Chapter 6: The Market and Reflection
The next morning carried a crisp but refreshing breeze as Marlin and Ryan walked together towards the market. The narrow cobblestone streets were bustling with activity, as horse-drawn carriages and people dressed in elegant Victorian attire filled the scene. The air was alive with energy, filled with greetings and the voices of vendors calling out to potential customers.
Upon reaching the market, Marlin observed how warmly the vendors treated Ryan. He was greeted with friendly smiles and kind words, as if each vendor knew him personally. "Ryan! It's been a while. How have you been?" one vendor called out with a broad smile, offering some ripe apples.
"I'm good, thank you. I'll take some of those today," Ryan replied, selecting a few apples and placing them in a small basket. Ryan's interactions with the vendors seemed natural, as if he was a part of this life, while Marlin watched silently, absorbing the warmth surrounding Ryan.
They wandered through stalls that sold everything from fresh fruits to beautiful fabrics, passing by cookware and household items. They decided to purchase some essentials for the house, including bread, butter, and fresh herbs for cooking. As they walked, the air was filled with the aroma of cooked food mingling with the scent of burning wood from nearby fireplaces.
The market was set in an area lined with beautiful Victorian buildings, with multiple stories and large windows adorned with flowers. Ornate iron columns lined the sides of the road, adding a touch of architectural elegance. Along the way, wooden signs hung above the shops, their names engraved in stylish fonts.
As they strolled, Marlin took in the small details of the scene, from artisans displaying their crafts to children playing in narrow alleyways. Everything felt like a scene from an old story, yet Marlin couldn't ignore how remarkably orderly things were. There were no signs of theft or chaos, which one might expect in a busy market.
"It's a bit strange, don't you think?" Marlin said, looking around.
"What do you mean?" Ryan asked, placing some herbs into the basket.
"The security system here... Usually, in markets like this, you'd expect some thefts or disorder, but here, everything seems calm and organized."
Ryan smiled and said, "That's because of the protection system enforced by the cathedral. The God of Darkness ensures safety and order in this place. People here value this protection and believe in it, so they don't feel the need to resort to theft or harm."
Marlin was surprised as he listened to Ryan's explanation. He hadn't expected the God of Darkness to play such a positive role in society. He was accustomed to the stereotypical association of darkness with evil and decay, but here, darkness represented protection and order.
As Marlin pondered these details, he felt a sense of peace, though his thoughts continued to wrestle with his past and present life. The market experience stirred memories of days spent with his family in his previous life, but he knew he now had to build a new life here, one that aligned with this strange world.
Eventually, they decided to head to the cathedral to see the preparations for the God of Darkness's mass. As they walked through the bustling streets, Marlin felt a glimmer of hope creeping into his heart. Perhaps, in this new world, he could find his own path, one that would restore what he had lost and offer him a chance for inner peace.
