The Loneliest Soul

Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Paths of Power

Maxi woke up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

Like always, his morning started with a bath. But today, he didn't rush. He sat in the warm water, thinking.

He rarely saw his mother. Even though she lived in the same castle.

It made him a little sad. But he understood. She was busy—especially as his father's personal maid.

Still… he hadn't even seen her silhouette during Techxin and Tangen's fight 2 years ago he still remembered every single traumatizing detail.

Maxi frowned, the thought gnawing at him. Why wasn't she there?

He shook his head, pushing it aside. I'll ask Techxin later.

For now, he just enjoyed the warmth.

After finally stepping out of the bath, Maxi dressed quickly.

White undershirt. Brown waistcoat. Black pants and shoes.

He looked at himself in the mirror and laughed softly.

"I really have no fashion sense."

Grabbing his round glasses, he adjusted them before looking at his bookshelf.

Immediately, he shook his head.

"No. I can't go through the torture of reading those regular books again."

Not after experiencing that magnificent library.

So instead, he laid back on his bed, lost in thought.

What kind of power would he get once he received his blessing?

Would it be something strong?

It had to be. He was way behind other children, who got their blessings at five.

But considering who blessed him…

A Demon Kings and a demon Queen.

A Dreamer who had completed the King of Kings' test.

His power had to be something special.

But that brought up another thought—what was the test of the King of Kings even like?

How strong did a Dreamer have to be to complete a test given by this world's creator?

Maxi smiled.

The gods who had blessed him—they were once human.

They had completed the test of 1,000 Spiraling Hells.

They had ascended, taking a risk to become gods.

If I die… would I do the same?

Maxi imagined himself passing the 1,000 Spiraling Hells.

Would he become a Dreamer? Shrouded in mystery, linked to the world of dreams?

Would he become an Angel? A warrior fighting against chaotic existences, sealing the creatures that leaked from the Eldritch Gods' realm?

Or would he become a Demon? One of those who devoured the remnants of souls attempting the test?

Maxi smiled, knowing that the main librarys books, more in-depth explanations of those choices, and their inner workings made his mind just scream with ideas

Which path would he choose?

For hours, Maxi thought of ways to climb their hierarchies.

Until—

Knock, knock.

A voice called from outside.

"Young Master."

The voice shook him out of his thoughts.

He adjusted his glasses, walked over, and opened the door.

Standing there was Angelina.

She looked completely refreshed.

Maxi smiled. "You look extra refreshed today."

Angelina beamed. "I know, right? I feel like I have so much more energy today!"

Maxi muttered under his breath, "I think I have a good idea why."

"What was that, Young Master?"

Maxi smirked. "Nothing. Don't worry about it."

Angelina narrowed her eyes suspiciously but shrugged.

"Okay, whatever you say."

Maxi shook his head, grinning. "Let's just go to Tangen already."

After a few minutes, they arrived at Tangen's room.

Angelina opened the door, and Maxi stepped inside.

Immediately, he noticed something was off.

Tangen looked exhausted.

Dark bags sat under his eyes, and he barely acknowledged Maxi before weakly saying—

"H-Hey there, my dear student. Master Maxi… how are you today?"

Maxi frowned. "Are you okay? You look like a zombie."

Tangen groaned, rubbing his face. "I… forgot to sign some important papers. By the time I realized, I only had three hours left to hand them in."

He sighed dramatically. "So I pulled an all-nighter. I'm exhausted. I don't think I can teach you well today."

Maxi sighed, rubbing his temples.

"Fine. Just give me a brief breakdown of the main points."

Tangen nodded weakly and began explaining.

"Our main history is divided into three major sections."

1. The New Age of Blessings.

2. The Journey Through the Realm of the Earthly Gods.

3. The War of Betrayal and Blood.

Tangen stretched, yawning.

"I was only planning to explain the last part in detail. Because, well… I only know that one. I don't care much about the other two."

Maxi froze.

What?

That was all he was going to learn today?

A single section?

Maxi's eye twitched.

Tangen stretched again. "Alright. That's your breakdown. Now, if you don't mind…"

He collapsed into his chair. "I'm going to take a nap."

Maxi stared at him.

Then, he laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because if he didn't laugh, he would go insane.

Tangen, his only tutor, had just admitted he didn't even care to teach him most of their history.

Maxi stood up.

Walked over to the door.

And kicked it open.

Hard.

His face twisted in anger.

Thank the gods Colen made that offer.

Because if he had to rely on Tangen, he would've lost his mind.
