Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Man in the Yellow Suit
Chapter 15: The Man in the Yellow Suit
The air in S.T.A.R. Labs was thick with anticipation, a palpable tension that hummed beneath the surface. The Reverse-Flash. The man in the yellow suit. The speedster who murdered Barry's mother. And, unbeknownst to everyone but me, the man who was currently in the room with us, masquerading as Dr. Harrison Wells.
"This is it. The big one. The original speed demon. The architect of all this misery. Don't screw this up, Adam. Cisco's life depends on it. And probably Barry's sanity. And my own, for that matter." My internal monologue was a frantic, anxious mess. I felt a cold knot of dread in my stomach.
Joe West had finally pieced together the clues, confirming his suspicions about Wells. Cisco, with his brilliant mind, was unknowingly building the very device that would expose Thawne: the force field that would trap him in the Time Vault. I had to be careful, subtly nudging Cisco without revealing too much, without tipping off Wells.
"Cisco," I said, peering over his shoulder as he worked on the force field schematics. "Are you sure this force field is… foolproof? What if there's a back door? A fail-safe? What if someone could… vibrate through it?" I tried to sound casual, just a curious observer.
Cisco frowned. "Vibrate through it? Nah, this thing's designed to contain anything. Even a speedster. It's a full-spectrum energy dampener."
"Just a thought," I shrugged. "You know, always good to double-check the fine print when you're dealing with a super-villain. Especially one who can run really, really fast."
Wells, who had been observing our conversation from his wheelchair, gave a subtle, almost imperceptible, twitch of his lips. He knew I was hinting at something. He just didn't know how I knew.
The plan was set. Trap the Reverse-Flash in the Time Vault. Confront him. Get answers. It was a suicide mission, and my gut was screaming at me to run. But I couldn't. Not when my friends were walking into a lion's den.
The confrontation was brutal. Barry, full of righteous fury, confronted Wells. And then, the reveal. The voice modulator. The yellow suit. Eobard Thawne. The air crackled with raw, unbridled power.
Thawne, now unmasked, moved in a terrifying blur, a yellow streak of pure vengeance. He was faster, stronger, more ruthless than anything Barry had faced. He moved to attack Barry, then, with a chilling smirk, he turned his attention to Cisco, lunging at him, his hand vibrating, ready to phase through his chest.
"NO! Not again! Not on my watch!"
My body reacted before my brain could even process the thought. Pure, unadulterated instinct.
[IMMINENT THREAT DETECTED. HIGH-SPEED KINETIC FORCE. INSUFFICIENT VELOCITY.]
[ADAPTATION: CRITICAL ACTIVATION. ENHANCED SPEED. DOUBLING THREAT'S VELOCITY. ACTIVE.]
A blinding flash of light, a surge of power that made every cell in my body sing with an impossible energy. The world around me slowed to an absolute crawl. Thawne, a yellow blur, seemed to be moving in agonizing slow motion. I was faster. Impossibly faster.
"Holy. Crap. I'm moving at light speed. This is insane. This is terrifying. This is… awesome. Okay, Adam, focus. Save Cisco. Don't get yourself erased from existence by a paradox."
In that impossible fraction of a second, I moved. A grey blur, faster than the yellow. I lunged, shoving Cisco out of the way with a super-speed shove that sent him sprawling, safe. Then, fueled by a desperate, primal rage, I turned on Thawne. I wasn't thinking; I was reacting. I threw a super-speed punch, a glancing blow that connected with his jaw. It wasn't enough to hurt him, but it was enough to surprise him. He staggered back, a flicker of genuine shock on his face.
"What?!" Thawne roared, his voice distorted, slowed down by my perception. "What are you?!"
My speed was a whirlwind, a chaotic dance around him. I dodged his retaliatory blows, a grey blur weaving through the yellow. I wasn't fighting to win; I was fighting to distract, to buy time. I landed another glancing blow, then another, a desperate, impossible flurry of super-speed punches.
This was the most terrifying, exhilarating, and utterly draining display of my powers yet. I was a human lightning bolt, challenging the man who was supposed to be the fastest.
[ADAPT SYSTEM: DEACTIVATED. EXTREME STAMINA DRAIN. SEVERE PHYSICAL STRAIN. RECOVERY INITIATED.]
The speed vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving me utterly, profoundly spent. The world snapped back to normal speed, and the overwhelming exhaustion hit me like a physical blow. My legs gave out, and I crumpled to the floor, gasping for air, my body trembling uncontrollably, every muscle screaming.
Thawne, now recovered from his brief shock, looked at me with an intense, calculating gaze. His eyes, cold and analytical, bore into mine. "An anomaly," he hissed, his voice filled with a chilling curiosity. "You are not a speedster. Yet you moved with impossible speed. You are… a variable. One I cannot account for."
He didn't move to attack me again. He was too busy processing. Too busy analyzing. And that was my saving grace.
Barry, meanwhile, had recovered, his face a mask of shock and fury. He launched himself at Thawne, the fight resuming with renewed intensity.
Caitlin was by my side in an instant, her face pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. She immediately began scanning me, her hands shaking. "Adam! Oh my God! You were… you were so fast! Faster than Barry! How?!"
"Just… really, really didn't want Cisco to die," I wheezed, trying to force a smile, but it came out as a pained grimace. "And… turns out, I'm really good at running away. From death. And from super-villains."
She ignored my sarcasm, her eyes filled with tears, her voice raw with emotion. "Adam… what are you? What is happening to you? I… I can't lose you. I can't." She pulled me into a tight hug, her body trembling.
I hugged her back, burying my face in her shoulder, the scent of her hair a comforting anchor in the chaos. This is it. She knows. Or at least, she knows enough. Time to be honest. Or as honest as I can be without sounding like a crazy person.
"I don't know, Caitlin," I whispered, my voice hoarse. "But… I promise you. I'm not going anywhere. Not if I can help it."
The fight between Barry and Thawne raged on, but for a moment, in Caitlin's arms, the world narrowed to just us. The secret was out. Or at least, a big chunk of it. And our relationship, forged in the fires of metahuman chaos and impossible powers, had just been pushed to a terrifying, exhilarating new level.
