Chapter 39: Chapter 38 : Whispers of Eternal Spiree
The next morning, the group woke early, the night's uneasy rest doing little to alleviate their fatigue. The shard's soft glow persisted, its steady rhythm a reminder of the Warden's message.
As the sun broke over the horizon, Tarezuchi addressed the group, his expression firm. "The Eternal Spire is our next destination. If the shard can be harmonized there, we might gain the strength we need to push back the darkness."
"Assuming we survive the journey," Ryomi said, adjusting her gauntlets. "Any idea where this Spire is?"
Tarezuchi glanced at the shard, then back at his companions. "The Warden didn't say, but the shard might guide us, like the pendant did before."
"That's a lot of trust to place in a glowing rock," Akiyo muttered, hefting his warhammer onto his shoulder.
Kaida gave him a sidelong glance. "Do you have a better idea?"
"Yeah," Akiyo shot back. "Don't die."
---
The group resumed their journey, the shard's faint pulsing acting as a compass. The barren landscape began to change, giving way to rolling hills dotted with sparse patches of greenery. The air felt heavier, charged with an unfamiliar energy.
"It's like the land knows where we're going," Rina remarked, her light magic flickering faintly around her fingertips.
"Or something else does," Kota said, his eyes scanning the horizon. His bow remained in hand, an arrow notched but undrawn.
---
As they traveled, the shard's glow brightened, and Tarezuchi felt an invisible pull, like a string guiding him forward. It wasn't long before they reached a dense forest, its towering trees casting long shadows that swallowed the sunlight.
"This must be the Verdant Veil," Kaida said, his swords shifting slightly in his grip. "The Eternal Spire is rumored to lie beyond it."
"Rumors are great," Akiyo said, "but they don't tell us what's waiting inside."
Ryomi's eyes narrowed as she stepped closer to the forest's edge. "We'll find out soon enough."
---
The forest was unlike any they had encountered before. The air was thick with an otherworldly energy, and the trees seemed alive, their gnarled branches twisting toward the group as if watching their every move.
"This place is unsettling," Rina murmured, her voice barely audible.
Kota nodded. "Stay sharp. The trees aren't the only things watching us."
As if to punctuate his words, a low growl echoed through the forest.
The group froze, weapons drawn, as shadowy shapes emerged from the underbrush. They were beasts unlike any they had seen—massive, with fur that shimmered like liquid shadow and eyes that burned with an eerie crimson light.
"Looks like the welcoming party," Akiyo said, gripping his warhammer tightly.
Tarezuchi stepped forward, the shard in his hand glowing brighter. "Stay together. These things are drawn to the shard, but we can use its light against them."
---
The battle was fierce. The beasts moved with unnatural speed, their forms flickering in and out of sight as they attacked.
Tarezuchi channeled the shard's energy, creating bursts of light that repelled the creatures but drained him with each use. "They're strong," he said through gritted teeth, "but they can't withstand the light!"
Rina stepped forward, her light magic flaring brilliantly. "I've got this!" She released a wave of energy that illuminated the forest, forcing the beasts to retreat momentarily.
Kaida took advantage of the opening, his swords cutting through one of the creatures with precision. "Keep the pressure on!"
Akiyo let out a battle cry as he slammed his warhammer into the ground, creating a shockwave that scattered the beasts. "That's right, run!"
Ryomi and Kota worked in tandem, her gauntlets delivering powerful blows while his arrows struck true, each attack weakening the creatures further.
---
As the last of the beasts dissipated into shadow, the group regrouped, their breaths heavy.
"They just keep getting tougher," Akiyo said, leaning on his warhammer.
"We're getting stronger," Rina countered, her light magic fading as she lowered her hands.
Tarezuchi studied the shard, its glow now faint but steady. "We need to keep moving. The shard is leading us, and we can't waste time."
---
The forest grew denser as they pressed on, the air heavier with each step. The shard's light pulsed faster, as though reacting to something ahead.
Finally, they emerged into a clearing, where a massive stone gateway stood. Intricate carvings covered its surface, and ancient runes glowed faintly in the dim light. Beyond the gateway, a towering structure loomed—the Eternal Spire.
"We made it," Kaida said, his voice tinged with awe.
"Not yet," Ryomi said, pointing to the base of the Spire. A figure cloaked in dark energy stood before it, its presence radiating malice.
Tarezuchi's grip tightened on the shard. "Another guardian?"
The figure stepped forward, its voice a chilling echo. "I am no guardian. I am a harbinger. You should not have come here."
The group readied their weapons, the air around them crackling with tension.
"Guess we'll have to disagree," Akiyo said, his warhammer glowing faintly as he prepared for battle.
The harbinger's energy flared, and the ground beneath them trembled. "Then prove yourselves, mortals. Show me you are worthy of the Spire's secrets—or perish."
---
As the harbinger advanced, Tarezuchi raised the shard, its light brightening in response.
"This is what we came for," he said, his voice steady. "Let's end this."
The battle for the Eternal Spire had begun.
