Why do you do the things you do? Why do you give flowers to your mother, compliment your girlfriend, or even risk getting into some kind of trouble to connect with someone?

We humans, we strive to be accepted. We live our lives for other people, finding pleasure in the acceptance that other people may have for you. Or perhaps the discomfort when you realize that they don’t. We don’t think much about why we’re doing it. It is in our very nature, after all. Ingrained into our mental function from centuries of experience.

Felix Barron was no different.

All his life, he lived for others. More specifically, his father. Felix was rejected and shunned by society ever since he was a young boy. He was too serious for them, too cold. However, Felix did not mind. He had his father.

Felix worshiped his father. His father was Felix’s mentor, leader, and protector. Whenever any bad things happened, no matter how big or small, his father was always there, comforting him. He was Felix’s pillar of strength. And so, whenever his father asked Felix to do something, Felix would do so without hesitation. No matter how gruesome or ugly the act was, Felix would obediently do it.

Felix believed that his father loved him. He thought that no matter how much the world turned its back to him, his father would always be there. And so, with this belief nestled comfortably in his heart, Felix kept up with his father’s demands. Even as the demands began to become more twisted and disturbing, Felix kept his heart steady.

But then his father betrayed him as well. Felix was cast aside like a broken toy, no longer of any use. Thanks to Felix’s help the father had grown rich and powerful. But he soon saw that his son was now useless. Felix could simply not fulfill the demands anymore. They had grown far past what a 17 year old boy could do. And so, Felix was left for dead.

And soon, Felix Barron died.

But what happened after wasn’t something at all close to what Felix had been expecting.

There was no oblivion, no God stretching his hand towards him, and not even the fiery blaze of Hell.

Instead, Felix was reborn.
