The Illusion Of Life

Chapter 14: Veil of Secrets

The moon hung in the sky, casting its pale glow over the village, while the air carried a heavy silence as if holding its breath. At the forefront, Cardinal Toberos strode confidently, his dark robes blending seamlessly with the night's shadows. Behind him, Aletheia, the Lady of Silence, followed with a calm that mirrored the stillness itself, while their followers moved silently like specters.

Toberos finally broke the silence, his voice low but weighted with meaning. "The abduction… it was no ordinary event. There was something strange about that boy. A faint, tainted energy was seeping from him, like whispers of the Abyss coursing through his veins."

Aletheia paused, her cold gaze masking the depth of her thoughts. "Why would the followers of the Abyss abduct one of their own?" she asked in a steady tone, devoid of any emotion.

Toberos shook his head slowly, his narrowed eyes reflecting his puzzlement. "I don't know. But we will find out soon enough."

In the distant cottage away from the village, Marlin sat on the floor, tightly bound. Despite the terror surrounding him, a flicker of hope ignited within his consciousness. If there were supernatural forces here, perhaps I can find a way back to my world. Maybe all is not lost yet.

The leader stood before him with a cold smile, his eyes gleaming with shadows of mystery. He turned to one of his followers and calmly commanded, "Begin the plan."

The followers moved swiftly, leaving the cottage toward the village. Within minutes, the distant sound of explosions echoed through the air. Flames shot into the sky, lighting the dark night with a horrific red glow.

From his spot in the cottage, Marlin watched the scene unfold in terror. The explosions came one after another, the ground trembling beneath them as smoke billowed into the sky, carrying with it the screams of villagers fleeing in every direction.

The leader laughed maniacally, watching the devastation from afar. "This is only the beginning."

Marlin felt a profound sense of helplessness engulf him. His heart pounded in his chest, his eyes wide with fear. He knew that the people he had met in this world, despite the short time, had become a part of his life. Yet now, bound and unable to move, he could do nothing to help them. Every scream from the village pierced his heart, amplifying his sense of powerlessness.

As the shadows filled the cottage, Marlin struggled with his deepest fears, knowing that survival was his only option. But how could he survive when he was powerless to save those he had begun to feel connected to?
