CH 11 - The Noble Flower in My Clumsy Writing
Chapter 11
(Part06) The Noble Flower in My Clumsy Writing
How much longer do I have to crawl?
Finally, I start to see the starting point up ahead.
Around the starting area, Instructor Alexa and some trainees are waiting.
They’ve changed their outfits, so it doesn’t look like they’ve been waiting long.
They probably just got the signal from the tracker.
There are 6 hours left.
The bizarre exam, which started around noon and will last until dawn the next day, is finally nearing its end.
The way the trainees are looking at me has changed a lot.
I’m sure word spread quickly among the trainees while I was running like a dog.
Some are amazed at how I managed to do it.
Others probably don’t understand why I’m putting myself through this just to join the military faster.
I arrived at the starting line, panting, and dramatically collapsed in front of Instructor Alexa.
“Ugh, I’m gonna die.”
“Good job, trainee. Excellent. Now get up. I’ll take you through the formal enlistment procedure.”
“I’m sorry….”
My body just wouldn’t listen.
My heart is saying “I like you”, but…
My body just wouldn’t cooperate, as if it wasn’t even mine.
“I’ll help you up, Instructor.”
“Oh, would you?”
Someone grabbed my arm and slipped under it.
I was wondering who would do something so gross, but it was him.
The main character.
“Hah, you’re heavy. You’ve been working out, huh?”
The one joking around with a silly laugh was Hugo Elclair.
The protagonist of the fanfiction.
This world is based on a twisted setting where the original game’s protagonist, Ras, never wakes up.
A human was chosen to become the next divine covenant, a power passed on by the goddess, who had no strength left to awaken the original contract, in order to prevent the world’s destruction.
This person enters the military academy with the mission of saving the world, equipped with the unique ability [Successor of the Covenant] to glimpse into future events.
The reason I didn’t use the original game’s protagonist and instead inserted my own self-insert character and heroines is simple.
Even though it’s a fanfic based on a game novel, I didn’t want to use characters that others loved as just fuel for my own desires.
It was a form of obsession, a kind of respect and consideration for the original work.
Because of that, I got a lot of criticism for making this into an epic fanfic, but as more original characters started appearing with my entry into the military academy, the readers’ complaints softened.
Now, my gaze shifted back to the protagonist, who still had a tough road ahead.
By the way, the protagonist is a talent machine.
His nickname among his friends is “Dumb Hugo.”
He’s a simple, stubborn idealist who can’t stand injustice and always causes trouble, which is why they call him that.
Even in a situation where he’s drenched in sweat, the fact that he’s smiling brightly while helping me up shows just how true to his character he is.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it. By the way, you’re amazing.”
Hugo said, impressed.
“Honestly, when Instructor Alexa told me about you, I thought it was an unreasonable, ridiculous story.”
“Isn’t it unreasonable that I joined the training camp halfway through?”
“Yeah. I mean, even though you missed out on previous training, any young soldier can join whenever, right? But demanding something so unreasonable as part of a test is wrong.”
“It was a dog’s life, yeah.”
“But in that sense, you’re amazing. I’m impressed.”
Hugo smiled brightly after saying that.
Of course, seeing the big guy grin like that didn’t make me feel any better, but it was still good to have made a decent first impression with the protagonist.
“Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I’m still here, you know. Trainees.”
“Ah, sorry.”
“It’s not wrong, but be careful. The trainees in this class really make me feel like they’re just lost kids.”
Instructor Alexa said with a kind smile before adding more details.
“Russell, your dorm is in Building 3, Room 9. I’ve already instructed a trainee to bring your supplies, so please shower and change into your uniform. You can join the training from tomorrow.”
“Ah… thank you.”
“You’ll hear more details from your fellow trainees. Good luck, Russell. See you at training, looking strong.”
Instructor Alexa accepted Hugo’s salute and turned around to leave.
For some reason, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
She’s pretty, alright.
“Instructor, take me!”
“I’ll save you!”
At that moment, the door to the instructor’s office opened and closed, and I caught a glimpse of Crick’s eyes watching me.
But before the door fully shut, Konrad didn’t even look my way.
“Not saving you.”
So, with Hugo’s help, I finally made it to the dorm.
Even though the facilities were clean, the smell of military barracks was thick, and with a sense of relief that I had passed the first hurdle, I couldn’t help but feel disgusted to be back in the military.
Damn it. I should’ve just written some academy story instead of throwing in military training camp settings…
It’s hard to explain how uncomfortable I feel.
Of course, the facilities are ridiculously nice.
***
This world is a weird mix of medieval and modern tech, kind of like a stew of random stuff, but the spacious dorms with training equipment in each room? That was a total shocker.
Back in my day, we didn’t even have beds, just the hard ground where 10 or 12 of us crammed together to sleep. Yeah, that’s right!
“I’m in Dorm 6, right next to you. If you need anything, come find me. Rest up and I’ll see you tomorrow, Russell!”
I waved half-heartedly at our overly enthusiastic protagonist and headed into the dorm.
