Chapter 22: Expedition (2)_2
In an instant, the situation reversed again.
Perhaps it wasn't just a simple reversal.
Due to seeing hope through the broken opening, more Gustav Army troops joined the battle. Now, they were all caught within the Southern Alliance's encirclement, facing not only the vast numbers of the Southern Army soldiers but also the large number of Undead Spiders.
With the help of the Undead Spiders, the Southern Army was madly reaping the surrounded Gustav soldiers.
Meanwhile, the true main force of the Southern Undead Army had yet to move. Although a certain number of Undead Spiders had already joined the battle, not a single Lich was seen on the battlefield.
The smile on Augustsburg's face slowly faded. He took a deep breath and sighed softly, "Is there another ambush after this ambush? Hehehe. This is indeed not Lich King Gray. I've studied all of Lich King Gray's past achievements. None of the wars led to large-scale casualties. I thought he would at least let the Liches swarm in to reduce his own casualties. But unfortunately, he didn't."
"Should we let them retreat?" the girl next to him asked.
After thinking for a moment, Augustsburg asked, "How many do you think can come back?"
"Probably not many." The girl stretched her neck to glance twice and replied, "They're already surrounded."
"Since it's not many, then just let them stay. Send someone to inform our emperor, no retreat is allowed. However, there's no need to send in more troops either."
"Yes!" The girl bowed, turned, and left.
...
Soon, the Gustav side's horn sounded on the battlefield. It was the order to urge the attack, but no troops crossed the lines anymore. Even those who had just crossed the lines retreated back.
"They are tightening their defenses." Sarina's voice echoed in Richie's mind.
Turning his face, Richie said to the lords standing beside him, "Attack."
"Attack?" The lords were stunned at once.
"Yes, it's our turn to attack." Richie said softly, "They ambushed us. We have no reason to just take it, right?"
"I think it's probably unnecessary." Benedict II spoke up, "Even though they ambushed us, we didn't suffer much loss. On the contrary, they suffered quite a bit."
"Yes, I think so too." Allen King Banette III hurriedly echoed.
"If we are to attack, I think maybe we should consider letting the bishops of the Templar Church provide support?" Arthur suggested softly.
Camilla also interjected, "Perhaps we can have the Undead Army as the vanguard. Their walls are high, and their defenses are solid. We don't need to bear heavy casualties."
Her father, Duke Bert Gene II, was nodding vigorously beside her.
Yilin watched Richie from afar.
Richie remained silent for a while before he softly said, "Support will come when necessary, attack."
When he said this, Richie's tone was so cold that it made people almost not believe it.
The lords widened their eyes.
Tall walls, strong fortresses, tight defenses. Although in this round of ambush, Gustav's troops had suffered considerable losses, their defenses were intact. A frontal assault would mean huge sacrifices.
However, Richie did not seem to intend to change his mind, still standing quietly. What was present before the lords was a cold, expressionless mask.
After a while, the lords could only nod silently, then send people to give orders.
...
The Southern Alliance's horn sounded on this side. They hadn't even fully swallowed the Gustav troops trapped in their encirclement, yet they already sounded the horn of attack.
Standing on the castle, Augustsburg initially planned to leave but was stunned for a moment.
Right in front of him, a large number of Southern Alliance soldiers began to surge forward. All kinds of siege equipment quickly appeared on the battlefield.
...
"I think maybe... there is no need to let them charge now." Delia's soft voice echoed in Richie's mind.
"Now is the best time. They just suffered a defeat." Richie responded.
"But... we also have casualties."
"You should think the other way around; their casualties are much heavier than ours."
"So why not let the Undead be the vanguard?"
Richie remained silent for a while before he softly answered, "The Undead Army is my trump card. The Black Dragon is the opponent's trump card. If they don't show their trump card, neither should I, if I want to win decisively here."
...
Flags fluttered in the wind.
A large number of Southern Alliance soldiers pushed battering rams forward. Amid the shouts, they heavily struck the city gates.
A dense rain of arrows fell from the sky, but the soldiers continued to charge forward with heavy shields.
Large crossbow arrows made from tree trunks were shot down from the city walls, directly blasting away the soldiers holding the heavy shields.
Rolling stones, boiling water, and oil were poured from the walls. A flaming arrow descended, igniting a blaze beneath the walls.
A large number of soldiers rushed up the cloud ladders, soon to be pushed back again.
Both sides' trebuchets crazily hurled flaming boulders as if a stream of meteors streaked across the night sky.
A fierce battle was unfolding.
The Southern Alliance, although possessing the advantage of numbers, seemed to have no chances of breaking the defenses.
Augustsburg stood quietly on the castle, watching.
"What is he trying to do? Using humans to storm a wall that can be broken by the Undead in an instant, and it might never be broken."
"I don't get it." The Dragon Clan girl beside him whispered, "He doesn't need to do this. Using the Undead is the most proper way. Could it be... he doesn't have enough Lich support?"
Upon hearing this, Augustsburg hesitated, "Not enough Lich support?"
"This so-called Lich King is probably Rich, son of the Lich King. The reason we used humans to ambush was to find out how many Liches were actually involved in this war. If the number of Liches is low enough..."
"But there are quite a few Undead troops here."
"Yes. But a large number of Undead troops do not necessarily mean there are many Liches. Maybe he just brought a lot of 'cannon fodder.' If the Undead are not required to fight autonomously, the magic power needed is minimal. Perhaps two or three Liches could control this many Undead. However, if they engage in battle, they will be easily defeated."
Augustsburg looked towards Richie.
At that moment, a few massive Undead elephants stood up shakily from the Undead Army's camp in the distance and began to move towards the front lines. The soldiers quickly cleared a path for them.
"Does he intend to break the walls with the elephants and use humans as the main force?" Augustsburg touched his chin and thought for a while, then softly said to the girl beside him, "Burn the elephants."
"Burn them? With what?" The girl was stunned for a moment.
"With our people. Are you expecting those humans to burn the elephants? Send our people, two will be enough, no more. Let's see if he really lacks Lich support."
"Yes!"
...
Behind the chaotic walls, a large number of Gustav soldiers were busy with the defense.
Suddenly, two soldiers stood still.
In the next moment, the two transformed into massive Black Dragons with a loud "clang" and jumped onto the walls. Under the weight, the thick walls began to waver.
Even the Gustav soldiers scattered in fear.
Spreading their wings, the two Black Dragons slowly took off, soaring over the walls and howling towards the elephants.
