Chapter 27: The Trap Is Sprung

The revelation of Wells as Eobard Thawne had ripped through Team Flash like a Category 5 hurricane. The air in S.T.A.R. Labs was thick with anger, betrayal, and a desperate need for revenge. But revenge wasn't a plan. Trapping a speedster who could manipulate time and space? That required cunning. And a lot of my meta-knowledge.

"Okay, Adam. Time to play chess with the grandmaster of manipulation. And this time, I'm not just a pawn. I'm a very, very annoying knight. And I know all his moves. Mostly. Just gotta make sure he doesn't see me coming. Or, you know, vibrate through my chest." My internal monologue was a mix of grim determination and sheer terror.

"We need to trap him," Barry declared, his voice raw with fury. "He's too dangerous to be out there."

"But how?" Caitlin whispered, her eyes still red from crying. "He's faster than you, Barry. And he knows this lab better than anyone."

"He knows this lab," I said, stepping forward. "But he doesn't know everything. He's arrogant. He thinks he's always one step ahead. We can use that. We need a trap he won't see coming. Something that exploits his overconfidence." I looked at Cisco. "Cisco, that force field you designed for the Time Vault… can it be modified? To contain a speedster? Permanently?"

Cisco, still reeling from the betrayal, nodded, his jaw tight. "Yeah. Yeah, I think so. A full-spectrum energy dampener. But it'll take time."

"We don't have time," Joe said grimly. "He's going to come for us. He knows we know."

"He'll come for Barry," I corrected. "He needs Barry for his plan. And he'll come for Gideon. He won't want us to have access to future intel. We need to make sure we get that data before he destroys it." I subtly nudged Cisco. "That data chip from Gideon… the one with all the future information. It's crucial. Maybe you should… make a copy. Just in case."

Cisco, intrigued, immediately started working on a way to extract Gideon's core data. Wells, or rather, Thawne, was already on the move, trying to erase his tracks.

The trap was set in the Time Vault, a place of so much betrayal. The air was thick with tension as we waited. Barry, Joe, Cisco, Caitlin, and me. Caitlin gripped my hand, her knuckles white. I squeezed back, trying to offer reassurance I didn't entirely feel.

Then, he came. A yellow blur, faster than thought, materializing in the Time Vault. Eobard Thawne. His face was a mask of cold fury, his eyes burning with malice.

"You think you can trap me?" Thawne sneered, his voice vibrating with power. "You think you're smart enough?"

"We know who you are, Thawne," Barry snarled, his eyes blazing.

Thawne laughed, a chilling, guttural sound. "And now you die." He lunged, a yellow streak aimed directly at Barry.

But the trap worked. Cisco activated the force field, and Thawne slammed into it, a crackle of lightning erupting around him. He roared in frustration, trapped.

"Impossible!" Thawne snarled, slamming his fist against the force field.

"Nothing's impossible when you've got a genius like Cisco," I muttered, my voice tight.

Thawne's eyes, filled with a terrifying rage, swept over us. They landed on the console where Cisco was working, specifically on the data chip he was trying to extract from Gideon. Thawne knew what it contained. He knew it was his undoing. With a desperate snarl, he vibrated his hand, attempting to phase through the force field, aiming to obliterate the data.

"NO! Not that data! Not the future! Not on my watch!"

My body moved before my brain could even register the thought. Pure, unadulterated instinct.

[IMMINENT THREAT DETECTED. HIGH-SPEED DATA DESTRUCTION. INSUFFICIENT VELOCITY.]

[ADAPTATION: ACTIVATION. ENHANCED SPEED. DOUBLING THREAT'S VELOCITY. ACTIVE.]

A blinding flash of light, a surge of power that made every cell in my body sing with an impossible energy. The world around me slowed to an absolute crawl. Thawne, a yellow blur, seemed to be moving in agonizing slow motion, his hand reaching for the data chip. I was faster. Impossibly faster.

"Holy. Crap. I'm moving at light speed again. This is insane. This is terrifying. But I need that data. I need it to save them. To save the future."

In that impossible fraction of a second, I lunged. A grey blur, faster than the yellow. My hand shot out, snatching the small data chip from the console just as Thawne's vibrating hand phased through the force field, obliterating the console itself. I zipped back, collapsing from the strain, the chip clutched tightly in my hand.

[ADAPT SYSTEM: DEACTIVATED. EXTREME STAMINA DRAIN. RECOVERY INITIATED.]

The speed vanished, leaving me utterly, profoundly spent. The world snapped back to normal speed, and the overwhelming exhaustion hit me like a physical blow. My legs gave out, and I crumpled to the floor, gasping for air, my body trembling uncontrollably.

Thawne, trapped in the force field, stared at me, his eyes wide with a chilling mixture of fury and profound shock. He saw the data chip in my hand. He knew what I had done.

"What… what are you?!" Thawne roared, his voice filled with a terrifying, frustrated disbelief. "You… you moved faster than me! You are a variable! An anomaly I cannot account for!"

Caitlin rushed to my side, her face pale with terror and awe. "Adam! You… you moved so fast! And you got the chip! How?!"

I just held up the chip, a weak, triumphant grin on my face. "Just… really, really good at grabbing things. And apparently, really, really good at annoying evil speedsters."

Thawne slammed his fist against the force field again, his eyes burning into mine. He knew. He knew I was a threat. And that, more than any physical blow, was a terrifying realization.
