Chapter 21: Fractures
"All fortresses fall. Some from outside… others from within."
---
📍 Shadow Flame Stronghold – Central Hall
The torches flickered as Kael entered the main chamber. His cloak of living shadow trailed behind him, silent and weightless. Yet, the silence among his allies was loud.
Myrla, Syl, Nara… they stood apart. A triangle of trust pulled thin by invisible threads.
No one spoke.
Kael stopped before them.
"There's a traitor," he said simply.
Syl crossed her arms. "We know."
Myrla frowned. "So… what now? Interrogations? Surveillance?"
Nara's gaze dropped to the floor.
Kael's voice was calm. Too calm.
"From now on, no one moves alone."
---
📍 Guild Dragoon – Command Center
Ezrien watched from behind an illusioned glass wall as intercepted Shadow Flame messages scrolled across the display.
The infiltrator's reports had become more detailed, more precise.
> "Kael no longer trusts his inner circle.
Seeds of fracture are planted.
Reinforcement of distrust active."
She smiled.
"Begin phase two," she ordered. "Let them destroy themselves."
---
📍 Myrla – Personal Quarters
Myrla's hands trembled as she scanned the second page of the Dominion Chain documents.
> Subject K-VR01 shows high adaptability to Shadow Core absorption.
Unstable behavior noted post-test phase.
Suggest remote observation only. Subject not to be informed of origin.
She turned the page.
A blurry image of a boy in chains.
Even though it was old and distorted…
It was him.
Kael.
She sat back, overwhelmed.
"They made him a vessel. Before the portals. Before the world fell apart."
She stood up.
She needed to decide: tell him the truth—or protect him from it.
---
📍 Kael – The Meditation Hall
Kael knelt in the dark, eyes closed.
> [Warning: Internal corruption node expanding]
[Unknown influence detected – Origin: Fragment]
[Cognitive sync: destabilized]
The System whispered with two voices now.
One was familiar. Cold. Logical.
The other… was hunger wrapped in silk.
"Do you hear it, Kael?" the new voice whispered. "The truth behind your strength? Behind me?"
Kael gritted his teeth.
"You're not part of me."
> [Shadow Authority: Disputed]
[System Integrity: 82%]
Then silence.
He opened his eyes, breathing heavily.
There was something else inside the system now.
And it was watching.
---
📍 Syl – Barracks
Syl sharpened a dagger that didn't need sharpening.
Her hands were steady, but her mind raced.
Since the fragment was found, Kael had grown colder. More distant. And now he watched them all.
She hated being watched.
Suddenly, a flicker.
A presence behind her.
She spun—blade raised.
But there was no one there.
Only a shadow, clinging to the wall longer than it should have.
She didn't speak. Just whispered to herself:
"We're not alone anymore."
---
📍 Underground – Hidden Chamber
The infiltrator kneeled before the second relay.
They placed the second fragment into the stone altar. It fused instantly, vanishing into the structure.
Above them, deep within the stronghold…
The walls shifted, just slightly.
Enough to be felt by the shadows.
---
📍 Kael – Inner Sanctum
Kael stared at the flickering shadows on his walls.
They pulsed like veins now.
Alive.
> [Warning: Shadow Contamination Level 2 Initiated]
[Projected System Collapse in 4.7 cycles unless contained]
He pressed his palm to the floor. Felt it tremble.
"…Who are you?" he asked aloud.
From the darkness… an answer came.
A whisper in a language he had never learned.
But still understood.
> "We are what you were built to become."
His eyes widened.
---
📍 Final Scene – Distant Cavern Below the Veil
A circle of symbols ignited slowly on the stone.
Chains shattered one by one.
A silhouette, crowned in fractured halos of obsidian, stirred in the void.
> "Executor Kael… I remember you."