The dorm was huge, probably about 20 pyeong (roughly 66 square meters).
Four beds was close to the room’s boundaries, and training statues, frightened creatures and other physical training equipment were displayed along the window. The training centre clearly emphasised skill development..
Then, I noticed the three roommates sprawled out on their beds.
I activated [Insight] and checked their status screens.
Starting from week 3, the training camp includes both personal and team evaluations.
This means these guys, like it or not, are the dead weight I’ll be carrying with me.
The first goal is to earn a spot in the military academy.
Even though it’s graded on an absolute scale, only about 100 out of 1,000 trainees usually get in.
But that’s not just for one academy year.
The trainees from the five academies across the continent gather for the final selection.
The second goal is to get in as either the top student, second, or at least an excellent student.
The cutoff point is rank 5.
The main characters in this year’s class number 7, so that means I’ll have to outdo at least 3 talented, overpowered characters.
Let’s take a look at these guys, shall we?
I shifted my gaze toward my roommates.
“So you’re the transfer student who just joined? Welcome!”
“Yeah, I’m Russell.”
The boy greeting me brightly with a handshake was Corey.
[Title]
Youngest Son of the Afih Family
[Ability]
Golden Hand (C) (Exclusive): ★☆☆
Youngest son of the Afih family? What’s that supposed to mean? He’s not someone from affulent family.
The Afih family is a pretty influential traders, so that could be useful for future connections, but it didn’t seem like he had any real power right now.
He didn’t seem to have any standout skills either, and his body was so skinny that I was wondering how he passed the physical training.
“Dead weight level 1.”
I was sure of it.
His exclusive ability was C-rank “Golden Hand.”
It’s a non-fightning skill.
“I heard the training camp was buzzing because of you. You’re a huge star!” Corey said, smiling, showing off his outgoing personality, just like a true trader.
“This is Usherus. Say hi.”
Corey pointed to the other guy—Usherus.
He had no title, no special abilities—just an average guy, though he was pretty big.
“Don’t worry about him. He’s a gentle guy, just doesn’t talk much. Apparently, he’s self-conscious about his voice, so he rarely speaks.”
Compared to other guys his age, Usherus was huge, with a muscular build and skin tanned from the sun.
“Really? What, did you come from farming or something?”
Usherus nodded.
So this guy’s tough because of real-life farming work, huh?
“Meat shield level 1.”
“A farmer and a trader, huh? This is a disaster. Did they purposely throw these guys in here?”
I couldn’t help but think that.
Then, when I looked at the last guy, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes.
‘…??’
[Name]
Ludwig
[Gender]
Male
[Age]
???
[Occupation]
Mage
[Combat Stats]
290
[Title]
1. Last Night’s Clan
2. Full Moon Gravekeeper
[Abilities]
Ruler of the Night (A) (Exclusive): ★★☆☆☆
Summon of the Full Moon (A) (Exclusive): ★☆☆☆☆
Moonlight Strike (C): ★☆☆
Starlight Strike (C): ★☆☆
Levitation (C): ★☆☆
Wait a second… What trainee has 290 combat stats?!
And why is “he” here?
I was so confused I thought I’d been hit by a stun spell.
The kid standing in front of me looked like he could be an elementary schooler—he had purple hair, purple eyes.
The problem wasn’t his appearance, though.
Ludwig wasn’t supposed to be here. According to the story, he doesn’t show up until much later, and when he does, he’s just a minor named character.
So what’s he doing here, in the middle of the protagonist’s class, as a trainee?!
“What are you staring at?”
And to top it off, he said that in a rude tone, using formal speech.
“Why are you here?”
“…? Who are you to ask?”
“You’re—”
I stopped myself mid-sentence and took a moment to think.
Did he know he was from the Last Night’s Clan, or was he hiding it while he was here?
Either way, this kid was an irregular.
I didn’t know how this would affect the story, so I had to be cautious.
Suddenly, I activated the [Developer’s Notes] ability.
***
Change Log: It was decided that the Last Night’s Clan member Ludwig would not be excluded from the final war, and his absence was considered a setting error.
Instead, Ludwig has now been inserted into the protagonist’s class for some unknown purpose.
—
“So that’s how it is.”
I nodded, realizing how I could use this ability for the first time.
But is it okay to mess with the original setting this much?
—
Ludwig from the Last Night’s Clan.
A being who has watched the birth of the world and is destined to witness its end.
Twenty years ago, during the Demon War, all his clan members, except him, fought and died, leaving him as the sole survivor.
The Last Night’s Clan.
—
I found it hard to hide my emotions.
Knowing Ludwig’s background and situation made it hard not to feel for him.
He hated humans and blamed the Queen of Ijera, who led his entire clan to their deaths.
What was he thinking, standing here now? What brought him to this place?
“Russell trainee, your supplies are by the door.”
Just then, a voice from outside the door interrupted me.
I turned around briefly and waved it off.
“No, wait, I must’ve seen someone wrong.”
I decided to retreat for now.
I’ll keep an eye on the situation.
