Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Pack's Embrace
The colossal door to the second floor of The Lumien's Sanctuary swung inward, revealing a cavern bathed in a soft, ethereal glow. Unlike the stark, unlit chamber of the first floor, this space was illuminated by countless mana stones embedded in the ceiling and walls, casting a shimmering, otherworldly light. The air was cool, fresh, and hummed with a palpable density of mana, far richer than anything they had experienced before. It felt like stepping into a living, breathing jewel.
A newfound confidence radiated from the group. Rohan flexed his enhanced arms, a grin splitting his face. Kira moved with a subtle, almost imperceptible grace, her eyes constantly scanning the shadows. Seraphina's presence was a calming balm, her aura of Life Affinity more vibrant. Aryan, though quiet, held himself with a new certainty, his Aether Gaze already subtly active, perceiving the mana currents of their new environment. Even Lysander, usually aloof, had a spring in his step, his Grade 3 technique already making him feel invincible.
Orion, however, felt a familiar knot of apprehension. He was still F-rank, Tier 1. His 'Primordial Tether' remained uncultivated, a tantalizing promise he couldn't grasp. He was the only one whose stats hadn't soared, whose abilities hadn't expanded. He was the weakest link, and the knowledge weighed heavily on him. He clutched the hilt of his 'Unbound Blade', its potential still limited by his own.
"Alright, everyone," Lysander announced, his voice echoing slightly in the vast space. "Aryan, lead the way. Kira, scout ahead, but don't engage without my command. Rohan, Seraphina, stay close to the rear. Orion… try to keep up." His last words were a casual dismissal, but they stung.
They moved forward, their footsteps surprisingly soft on the smooth cavern floor. The second floor was a labyrinth of winding passages and vast, echoing chambers, all illuminated by the soft glow of the mana stones. The air was alive with the faint rustle of unseen creatures, the distant drip of water, and the constant, invigorating hum of mana.
Suddenly, Aryan froze. His Aether Gaze flared, a sharp, sapphire glow in his eyes. He pointed to a shadowy alcove ahead. "Movement. Single target. Fast."
"F-rank beast?" Rohan muttered, already cracking his knuckles.
Orion, feeling a familiar surge of inadequacy, activated his Dungeon Core Mark. He focused mana into the runic tattoo, and a spectral screen shimmered into existence before his eyes, displaying the creature Aryan had detected.

A Cave Stalker. A common F-rank beast, known for its swift, silent movements and sharp claws, but lacking any magical abilities. This was a perfect test for their new powers.
"Just a Cave Stalker," Orion announced, his voice a little steadier than he felt. "No magic. High agility, strong physical attacks."
"Perfect," Lysander smirked, already moving. "Rohan, you're up. Let's see that 'Stone Heart Sutra' in action."
Rohan grinned, his eyes alight. He charged, his body radiating a faint earthy glow. The Cave Stalker, a lean, wolf-like creature with dull grey fur, sprang from its hiding spot, claws extended. It launched itself at Rohan, claws extended.
"Terra Fist!" Rohan roared, his hand glowing with dark brown mana. He met the pouncing beast head-on, his punch imbued with the raw power of his Tier 3 technique. The impact was a sickening crunch, sending the Cave Stalker flying into the cavern wall with a wet thud. It crumpled, unmoving.
"One hit!" Rohan cheered, flexing his fist. "This is incredible!"
The others cheered too, their faces beaming with the thrill of their newfound power. Orion offered a weak smile, a hollow ache in his chest. He was glad for Rohan, truly, but he felt like a spectator, watching others wield the power he so desperately craved.
They continued deeper into the second floor, the passages becoming more complex, the mana stones glowing brighter. The air grew heavier, hinting at something more significant ahead. Aryan's Aether Gaze was constantly active, his eyes scanning every shadow, every crack in the stone.
"Hold!" Aryan whispered, his voice sharp, pulling them to an abrupt halt. His eyes glowed intensely, tracing a complex web of mana signatures ahead. "Multiple targets. Fast. Very fast. And… they're coordinating."
Orion's spectral screen immediately flared, displaying the new threat.

A pack. Eight of them. This was a different challenge entirely.
"Eight Cave Stalkers," Orion relayed, his voice tight. "No magic, but they use pack tactics. High agility."
"Eight?" Seraphina whispered, her hand instinctively going to Misty, who stirred in her pouch.
"Excellent!" Lysander's eyes gleamed, a predatory glint in their depths. "A true test. Rohan, front. Kira, flanks. Seraphina, keep us patched up. Aryan, call out their movements. Orion… try to stay out of the way."
Before Lysander could finish, the Cave Stalkers launched their assault. They burst from the shadows, a blur of grey fur and gleaming claws, attacking from multiple directions. The cavern erupted into a chaotic symphony of snarls, impacts, and the flash of mana.
Rohan roared, slamming his 'Stone Guard Sphere' into the ground. "Earthen Guard!" A shimmering, translucent shield of hardened earth erupted from the floor, blocking the charge of two Stalkers, absorbing their initial impact. He then spun, his Terra Fist glowing, smashing one of the beasts with a bone-shattering blow. Its body crumpled. He activated 'Earth's Resilience', and a stony aura briefly enveloped him, making him a formidable bulwark.
