Chapter 4: Sacrifice ( Bebe Rexha)
Adrien’s POV
The deafening thrum of helicopter blades filled the rooftop of Blue Sapphire Hospital, whipping our clothes and hair into disarray as the chopper descended. The late evening sky burned gold behind it, casting long shadows across the landing pad. I stood beside Kai. our Gamma and my mate, waiting as the hospital’s emergency team readied for intake.
The helicopter touched down, and the cabin doors swung open. Alpha Lucas stepped out first, his expression grim, the tension in his jaw unmistakable. Then came Luna Kaylie, strong, radiant, and heavily pregnant cradling little Adam in her arms. She moved with determined grace despite her swollen belly. Behind her, two warriors gently lifted a body wrapped in white cloth the omega from Yellow Stone Pack. Her name was Inggrid.
She was already gone.
Kaylie approached and passed Adam into Melany’s waiting arms. The nanny immediately comforted him as Kaylie turned back to face me.
“Adrien,” she said, her voice low and urgent, “can you perform an autopsy using your healing gift?”
I nodded. “If it’s trauma or magic-related, I’ll know by touch. But if it was illness or poison, I’ll need to examine her organs.”
“Then let’s do it together. I’ll assist with the kidneys and heart. We need answers fast.”
Before I could reply, Kai stepped forward, concern etched across his face. “ Luna Kaylie, are you sure? You’re in your third trimester. Standing for hours... it’s too much.”
Lucas moved beside him, agreeing with a protective edge to his voice. “He’s right. Let Adrien handle this. You should be downstairs helping welcome the alphas. That strategy meeting is crucial for my Alpha King candidacy.”
Kaylie didn’t miss a beat. “You and Beta Jenson can handle politics. But this, this matters more. If we don’t understand what happened to Inggrid, Alpha Alex could blindside us again. I'm not sitting this out.”
She grabbed my hand without another word, tugging me toward the elevator. I glanced back at Kai and Lucas; they both stood there, helpless against the fire of their mates.
Kai chuckled and nudged Lucas. “Feels good, doesn’t it? Having a mate like that?”
Lucas smiled, the affection in his eyes unmistakable. “She’s everything. Kaylie... she’s the warmth that melted the ice around my soul. Every day with her feels like sunlight, pure, steady, and healing. She doesn’t just brighten my world, she rebuilds it.”
Kai nodded, his voice softer now. “She gave us the courage to be who we are. If not for Kaylie, the council would’ve never accepted my bond with Adrien. She fought for our right to love openly... and we became the first bonded gay couple in Blue Sapphire Pack history. Her heart changes everything it touches.”
Lucas placed a hand on his shoulder, and they turned together to welcome the arriving alphas.
Inside the hospital’s surgical chamber, the light was sterile and cold, unlike the emotion boiling just beneath my skin.
Inggrid’s lifeless form lay on the table. Her skin was pale, lips blue, but it was her eyes, still half-open that sent a shiver down my spine. As a healer, I’d witnessed death countless times. But this… this was different.
I reached out and took her hand in mine. A pulse of energy flickered through me. I closed my eyes as the haunting images of her final moments replay in my mind.
A corridor bathed in flickering torchlight. Inggrid, slight and silent, swept her broom along the marble floor outside Alpha Alex’s office. Voices filtered through the open doorway. She paused, tilting her head toward the shadows.
Inside, a woman with raven-black hair sat in a high-backed chair, her face obscured, her voice chilling.
“She killed my son,” the woman said, her tone venomous. “That hybrid… Kaylie. I will take everything from her. My magic can’t harm her directly, but I’ll destroy her through those she loves.”
Inggrid pressed herself closer, heart racing.
“What will you do?” Alpha Alex asked, his voice calm…too calm.
“I’ll infect her pack with darkness. I’ll use my magic to turn her own people against her. Isolate her. Break her. She’ll leave Lucas, and he’ll fall apart. No king, no queen.”
Their laughter sent waves of dread rolling through Inggrid.
Then the woman leaned forward. “Or better yet… I’ll make Lucas the one to drive her away. I’ll poison his mind until he breaks their bond himself.”
Inggrid gasped, and her broom clattered to the floor.
“Who’s there?!” Alex barked.
She stepped into view, trembling. “Just me… Inggrid. I-I was cleaning…”
“You shouldn’t be here,” Alex growled, his eyes darting toward the woman.
The witch stood, lifting one hand. Her voice was quiet but menacing.
“Aubiaau be hiau la mai blas.”
A surge of black light burst from her palm. It struck Inggrid square in the chest. She convulsed, blood seeping from her mouth, collapsing against the wall.
“What are you doing?!” Alex snapped. “She’s from Yellow Stone….my pack!”
The woman’s voice was ice. “I won’t risk her exposing us. One omega is a small price to pay.”
Alex hesitated, then lifted Inggrid in his arms. “Go. Say nothing. If you tell anyone what you heard, Huiwi will finish the job. This is the only mercy I can offer.”
Inggrid stumbled out, barely conscious, her body bruised and bleeding, but her mind fixed on one purpose. She didn’t head home. She couldn’t. Home was behind enemy lines now. With every shaky step into the forest, pain clawed at her, but she forced herself forward. Not for herself, but for Kaylie. The woman who had once saved her, who had shown her kindness when no one else had. Inggrid owed her everything. And now, this... this was how she would repay her. She had to warn Kaylie about Alpha Alex and Huiwi’s twisted plan, even if it cost her life.
But her injuries were too grave. Inggrid barely made it to Kaylie’s side before her knees buckled. With trembling hands and blood-stained lips, she managed only a few broken words...“The witch… danger… coming…” Then her body gave out. She collapsed in Kaylie’s arms, breath faltering.
I opened my eyes in the surgical chamber, Kaylie hovering beside me, concern etched into every line of her face.
“She was cursed,” I said quietly. “It was black magic… a witch named Huiwi. She and Alpha Alex are plotting to use dark spells to tear you and Lucas apart. Not just emotionally, but to kill your bond. To destroy you both.”
Kaylie’s face went pale, her hand instinctively going to her belly.
For a long moment, we sat in silence, surrounded by the low hum of hospital machines and the chilling presence of death.
One omega. One life.
Sacrificed to bring us a warning.
And now, we had to decide what to do with it before it was too late.
