable, a magician would be able to gain more. The magic that Ramill was giving Lynn was far stronger than Fireball, so why was the price so cheap?
”Would you like to buy it?” one of the emissaries asked.
”I want the book, but I do not have enough money on hand currently. I have to sell some goods to obtain the necessary funds. Could you wait five days?”
The two emissaries were a little hesitant as they needed to return within an allotted time. After all, the magic book was worth hundreds of gold coins. If they waited for five days, there may be trouble. Lynn gave Buno, who was standing to the side, a look. Buno nodded and stepped forward. He took out two money bags that had been prepared which contained fifty silver coins each. It was a rich gift. The two people really did not want to waste time, but Lynn did give them a lot. Eventually, the two nodded.
”Please be a little bit faster as our time is really tight.”
Lynn nodded and asked Buno to arrange for a place for the two men to stay. Lynn then went back to the study with Lucy. She poured two cups of tea and handed Lynn a cup.
”It seems that our gold coins are not enough,” she said.
”Magic potions can sell at 450 gold coins, and if the market is willing, the price may be higher,” Lynn calculated. “There is 1,500 pounds of wine which would sell two silver coins a pound. In total it would be thirty gold coins. Adding in our savings, we will have 520 gold coins.”
There were not many nobles who could arrange 520 gold coins in an instant. Lynn’s accumulation rate of wealth was amazing. But Lucy was still unsure.
”Can the magic mushrooms be sold? It will be too late if we try to sell them in Frost Maple City, and you cannot go to Sla.”
”There is no problem. Magic potions are always in demand, so there is no need to worry about selling them. Give the potions to the entourage and they will bring it to a merchant caravan. The caravan can leave the city and travel to Sla without them knowing the mushrooms came from Fenglin. But by then it will be too late,” Lynn said.
”Then sell my carriage,” Lucy said after some thought.
Lynn frowned. A carriage of a nobleman was a symbol of identity not only for a man, but for a woman too. It brought shame to a noble if they sold it. Also, if the carriage had a special marking it would be recognized by someone. Lynn refused.
”No, it is not a big deal. We will sell a portion of our food store. We might have to struggle a bit, but we will survive.”
Lucy took a step forward and took Lynn’s hand. She smiled at him and reassured his mind.
”Food is for war. We absolutely cannot sell it. Sell my carriage. Let others say what they want. You know the real situation, okay?”
It was too late to ask Theresa for money. If Lynn did not want to jeopardize the war and still buy a magic book, he was afraid he would need to sell Lucy’s belongings.
”I am not going to let anyone say anything to you. Believe me, I will think of something else.” Lynn said as he stood up.
Lucy thought about it and replied to him.
”We do not have much time. If you cannot figure something out, sell my carriage. Okay?”
Lynn did not reply, and left the study to find Buno.
”Can you borrow some gold coins from a merchant you are familiar with? It does not matter if the interest rate is high as long as the money could be borrowed.”
Buno thought for a moment before nodding.
”If you were not a nobleman and a magician, you would not be able to. But now you definitely can! However, the interest rate may be scarily high.”
