The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!

Chapter 286: The Predator in the Library

Sometimes, Primrose felt like bad luck had been chasing her ever since she set foot in this kingdom.

It seemed like so many bad things had happened to her here. It started with her being poisoned to death, then reborn, and after she came back to life, a soldier tried to kill her. Then, she was harassed by a man in the Moonshadow.

And now, just when her life had finally felt peaceful for the past few days, someone suddenly appeared to kill her!

How did he even get inside the library anyway? There was only one door here, and the librarian sat right next to it. There was no way he wouldn't notice someone coming in.

Had the librarian been asleep since the moment she arrived? She wasn't sure. She had been too focused on Edmund and too nervous about meeting Sevrin to pay attention.

She wanted to think about it more, but right now, she had to run before the man in black caught her and cut her throat.

If he had powder that could make someone lose consciousness, why hadn't he just used it on her too? That way, she wouldn't feel a thing when he slit her throat.

No, wait! If he threw that powder at her, she definitely wouldn't be able to escape!

"Your Majesty … don't be afraid."

His voice drifted around the table as he walked slowly, each step echoing through the library. It was like he wanted her to know she was being hunted by a predator.

"What do you want?!" Primrose shouted, crawling beneath the long library table, trying to move closer to the library door. "My husband will kill you the moment you try anything against me!"

The man laughed. "Your husband?" he said. "Oh, he won't know unless he can see you. Besides, there are plenty of rogue werewolves he's dealing with right now. Maybe he won't make it back in time … or better yet, maybe he'll already be dead by the time he gets here."

"What a joke." Primrose laughed right back. "My husband is not that easy to kill."

"He is indeed difficult to kill," the man admitted. "But didn't you just see something special I have?" The King may be so high and mighty, but that only applies when he's conscious. What do you think will happen if he falls asleep in the middle of the fight?"

Primrose instantly forgot how to breathe. She clenched her fists tightly, and the door, which was still so far away from her, seemed to blur before her eyes.

At that moment, she couldn't think about anything except Edmund.

What if this man was telling the truth? What if someone managed to make Edmund lose consciousness in the middle of a fight and then killed him in his sleep?

Primrose turned to look at Sevrin lying on the floor. He was still breathing, but his body looked unnaturally stiff.

The powder must cause unconsciousness and paralyze its victim.

She slowly reached for her ring and closed her eyes, speaking silently in her heart, "I want to see my husband."

She repeated it three times, bracing herself for the dizziness she knew would come with the shift in her vision.

However, something unexpected happened.

Her vision didn't change at all.

When she closed her eyes, the only thing she could see was darkness, and when she opened them again, she was still in the library.

What? Why wasn't it working?

It had worked just fine in the garden before. Why did it suddenly fail now?

No, maybe it wasn't the magic that was the problem. Maybe it was her.

Primrose's mind was so full of negative thoughts about Edmund that perhaps … that was why she couldn't activate the magic.

She needed to calm down because panic usually only led people to their own demise.

Primrose took a few deep breaths, silently counting numbers in her head to clear her mind for a moment.

"I want to see my husband."

She repeated the words again and again, hoping the darkness in her vision would disappear and be replaced by Edmund's face.

"Your Majesty, are you perhaps doing something that has to do with … magic?"

Primrose's eyes snapped open. She was taken aback as the man in dark clothes was crouched down, leaning forward to peek under the table.

He stared at her through his black mask, looking like a hawk that had just spotted a small mouse hiding under a tree.

"It's useless, Your Majesty." Even though his face was covered by the mask, Primrose was certain he was smiling. "I've sealed this room from magic. No magic can enter this place, and no magic can leave."

[Ah, he's right. The King and Queen have a way to communicate with each other from a distance.]

[Good thing he told me about it, so I could take precautions.]

Her stomach tightened.

Who told him that? Who told this stranger that she and Edmund could talk to each other through magic?

As far as Primrose could remember, she had never told anyone around her that Edmund often spied on her using magic, not even Raven or Salem.

As for Edmund … she wasn't so sure. She wasn't with her husband twenty-four hours a day, so she had no idea who he might have spoken to.

But more than that, Primrose realized there was something strange, something that should be her main concern right now.

If he had really sealed this room from magic, why could she still hear his thoughts? Wasn't her mind-reading ability related to magic? Or … maybe maybe it wasn't?

When Primrose first discovered that she could read other people's minds, she didn't even think it was magic, since as far as she knew, her magic energy had always been very weak.

But Leofric once told her that her mind-control ability—maybe even her mind-reading—came from her bloodline, or perhaps it was a blessing from heaven.

If it truly was a blessing from heaven, then it could still be considered a form of magic.

Well, she hadn't checked her magic energy since she was reborn, so she wasn't sure. Perhaps she could check it once Leofric returned to the palace.

That is … if Primrose was still alive by then.
