Chapter 31: [31] A bit of an unlucky day
-Ash Costantine-
As expected, the company has flourished rapidly within just half a year. Of course, this success is largely due to Ciel's role in shaping a highly effective management structure.
Production is no longer entirely dependent on me. I've delegated some of the product manufacturing to competent teams, though the production of cosmetics remains under my direct supervision. It's a necessity.
The demand for cosmetics from the aristocracy is very high, especially among women. They are willing to travel from distant regions, even from neighboring kingdoms, just to order a single package of high-quality cosmetics from me.
Naturally, this has brought about its share of challenges. One of them is dealing with the kingdom's government officials. They not only interfere with my business but also threaten the safety of those close to me. Therefore, I formed a security task force composed of trained fighters. Most of them are former slaves I freed, possessing exceptional combat skills. I also personally train them to become elite guards for the company.
Additionally, I established housing for employees, such as dormitories, to ensure they can work safely and comfortably under the company's protection. This also helps shield them from threats posed by those who wish to undermine my business.
The most troublesome issue has been dealing with the kingdom. Many officials dislike the presence of my company, especially the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince. They continuously harass me in various ways. While I can tolerate the Prime Minister, why is the Crown Prince involved? Of course, it's because I rejected his overt invitation seeking support for my rapidly growing company.
Given the complexity of the situation, I decided to form a shadow force to act as intelligence, monitoring the movements of influential figures who might harm the company. With Ciel's assistance, the force, code-named Hassan, was successfully established within a few months.
The Hassan force consists of trained individuals skilled in disguise and information gathering. They are scattered across the kingdom, observing and reporting any emerging threats. With this force in place, I feel more confident that the company and those close to me will remain safe from external threats.
Moreover, I am also focusing on business expansion into new territories. With the support of Ciel and a solid management team, we have successfully opened branches in several other major cities. Each branch is equipped with stringent security systems and modern production facilities, ensuring that product quality is maintained.
Demand continues to rise, and we have managed to attract interest from aristocrats across various kingdoms. They are drawn to the quality and innovation we offer, especially in cosmetics. We are also developing new product lines, including perfumes and beauty accessories, which further enhance the company's appeal.
With all these steps, I am confident that Constantine Group will continue to grow and become one of the leading companies in the kingdom.
...
On a busy day, the large Constantine store received an unusual visitor. Amidst the crowd of customers, a member of the royal family arrived.
"Ariel Anemoi Asura?" I asked my secretary.
"Yes, Mr. Ash. Princess Ariel has personally requested a meeting with you," she replied.
I sighed, leaning back in my chair. The second princess and third in line to the throne. Given her status, I immediately understood the purpose of her visit.
However, unlike the Crown Prince who openly sought commissions and support from the company, Princess Ariel had not made any such demands. Not that she wouldn't, but she chose to meet me first.
Rubbing my chin, my brown eyes glimmered. To face people, I must disguise myself as a human, not a Beastman. Would she be surprised if I revealed my identity? Hmm, interesting.
"Reschedule my appointments and inform her guard to meet me this afternoon," I instructed.
"Right away, Mr. Ash," my secretary responded, hurrying off.
As she was about to leave, I suddenly remembered something and asked her before she could exit.
"By the way, where are Zephyr and Aurelia now?"
"My secretary replied, "They are on a quest, collecting herbs," she said quickly.
I nodded. "Becoming adventurers, huh?" These siblings had taken up adventuring in this kingdom? I heard that this place is not suitable for adventurers due to knights actively hunting monsters. However, if the quests are not too significant, like gathering herbs, there shouldn't be any major issues.
"You may go now," I said, waving my hand toward my secretary.
...
In the afternoon, I sat in the meeting room, awaiting Princess Ariel's arrival. The room was adorned with elegant ornaments, reflecting the company's luxury and wealth. When the door opened, a young woman with long golden hair and sharp blue eyes entered, accompanied by her guards.
"Mr. Ash Constantine, thank you for taking the time to meet with me," she said in a soft yet authoritative voice.
"Pleased to meet you, Princess Ariel. Please have a seat," I replied, gesturing to a chair in front of me.
I observed Princess Ariel as she sat on the sofa in front of me, with her guards standing alert behind her. Noticing her, she seemed to be around the same age as my adopted children. Her face radiated gentle beauty, but there was a hidden firmness behind her blue eyes.
"So, the famously introverted Princess Ariel has mustered the courage to meet me?" I said directly with a sharp tone.
