Chapter 22: Assassination Attempt
The moon hung low over Qingshan City, its dim glow casting long shadows over the towering apartment complexes. A hush had settled over the city, disturbed only by the occasional distant siren or the whisper of wind through the alleyways.
Tonight, the silence concealed something far deadlier.
Two more assassins had arrived in the city, joining the notorious trio of Crow, Razor, and Vulture. The newcomers were viper and Dagger—lethal specialists who had carried out dozens of high-profile killings across the continent.
Viper was a ghost, his movements silent as death, while Dagger was a relentless force of brutality. With their arrival, the five-man team was complete, and their mission was clear: eliminate Ye Feng.
They spent days studying his patterns, watching his every move. Ye Feng as usual followed his daily routine after eating he went to bedroom for sleeping.
It was the perfect time for the assassins lurking in the shadows.
As the clock struck midnight, the assassins moved into position. Viper, a master of sabotage, cut the power to the building, plunging the entire structure into darkness. Razor, the sharpshooter, stationed himself on a rooftop across the street, his sniper rifle trained on the only viable exit routes.
Vulture and Dagger infiltrated from above, scaling the building with practiced ease, while Crow took the lead in breaching the front. They moved like specters, unseen and unheard, death trailing in their wake.
But Ye Feng was no ordinary target. He had felt the presence of his would-be killers long before they entered. His instincts, honed from years of training, sent a sharp warning through his veins. As the soft creak of an opening window reached his ears, he knew it was time to act.
Viper struck first, his knife slicing through the air in a deadly arc. Ye Feng twisted at the last second, the blade missing his throat by mere inches. In one fluid motion, he grabbed the assassin's arm and twisted, delivering a brutal kick to his ribs. Vulture was sent sprawling, his weapon clattering to the floor.
The room exploded into chaos.
Crow lunged, his concealed blade flashing in the dim light. Ye Feng barely had time to grab a broken chair leg, using it as a makeshift baton to parry the attack. The impact sent Crow staggering back, but the others were already closing in.
Dagger aimed for his blind spot, a short blade seeking flesh. Ye Feng spun on his heel, delivering a bone-crushing elbow strike to Dagger's throat. The assassin choked, momentarily disabled, but the respite was short-lived.
A gunshot rang out.
Ye Feng ducked just in time, Razor's bullet narrowly missing him as it shattered a lamp behind him. The room was plunged into near darkness, only the moonlight illuminating the battlefield.
Phantom moved next, tossing a flashbang into the center of the room. The explosion of light blinded Ye Feng for a fraction of a second, it provided enough time for Vulture to strike. His knife found flesh, cutting deep across Ye Feng's side.
Blood seeped through his clothes, but Ye Feng didn't falter. Gritting his teeth, he seized a metal lamp and swung it with all his strength, the heavy base connecting with Vulture's skull. The sickening crunch echoed in the room as the assassin crumpled lifelessly to the floor.
The remaining killers hesitated, stunned by the brutal efficiency of their target.
Enraged, Crow and Dagger attacked in unison. Ye Feng sidestepped Crow's blade but took a punishing punch from Dagger. His vision swam, pain flaring through his jaw, but he forced himself to stay on his feet.
With a swift knee to Dagger's stomach, he stole the assassin's own knife and drove it into his chest.
Dagger gasped, his eyes wide with shock as life drained from him.
Only three assassins remained.
Ye Feng knew he couldn't last much longer. His wounds were severe, his body growing sluggish. Escape was the only option.
Leaping through the shattered window, he landed on the ground outside his house and sprinted towards the gate. Razor fired another shot, the bullet grazing Ye Feng's shoulder, but he kept moving, ignoring the searing pain.
He reached the street, hotwired a black sedan, and tore off into the night.
Behind him, the assassins gave chase in two vehicles, their headlights slicing through the darkness.
They moved out of the main city while maintaining high speed as a result traffic police officers were alerted.
The narrow mountain road twisted dangerously, the steep drop on one side promising death to any who lost control.
Bullets tore through the air, shattering Ye Feng's rear windshield. He swerved sharply, forcing one of the pursuing cars to skid off the road. The vehicle slammed into the trees, bursting into flames upon impact. Now, only Crow and Razor remained.
Crow's car pulled up beside him, the assassin rolling down his window with a gun aimed directly at Ye Feng's head.
With split-second reflexes, Ye Feng veered into their car, ramming them off balance. Crow cursed, struggling to regain control, while Razor leaned out, firing relentlessly.
A bullet tore through Ye Feng's arms, pain erupting through him. His vision blurred, his grip on the wheel weakening.
The road ahead curved sharply. Beyond it, only open air and the unforgiving rocks below.
Crow made his move, ramming into Ye Feng's car at full speed. Tires screeched as his vehicle spun out of control, the cliff's edge rushing toward him.
Then, the world flipped upside down.
His car tumbled over the edge, metal twisting, glass shattering. It plummeted into the abyss below, engulfed in a fiery explosion upon impact.
Silence.
Crow and Razor stood at the cliff's edge, watching the wreckage burn far below.
"It's over," Razor muttered.
Crow narrowed his eyes. "Not yet. We need to confirm the body."
But deep within the forest, hidden beneath the trees Ye Feng's body which was flung outside during the initial impact of car was falling down slowly through the branches, Ye Feng still clung to life. Broken, bleeding, but alive.
With a thud he fell on the ground facing the sky but it was covered by trees, only small moonlight was passing through them.
