Chapter 443: Raising Death Flags and Jinxing
The crowman hid on the tree trunk, wrapping itself with wings, its slender form resembling a bizarre branch.
Fang Zhou and Night Mouse didn't notice at first; by the time they did, it was too late.
Out of the corner of Fang Zhou's eye, he saw only a flash of black light; this crowman had already charged at him, aiming a thrust at his chest.
Swoosh!
Fang Zhou chose not to dodge but instead instantly swapped places with Bi An.
Luckily, he had summoned Bi An in advance, otherwise, he would have suffered a hidden loss.
The crowman's black longsword, filled with cursed magic, struck Bi An's abdomen, but was blocked by armor.
Bi An swung his fist, landing a heavy punch on the crowman's forehead. With a crack, the crowman's head snapped backward, its spine fractured.
It fell into the swamp, still flailing and struggling, its life force remarkably tenacious.
Fang Zhou summoned the Xuanyuan Sword and delivered two additional strikes, not out of sympathy, but to collect soul power.
Previously in the underground tunnel, during the mass slaughter of maggot people, Fang Zhou had already collected a lot of soul power, although he temporarily didn't know its use. However, collecting it was undoubtedly a good idea.
If he needed it later, it would save effort. If not, collecting it didn't waste much time either.
Night Mouse was also startled by the crowman's ambush and couldn't help but say, "Be more careful, there's also a type of crowman mage, also troublesome to deal with. But fortunately, there are very few of them. As long as our luck isn't too bad, we won't encounter them."
Fang Zhou cast Night Mouse an annoyed glance; this guy often jinxed them with his words.
He felt compelled to counter-jinx, "If we're going to encounter something, we'll deal with it soon."
Night Mouse: …
Just after Fang Zhou's remark, they soon encountered a crowman mage.
Night Mouse sent an annoyed look back at Fang Zhou, as if saying, "Look at that jinxed mouth of yours."
Fang Zhou glared back with dissatisfaction, "You shouldn't have set that flag; now I can't take it down."
The crowman mage did not ambush them; it stood on a dead tree, black wings stretched wide, grasping a fungus-covered magic wand with its three-jointed hands.
Fang Zhou exhaled, summoned all the Xuanyuan Swords, and initiated a preemptive strike, launching a volley at the crowman mage.
The crowman mage raised the magic wand high and struck it heavily against the tree trunk with a resonant clang.
"Caw! Caw! Caw!"
A ray of black light shot from the wand, splitting into a flock of loudly cawing crows, colliding with the Xuanyuan Swords shot by Fang Zhou.
Sixty-four golden sword beams, like a machine gun, mowed down the crows in droves.
But the crows generated by the crowman mage seemed endless, quickly filling the surroundings, nearly obscuring the sky.
Another clang of the magic wand striking the tree trunk echoed, and the flock of crows fiercely dove towards Fang Zhou and Night Mouse.
Fang Zhou grabbed Night Mouse, swapped places with Bi An, and swiftly escaped beyond the reach of the crows.
The Xuanyuan Sword converged into a beam of light, piercing through the crows' assault, aimed at the crowman mage.
"Boom!"
The dead tree shattered into pieces; the crowman mage unfolded its wings and ascended into the sky.
Fang Zhou anticipated this, raising his hand to send a golden wave directly at the crowman mage's chest.
Bi An followed up by flying up, delivering a punch to the crowman mage's head, causing it to explode.
With the crowman mage's death, the surrounding crows immediately scattered, cawing as they flew away.
Fang Zhou suddenly understood where the crow they spotted drinking water in Lorric City came from, though the mystery of how it avoided the anti-air guns remained unsolved.
Seeing the crowman mage defeated, Night Mouse breathed a sigh of relief, saying to Fang Zhou, "You're still the impressive one!"
Fang Zhou, however, remained unsatisfied, knowing the crowman mage was just a minor enemy.
Though he dealt with it easily, he had used his main methods. If a higher level monster appeared, it would surely be more hectic.
Night Mouse mentioned that Fran Fortress was more dangerous than Lorric City, which certainly wasn't an exaggeration; they hadn't even entered the fortress yet, and the monsters encountered were already tough.
After dealing with the crowman mage, the two continued flying deeper into the Poison Mist Swamp, encountering several crowman warriors, which Fang Zhou, now prepared, handled smoothly without encountering more crowman mages.
After nearly traversing most of the swamp, Fang Zhou finally saw the campsite.
The campsite was a simple stone structure, surrounded by a circle of walls; astonishingly, in this desolate place, there were several tower-like eye structures.
Exactly how obsessed is this world with constructing anti-air guns?
Fortunately, there weren't many of them; Fang Zhou had Bi An fly over and destroy the anti-air guns on the walls before entering with Night Mouse.
The layout inside the camp was straightforward: over a dozen stone houses, a small training ground, and then a pyramid-shaped Fire Stone platform with a large, dark pit on top, seemingly containing some dried black oil.
Within the camp roamed many phantom soldiers. According to Night Mouse, each of the three camps had a black knight stationed.
These phantom soldiers, save for their use of bows and crossbows, had no anti-air capability; once Fang Zhou dealt with the archers, the rest became sitting targets.
Before Fang Zhou could finish eliminating the phantom soldiers, Night Mouse, who was spectating from afar, let out a shout, "Watch out!"
A dark figure shot straight up from the camp, lunging at Fang Zhou hovering in the air.
Fang Zhou, prepared, immediately swapped places with Bi An.
"Hah!"
Bi An let out a ferocious shout, delivering a powerful punch to the incoming shadow.
The punch landed on the shadow's chest, emitting a metallic thud; the figure was knocked down by Bi An's punch.
"Boom!"
The shadow struck the stone-paved ground, creating a sizable pit.
Once the dust settled, Fang Zhou saw the shadow's form clearly.
It wore a black full-body armor striped with patterns, a helmet with two long, sharp horns, and wielded a thick shield and a knight's greatsword.
Clearly a turtle-like monster, Bi An's powerful punch only left a small dent in the black knight's chest.
It shook its head, got up from the ground, and looked skyward at Fang Zhou.
With slightly bent knees, it once again leaped from the ground toward Fang Zhou.
Fang Zhou remained composed, lacking the seriousness he showed when facing the crowman mage, as the black knight had no flying capability and was innately at a serious disadvantage against aerial foes.
Bi An stood in Fang Zhou's defense once more, punching the leaping black knight back down.
Fang Zhou summoned the Xuanyuan Sword, aiming at the fallen black knight, maximizing his output as golden sword lights rained down.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
The black knight couldn't even rise, left prone to endure the onslaught of sword lights.
