Chapter 8: A new chapter begins
The morning sun streamed through the windows of Newt's cozy home, casting a golden glow on the myriad of magical plants thriving in the greenhouse. Jamie knelt beside a patch of shimmering Moondew blooms, carefully trimming their delicate petals with a silver knife. Beside him, a cauldron bubbled softly, emitting a sweet, herbal aroma.
Newt stood in the doorway, watching with quiet pride. The boy who had once arrived at his doorstep frightened and lost was now flourishing. Jamie's gift with magical creatures had only deepened, but he had also discovered a passion for Herbology and potion-making.
The greenhouse was now as much Jamie's domain as Newt's. Shelves lined with jars of powdered roots and dried flowers stood alongside Newt's notes on magical creatures. Several plants flourished under Jamie's care, including a vibrant Venomous Tentacula that had grown remarkably tame.
Newt approached, leaning casually on the doorframe. "That Moondew looks radiant. You've got a real knack for keeping it healthy."
Jamie looked up, grinning. "It's all about the balance," he explained. "Too much sunlight, and the petals lose their shimmer. Too little, and they won't grow at all."
Newt chuckled. "You've become quite the expert. At this rate, you'll outshine even Professor Sprout someday."
Jamie laughed, his hazel eyes sparkling. "Maybe. But I've still got a lot to learn."
Later that morning, a sharp tapping at the window caught Jamie's attention. He looked up to see a regal-looking barn owl perched on the sill, a letter clutched in its beak.
"Newt!" Jamie called excitedly.
Newt emerged from the study, his brows furrowing as he noticed the owl. "It seems you've got mail."
Jamie opened the window, and the owl hopped inside, dropping the envelope into his hands before fluttering to a perch near the fireplace. Jamie stared at the letter, his heart pounding. The thick parchment and emerald-green ink were unmistakable.
"Go on," Newt encouraged, his voice gentle.
Jamie carefully broke the wax seal and unfolded the letter. His eyes scanned the words, his hands trembling slightly as he read aloud:
Dear Mr. Carter,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of necessary books and equipment. Term begins on 1 September.
Jamie looked up, his face a mixture of shock and joy. "I got in," he whispered. "I'm going to Hogwarts!"
Newt's smile was wide and genuine. "Of course you are. I never doubted it for a second."
