Chapter 20: Richie's Will (2)_2
"It seemed like this," the Lich nodded skeptically.
"But now we are facing a division."
"Are we?"
"Remember last night? The meeting last night, we couldn't even reach a consensus. I believe that you all are steadfast supporters of justice."
"Of course."
"But not all of us are steadfast in supporting justice and believing in the Holy Light. Many are just enjoying the benefits of justice. If humans know that father is gone, if humans become divided, if our actions are not praised, if all our efforts face negative feedback, then...how many of us will waver?"
All of a sudden, the Liches were stunned.
After a while, Bruto quietly said, "You're right, I think Simon isn't as steadfast as I am."
The Liches present nodded in agreement.
"Yes, I also think he isn't as steadfast as you are," Richie quickly said, "but we can't say that directly to him, otherwise he will be angry, and then the White Bone Holy Light Court will immediately split. There are many like Simon among us. I believe that everyone here is the most steadfast, but I'm not sure about the others. This is a crisis that we must resolve. To stabilize the Human Lords and avoid the division of humans, which could lead to the division of the White Bone Holy Light Court, I decided to disguise myself as father. This method has proven very effective."
The Liches present were caught off guard.
"Just now, I discussed with the Human Lords. They hope that we launch an immediate attack. After all, the resources expended by the Human Army are terrifying, and they are about to collapse. We need to cooperate with them, otherwise, even if we win the war, we won't be able to reap the fruits of victory. Because no one will take over the territories we've conquered. That way, Heaven and Hell will have a chance to take advantage."
The Liches were still recovering.
After a while, Bruto quietly summarized, "So, to prevent division, you disguised yourself as your father, deceived the Human Lords."
"Yes," Richie replied.
"And because we need to achieve true victory over the Black Dragons, we must accede to the humans' request and launch an attack on the Dragon Clan. Otherwise, we might win but won't be able to control Gustav?"
"Yes," Richie nodded, "I know Uncle Bruto, you weren't very supportive of launching an immediate attack on the Black Dragon Clan before, but the situation is special. I hope Uncle Bruto can make a slight sacrifice for the cause of justice. Now, the precarious cause of justice needs your support. Changing your mind isn't because you're weak, but for the cause of justice."
The Liches were silent, looking at each other.
Bruto lowered his head in thought.
Richie quietly waited for Bruto's response.
After a while, Bruto heavily nodded, "Of course, I'm very willing to change my decision for the cause of justice. I'm a partner of justice."
"Thank you, Uncle Bruto. On behalf of all justice partners, I thank you," Richie bowed. Looking at the other Liches, Richie continued, "Now I have to persuade Simon and the others. You know, many of them are not steadfast in the cause of justice, and persuading them will be exceptionally difficult. Additionally, I hope everyone here doesn't insist too much on their opinions during meetings. After all, as long as we are united, we will definitely win, but stubbornness will only lead to our division. The White Bone Holy Light Court now relies on all of you. We must guard the fruits of our father's life-sacrifice."
"Of course, we are very willing to do so," several Liches shrugged, "We are partners of justice, the White Bone Holy Light Court now only relies on us. Can it rely on Simon and them?"
Richie silently bowed and turned to leave.
As he left, he heard several Liches whispering.
"My God, I didn't know we were in such danger now. I thought we could easily defeat the Black Dragons."
"No choice, there are too many unsteady people in our team. I know several myself."
"So we should be more united."
...
Soon, Richie arrived in front of Simon.
"Uncle Bruto's faith in justice is not steadfast."
"Yes, I noticed that early on."
"His lack of steadfastness can easily be exploited by Heaven and Hell. Therefore, I hope Uncle Simon can stand firmly on the side of justice; we must find a way to guard the fruits of our father's life-sacrifice."
"I'm very willing to stand on the side of justice."
"So, I hope Uncle Simon won't quarrel with others anymore. We need a unified opinion. Five fingers clenched together and hit out, even if it doesn't hit anything, it won't matter. But if the fingers are not united, even if they hit out, it'll result in a fracture."
"Uh...you mean I need to listen to Bruto?"
"No, not exactly. I mean it's time for you to make a sacrifice for justice. If you don't agree, our cause will be ruined."
"Hmm...well, if my contribution is that important, I'm very willing."
"Thank you, Uncle Simon. On behalf of all justice partners, I thank you."
Richie then hurried to the next location.
...
"Uncle Glassley..."
...
"Aunt Erin..."
...
"Uncle William..."
...
"Uncle Green..."
...
"Uncle Babuti..."
Richie persuaded them one by one.
Sarina quietly said, "You're creating a false panic."
Richie softly replied, "This isn't false, there is indeed such a possibility; I'm just slightly exaggerating it."
"But you say different things to each person, even, it's you who asked the Human Lords to launch an immediate attack, not them asking for it. They are prepared for long-term warfare."
"I just used them as an excuse; I need a reason. 'I think,' 'I feel,' obviously are not convincing statements."
"You also created a certain degree of opposition?"
"I simply made them have a competitive relationship."
"You convince every one of them, offering glory, making them have no opinion, doesn't that leave only your opinion?"
Moonlight slanted in through the window.
Richie did not answer, just lowered his head, flipping through the materials left by Gray, busy with his own affairs.
"You are completely different from your father," Sarina continued in Richie's mind, "This approach is more like a devil's means. Yet you are going to use it to maintain the cause of justice. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised."
"Means are neither good nor evil; only the person using means can be good or evil," Richie pulled out a letter, held it in his hand, and examined it carefully, softly saying, "Alright, I don't want to discuss this with you. There's still a lot to do; I have to imitate father's handwriting and tone to write a letter to mother, otherwise she might overthink."
"What about Duke Beisher? She raised questions today, aren't you going to answer her?"
"No need. I can't answer her, nor can I hurt her. At the same time, she has no evidence. I just need to remain silent. There are many troubles now, more troublesome things than this."
"Alright."
Lowering his head, Richie began to write. After several failed attempts, the wastebasket beside him was full of discarded papers.
Guardian Angel Delia leaned against the desk, resting her chin on her hand, silently watching.
