Chapter 10: Going Back
Two days passed in the blink of an eye.
Ye Feng met with his batchmates, his master, and Ning Xiao one last time before his departure. He was ready to begin his new life.
Just like before, a ship was waiting for him. He boarded without hesitation, embarking on a long journey that took thirty days to reach China. He arrived at night, where a car was already waiting to pick him up.
The ride to Qingshan City lasted three days. As the car finally came to a stop, Ye Feng stepped out, his sharp eyes scanning the modest house in front of him. Taking the keys provided by the driver, he unlocked the gate and stepped inside.
The house had two floors, three rooms, a hall, and a kitchen. A small open yard with a patch of grass stretched in front of the entrance. Inside, all the necessities were already prepared—beds, a refrigerator, a television, tables, kitchen essentials, and more.
Ye Feng looked around before heading to the room on the ground floor. It was neither too big nor too small, just the right size. Sitting on the bed, he placed his bag beside him and opened it to check its contents.
Inside the bag were a dagger, a handgun, his identification card, school certificates, a communicator, and a laptop. The laptop required his personal verification to unlock it. If anyone else attempted to open it, all data would automatically be erased. It was a secure device arranged by Zero, meant for communication, mission assignments, and keeping in touch with his future teammates.
Setting the laptop aside, he picked up his school certificates. They confirmed his completion of lower middle school. Now, he needed to enroll in upper middle school to continue his education before advancing to high school.
After a moment of thought, Ye Feng powered on his laptop. Logging into his account, he checked his balance—$1.5 million. After a brief pause, he transferred $500,000 to his Chinese bank account, which amounted to approximately 3.5 million yuan.
Once everything was in order, he carefully organized his belongings before lying down to rest. That night, he slept soundly.
—
The next day, Ye Feng took his bank card and went shopping. He bought an iPhone, a MacBook, and some clothes before taking a cab back home.
That night, he searched the internet for schools in his area. Qingshan High School was the top-ranked institution in the city, and classes for new students were set to begin in ten days. Checking its location, he found that it was about ten kilometers away—manageable. He decided to visit the school the following day to complete his registration.
—
The next morning, Ye Feng took a cab to Qingshan High School. Stepping out, he paid the fare and turned his attention to the large gates in front of him. A board above the entrance displayed the school's name in bold letters—'Qingshan High School.' A security guard in a blue uniform sat near the entrance, watching him closely.
As Ye Feng attempted to pass through, the guard stopped him. "Hey, classes start in nine days. Come back later."
Ye Feng met his gaze calmly. "I'm here for registration."
The guard looked him up and down. He appeared to be around fifteen or sixteen, but if he was here to enroll, why wasn't a guardian accompanying him?
"Where are your parents?" the guard asked.
"I have no parents."
The response made the guard pause, a twinge of guilt flashing across his face. Asking an orphan about their parents was always an awkward mistake. Still, another concern crossed his mind—if this boy had no parents or guardian, how was he planning to pay for his education?
"Are you sure about this?" the guard asked hesitantly.
"I'm pretty sure."
Seeing his confidence, the guard sighed and stepped aside. "Alright, go ahead."
Ye Feng walked through the gate and down the paved road leading to the main school building. Playgrounds stretched on both sides, students practicing sports in small groups. He observed the surroundings before following a sign directing him toward the Director's Office.
After taking a left turn inside the building and then a right at the end of the hallway, he reached a door labeled 'Director's Office.' Knocking twice, he heard a voice from inside.
"Come in."
Pushing the door open, Ye Feng stepped inside. Behind a large wooden desk sat a middle-aged man. A nameplate on the desk read: 'Director Tang Wei.'
Tang Wei glanced up and was momentarily surprised. Admissions were ongoing, but students usually came with their guardians. It was rare to see a student walk in alone.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"I'm Ye Feng. I'm here for registration."
Without further delay, Ye Feng stepped forward and placed his school certificate on the table. Tang Wei raised an eyebrow at the direct approach but picked up the document and examined the details.
As he read through the certificate, he noted that the boy before him was an orphan. His grades till now were good and there was no issue with his identity, after checking everything he placed hid document back on the table. He felt a twinge of sympathy, but this was a private school—the fees were high, there was nothing he could do about this.
"You're aware that our fees aren't low, right? Yet you still want to enroll? Are you sure about this?"
"I'm sure. I'll complete the registration today."
Tang Wei studied his expression, then nodded. "Alright."
He took out a registration form and handed it to Ye Feng. Without hesitation, Ye Feng filled it out and returned it.
"Now, about the fees—"
"I'll pay with my card," Ye Feng interrupted, pulling out his bank card and handing it over.
Tang Wei was taken aback. A young orphan producing a card to pay the school fees? This was certainly a first. However, he proceeded with the transaction. Once the payment was processed, he returned the card to Ye Feng.
Registration was complete.
