Chapter 164: Misdirection (4)
Sentinel sighed as his cannon turned to face the enemies scattering amongst the ruins in the forest. A loud blast rang out as a crimson beam shot forward, evaporating all of those caught in its trajectory. 'Cockroaches...' He frowned as Friday fed intel to his cybernetic eye. He had received the warning that these people had infiltrated the Empire, but he had been caught up dealing with the Lords alongside Rust for too long.
"Sir..." Friday hummed as he gathered new information from the sensors in the region. "It seems this isn't the main group. Sensors in Murk Point have detected a larger force."
"Any idea what they're here for this time? Murk Point is a shithole. I doubt there's something there that they want." Sentinel growled as he tried to make sense of the situation. Friday's sensors were in the middle of relaying the information about the groups' movements since they had arrived.
Sentinel did not even blink as a green orb suddenly appeared next to him. One of the contraptions on his belt flew towards it and unfolded to encase the strange ability. Preventing it from doing whatever it was supposed to. The cannon immediately turned to face a solid wall that ran between a group of trees and fired. Needless to say, he was not troubled with any more of those orbs after that.
"Sir... I've detected an anomaly in the data..." Friday's tone sounded concerned as he sent the information through to Sentinel.
'What's this?' Sentinel frowned as he scanned the information. It seemed that this group had come across Jason during their travels while in Murk Point. But there was something else. There were three other readings that had not set off Friday's warning systems. What made matters worse was that this other group had also been paying attention to the youth.
'That can't be a coincidence... What did he do?' Sentinel scanned through the data quickly to see how events had proceeded. The group he was hunting had engaged Jason's caravan in combat before the unknown group seemed to interfere. Sentinel was relieved to see that Jason had made it out of that situation. 'He should be back in Highrise by now...'
Needless to say, Sentinel felt his fury rising at this group for attacking Jason. Even if they did not know how important he was to him, he still had to make them pay. 'No more quick deaths...' He growled as he continued his gruesome work.
Meanwhile, in an area near Murk Point...
"We can't stay here much longer." Archive sighed as she continued to watch future events. "Sentinel has detected our presence. But things are already in motion. He's going to have his hands full once he gets here."
"Finally! We need to get you out of here as soon as possible. We never should have come here in the first place!" One of her guards complained. "Let's leave them to destroy each other."
Archive chuckled at his comment. "The Empire won't fall that easily. But neither will they have it easy. So much is coming and they have no idea. Jason will be the spark that ignites it. We just have to wait for the right moment to tell him everything."
A loud noise suddenly came from the workshop holding the Murk Walkers. The trio cast their sights towards the doors. 'Here it goes...' Archive sighed as events began to unfold exactly as she had predicted.
The residents of Murk Point went into an uproar as the upgraded Murk Walker barged through the wall of the workshop and made a dash for the foul black liquid. They did not care what they destroyed along their path as they trampled stalls and people as if they meant nothing. The members of the alliance on board shouted ecstatically. They were certain that Sentinel would not bother to chase them once they got far enough away. At the same time, they had succeeded in seizing this new machine full of strange new materials.
"Ok, that's enough... Let's get out of here before they wake it up..." Archive shook her head slowly as she turned to leave. 'We'll have to take a different route to stop Sentinel from tracking us down. Those sensors of his don't cover everywhere.'
As the Murk Walker reached the foul substance and began to race away from the outraged citizens, something beneath the depths began to stir at the disturbance within its domain. Six large reptilian eyes opened at once as the creature waited to see if it would end quickly, like before.
However, whatever was moving was coming closer. The creature let out a warning growl that vibrated through the liquid. Causing waves to appear on the surface! The onlookers from Murk Point stared in shock at that development. All they could see were the waves crashing on the stolen machine. Cries of panic rang out over the foul lake as several of the soldiers on board got splashed.
The liquid was acidic. Skin, hair and organs began to melt into a messy puddle that gave off an awful stench. Its smell was rather similar to the black, bubbling lake. It was at that point that the alliance commander on board suddenly realised something. His eyes frantically scanned the area in shock. Disbelief invaded his mind as he momentarily froze.
Then, his fears came true. The messy puddles created from his comrades turned black. 'Don't tell me... The entire lake is made from melted bodies!' His mind raced as he tried to figure out how many people and beasts had to die to create such a large area. However, he never got the chance to find a number. A much larger wave crashed over the Murk Walker, completely engulfing everyone who was still alive.
The citizens of Murk Point watched on in horror. A mountain suddenly appeared in the foul lake. The black liquid ran down it like waterfalls as a deafening sound was let loose...