One of her guards, looking displeased with my remark, immediately reached for his sword. Noticing this, I gave a sly smile. It doesn't matter if Princess Ariel's guard draws his sword at me; I can't guarantee that person will return alive. Well, I'm generous, but not towards my subordinates.
The shadow beneath the guard's feet quivered, indicating the readiness of my shadow force to protect.
"Fufufu~ You may do so, Mr. Ash," Princess Ariel responded casually, showing no sign of being offended. "As a member of the royal family, I am very interested in the development of your business, especially the cosmetics that are now popular among the nobility. Not to mention that the slums of the capital, Ars, have become much improved thanks to your efforts."
I nodded, feeling proud yet cautious. "Thank you, Princess Ariel. We at Constantine Group strive to deliver the best, both in terms of products and contributions to the community."
Princess Ariel smiled faintly, continuing, "I have heard many stories about you, Mr. Ash. How you came from outside and quickly transformed everything. Could you tell me how you achieved all this?"
I sighed, reflecting on the long journey I had undertaken. Of course, it was half truth and half fabrication. Seeing Princess Ariel's enthusiastic expression as she listened to my story, she seemed keen on learning leadership from me, but I politely dismissed it.
"Well, enough small talk. Now, Princess, I'm sure you have other needs beyond hearing my story, correct? Please tell me so I can listen," I said bluntly, applying a bit of pressure.
Undeterred, Princess Ariel smiled faintly as she replied, "Certainly, I appreciate your directness. Mr. Ash, you must have your own view on the current Asura nobility, right?"
I gazed sharply into her blue eyes. Of course, I have my opinions on the Asura officials; I must say they are quite negative. Most of them seem more interested in personal gratification than serving the people.
I understand that the background of this world is still in the medieval era. Social morals and ethics have not evolved, and they consider what I find abnormal as normal. As someone with a modern perspective, I am deeply concerned about such a future.
Nevertheless, there are some who are genuinely skilled in politics. Though it is hard for me to admit, the current Prime Minister is very good at his job. Otherwise, why would he be so trusted by the King despite his lolicon fetish?
I continued, "Yes, I have views on the Asura nobility. Many of them seem more focused on personal satisfaction than serving the people. However, I also recognize that some are talented and committed to their duties."
Princess Ariel nodded slowly. "I understand, Mr. Ash. Honestly, my support is currently very weak. Not to mention, my eldest brother, the Crown Prince, who is desperately seeking the throne, is using all means to eliminate his rivals, including myself. Since my birth, there have been many who have wanted my death. Therefore, this is a selfish request, but I hope for some support from you in the upcoming political struggle," she said honestly.
Personally, I did not expect her to be so candid. However, it is unfortunate for her. Still young and facing various dangers, she must mature quickly. Her mature demeanor despite her age reminded me of Aurelia.
They are somewhat similar in character.
"Princess, if it's about politics, you've come to the wrong person. I am just a lowly merchant. I do not possess the power you seek," I said.
Princess Ariel chuckled. "Mr. Ash, I am not blind. Your business growth is so rapid that it accounts for 10% of the kingdom's economic turnover. And you are also a close associate of Philip Boreas Greyrat, which is why the Crown Prince sent a letter to you, right?"
Damn, she is perceptive about my company's developments. This was unexpected based on my predictions.
I took a deep breath before responding. "You're right, Princess Ariel. My company is indeed growing rapidly, and I do have some strong connections. However, I strive not to become too involved in politics. Nevertheless, I cannot simply ignore your request."
Princess Ariel smiled warmly, her eyes showing sincere gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Ash."
I gazed into her hopeful and courageous eyes. "Very well, Princess Ariel. I will see what I can do. However, don't place too many expectations on me," I said firmly.
She nodded gracefully. "That will be sufficient." Then, the princess stood up, ready to leave.
"Ah, Princess, if you are willing, let us welcome you for lunch later? I assure you, our food will delight your taste buds," I said confidently.
"Fufufu~ Thank you for the offer, Mr. Ash," she replied gracefully, though I noticed her hand trembling slightly. Given the numerous threats against her, she seems to be very cautious in her actions.
"Don't worry. If you have any doubts, I can cook the meal myself in front of you," I said, trying to reassure her.
"Eh?" Princess Ariel looked surprised, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Mr. Ash, you will cook yourself?"
"Yes, Princess. I always ensure that special guests receive the best service. And what could be better than a meal cooked directly by the host?" I replied with a reassuring smile.
She smiled back, though her eyes still held some doubt. "In that case, I look forward to your cooking, Mr. Ash."
