Chapter 50: “I'VE GOT YOUR BACK”
As soon as Yu Chen reached his computer, he quickly put on his headset and mic, grabbing his controller. His eyes flicked to the screen—there were two avatars: Everstay and Somi. They were holding off four level-3 trolls, guarding his motionless character, Omega.
Without hesitation, he took control of Omega, who instantly stood and rushed forward to back up Everstay in the fight.
"What the hell, Omega? Where have you been?" Everstay snapped.
"You were almost killed by a Hixer a few minutes ago!" Somi added, frustration in her voice. "We've been calling you non-stop!"
"Uh... sorry, Somi," Yu Chen muttered, then paused as he read the name floating above the other avatar. "And… Every... stay?"
"Everstay," Ye Qiu corrected calmly, too focused on the fight to be bothered.
Yu Chen watched them both fight—clean, coordinated moves, quick reactions. They weren't even official pros yet, but they fought like veterans. He narrowed his eyes, surprised.
"Wait... who are you guys?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"Questions for later. Behind you—Everstay!" Somi shouted.
Everstay, focused on one troll, didn't notice the second lunging from behind. With a swift motion, Omega turned and sliced through both trolls in one move. Somi finished off the last one with a clean, lethal strike.
Silence fell.
The three of them stood in the aftermath, quietly staring at one another.
"Great skills you got there," Somi finally said with a half-smile. "Like you already know, I'm Somi."
"Everstay," Ye Qiu said simply—never one for small talk.
From that moment on, they sticked together.
King's Avatar: Epic Quest a next-generation multiplayer game with highly immersive tech that let players interact in real-time across China and Over sea. One unique feature in the game was the Beacon Mode—a system that let players signal when they were looking for a team or a partner.
As long as a player had their Beacon Mode turned on, they would become visible in the "Recruitment Zone"—a shared area in the game world where other solo players or teams looking to recruit could meet, observe, and interact. It was the ultimate social hub for guild building.
That's how Omega met Everstay and Somi. At the time, none of them knew how far this new alliance would go. But something about that first battle just… clicked.
Omega sat up on his bed, staring blankly at the glow of his ceiling light. For some reason, the air felt heavier than usual. A restless ache gnawed in his chest — not fear, exactly… just pressure. A kind of weight only a leader could feel.
He reached for his phone and scrolled past a few names. Then his thumb paused on one:
"Ye Qiu."
A small smirk tugged at his lips.
Six years.
Six years of fighting side by side as teammates… friends… brothers. And yet, he'd only just learned Everstay's real name — Ye Qiu — a few days ago. Only just gotten his personal number.
Funny how people could be so close and still carry pieces of themselves in silence.
He hesitated.
Then tapped Call.
[Phone rings once… twice…]
Ye Qiu:
"Hey, bud."
Omega:
"Hey."
His voice came out duller than intended — flat, unconvincing. Ye Qiu caught it instantly.
Ye Qiu:
"Everything okay over there?"
Omega:
"Same old, same..." He let out a quiet sigh. "Except one thing, though."
Ye Qiu (with a light chuckle):
"Let me guess—the upcoming match's messing with your head?"
Omega (sighing, rubbing his forehead):
"I didn't think it'd hit me like this, but damn... It's like we've been thrown into the fire. No breather, no support. We're still trying to breathe through the backlash, and now we've gotta carry a match too?"
Ye Qiu:
"I know, right. It's brutal. The pressure, the hate. Everyone's got something to say. But That's the game, man. Cold and loud."
He pauses, then his tone sharpens—like a quiet fire catching wind.
Ye Qiu:
"But hey, you know what's louder? Winning. Proving them wrong so hard the haters choke on their own damn opinions. That's what I wanna see. Proving every doubter wrong. Winning—not just for the scoreboard, but for every disappointed fan watching from the sidelines, waiting to see if we're still worth rooting for."
Omega stays silent, but his grip on the phone tightens. Ye Qiu can feel the storm in him, even through the line. He paused — just for a second — and when he continued, his voice was softer. Almost pained.
Ye Qiu:
"I want them to see that my screw-up was mine alone. Not Dragon's. This team doesn't rise or fall with just me. Dragon's only done for when every one of us walks away. And that sure as hell isn't happening now."
There was silence on the other end. Not the kind that begged for words—but the kind that settled. Omega didn't need to explain anything; Ye Qiu already knew. He knew the weight Omega was carrying stepping up to lead, the nerves coiling tighter with each passing hour. And he also knew Omega wasn't the type to say it out loud.
Ye Qiu: "You're gonna kill it out there, Yu Chen. You've got this. And I've got your back."
Omega : (after a breath)
"Thanks, man."