Kira was a whirlwind of motion. Her Mist Step allowed her to vanish and reappear, darting between the lunging Stalkers. She was almost impossible to pin down. "Wind Blade!" she hissed, and a sharp, invisible arc of wind sliced through the air, carving a deep gash across a Stalker's flank. The beast yelped, momentarily disoriented. She activated 'Zephyr Dash', and for a split second, she was a mere afterimage, striking with blinding speed.
Lysander was a dark, elegant dance of death. He used Shadow Veil to teleport behind a Stalker, appearing as if from nowhere. "Shadow Strike!" His 'Shadow Weaver's Edge', wreathed in black energy, plunged into the beast's neck. It shuddered and fell. He then unleashed Dark Shroud, a localized wave of oppressive shadow that disoriented three more Stalkers, making them stumble and snarl in confusion. He moved with a cold, precise efficiency, his Tier 3 spells devastatingly effective. He activated 'Umbral Augment', and his sword pulsed with a deep, hungry shadow, making his strikes even more potent.
Seraphina, her face a mask of intense concentration, was a beacon of calm in the chaos. Rohan took a deep claw rake to his arm, the furrows bleeding freely. "Life Bloom!" Seraphina chanted, a gentle green light enveloping Rohan's wound, closing the gash with surprising speed. A Stalker lunged at Kira, who barely dodged. Seraphina extended her hand, a faint green light reaching out. "Touch of Life!" The light connected, and Kira's minor scrapes vanished. Seraphina then focused on a particularly aggressive Stalker, its eyes fixed on Rohan. "Verdant Whisper!" she murmured, and a subtle wave of calming energy washed over the beast. It paused, its snarl turning into a confused whimper, its predatory focus momentarily broken. Her mana points, greatly increased by her technique, allowed her to sustain this rapid-fire support. She activated 'Life Surge', and a wave of invigorating mana washed over her, allowing her to rapidly cast multiple healing and supportive spells.
Aryan was their eyes and ears. His Mana Sense constantly fed him information on the Stalkers' positions, even when they moved silently. "Left flank! Two coming!" he'd shout. "Pack leader, the one with the scarred ear, aiming for Lysander!" His Echo Trace allowed him to predict a Stalker's pouncing trajectory, giving Kira a split-second warning. He fought with his 'Aether Blade', his movements fluid and precise, finding the gaps in the Stalkers' attacks. He activated 'Mana Projection', and a shimmering beam of light shot from his sword, striking a distant Stalker, forcing it to retreat. But his lack of defensive magic meant he relied entirely on his agility to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Orion, however, was struggling. He tried to engage, swinging his 'Unbound Blade', but the Stalkers were too fast, too agile. His physical attacks, while stronger than a normal F-rank, were simply not enough against these Tier 3 enhanced creatures. He landed a solid punch on one, but it merely staggered, then lunged back, its claws raking across his side. He cried out, stumbling backward, the pain a sharp, burning line.
A Stalker, seeing his vulnerability, broke from the main fight and charged him. Orion tried to dodge, but his injured arm hampered his movement. He tripped over a loose rock, falling hard. The Stalker was on him in an instant, its jaws snapping at his throat.
"Orion!" Rohan roared, seeing his friend in peril. He abandoned his current fight, slamming his 'Stone Guard Sphere' into the ground. "Earthen Guard!" A small, temporary shield erupted, just enough to deflect the Stalker's attack, giving Orion a precious second.
Kira, a blur of motion, used her Mist Step to dart between Orion and the Stalker, a Wind Blade slicing across its eyes, momentarily blinding it. "Get up, Orion!" she yelled.
Orion scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering, the taste of fear in his mouth. He felt a burning shame. He was supposed to be strong. He was supposed to protect them. Instead, he was a liability, constantly needing to be saved. He was the weakest, the one who couldn't contribute meaningfully in a fight where his friends were excelling. He felt the vast chasm between his F-rank, Tier 1 status and their newly acquired Tier 3 power.
The battle raged for several more minutes, a testament to their combined strength and teamwork. Lysander's relentless attacks, Rohan's steadfast defense, Kira's evasive strikes, Seraphina's vital healing and subtle crowd control, and Aryan's unerring guidance. They fought as a cohesive unit, a well-oiled machine, each member playing their crucial part.
Finally, with a last, desperate Shadow Strike from Lysander that shattered the pack leader's skull, the remaining Cave Stalkers scattered, fleeing deeper into the dungeon's shadows. The cavern fell silent once more, save for their heavy breathing.
They were exhausted, bruised, but triumphant. Rohan nursed a scraped arm, Kira had a few minor cuts, and even Lysander had a faint bruise on his cheek. But they were alive. And they had won.
Orion, however, felt no triumph. He stood apart, his side aching, his mana core still stubbornly F-rank, Tier 1. He was lucky to be alive, lucky to have friends who were powerful enough to carry his weight. He looked at his uncultivated 'Primordial Tether' tattoo, a symbol of a power he couldn't access, a constant reminder of his current inadequacy. He had to find a Dungeon Core. He had to unlock his true potential. He couldn't be the weakest link forever. The next floor would surely hold even greater challenges, and he couldn't keep relying on his friends to pull him from the brink.
