chapter 27
27 – 27. Evening Shift Begins (3)
After the anger management-disordered little brat elf was taken away, the convenience store fell silent.
[Elf (Cosmos-1221)]
[Overview: Elves are intelligent beings that existed in the era before humans appeared, similar to angels, demons, and dwarves, living in the forest.]
[Characteristics: Elves are forest-dwelling fairies with pointed ears and small physiques. They prefer a vegetarian diet but occasionally eat fish or insects. Except for a few rare elves, most of them are social misfits.]
Indeed, the information provided on Tree Wiki seems to be filled with mostly objective facts.
Just like the dwarves, the elf I saw earlier had pointed ears, was small, and behaved like a social misfit. It’s not a waste to say that Tree Wiki is a repository of universal wisdom.
-Kim Hyun Woo-
[But it says here that if you press this red button, the U.C. convenience store system will assess the situation and call the police from Cosmos-1221 or Cosmos-1. What is that?]
I really like the power that Cosmos-1221 possesses.
The response is quick and the suppression is effective.
I’m curious about how the police in Cosmos-1 would handle a situation.
The slight delay in response time might be because they have to come from another cosmos, but what are the differences?
-Store Manager-
[The criteria are determined by the U.C. convenience store headquarters, so I don’t know exactly, but based on what I know, it depends on whether the problem can be resolved by the police system of that cosmos or not.]
So, if it’s a problem that can be handled by the knights like earlier, then the knights will come. If not, the police from Cosmos-1 will come.
-Store Manager-
[Perhaps when the avatars of the two transcendent beings caused a commotion at our convenience store, if you had pressed the red button back then, the police from Cosmos-1 would have come.]
-Kim Hyun Woo-
[Are the police from Cosmos-1 also very strong or something?]
-Store Manager-
[I’m not sure if describing them as strong is appropriate, but if it’s not a major incident, the police from Cosmos-1 can handle most problems. The authority for cosmic intervention lies with those above me. At the very least, I could have mediated the fight between those two.]
Fortunately, it seems that the use of force by U.C. convenience store doesn’t involve the frustrating issues I’ve experienced before.
Above all, my heart raced at the sight of mercilessly smashing a pot against a minority child.
Ah, I should have recorded that scene.
The sound of the knight throwing the pot at the elf was equivalent to the clear and pure sound that you hear when you tap your finger against a pottery vessel, filled with the spirit of a craftsman.
I wonder if there’s still footage on the CCTV.
“Ugh, uh…
But is there really no perfect law, no matter what power?
After being dragged away for about an hour, the elf returned to the convenience store, groaning and whimpering.
The elf barely managed to enter, leaning on a trembling leg and clutching a staff.
Well, it’s not like I actually hit him or anything, and I didn’t even use my sword, so I must have handled it reasonably.
But I don’t really care.
In fact, this might be a good opportunity to enjoy that satisfying sound once again.
“I, I’m sorry…”
But didn’t he come to retaliate for reporting?
“I’m sorry for getting upset for no reason in a strict place…”
The elf, back at the convenience store, started apologizing to me while wiping away tears and snot from his face.
Just as I was questioning whether this was the same elf who had just grabbed me by the collar, I saw the knights outside the entrance of the convenience store watching us.
From a distance, the knights narrowed one eye through the gap in their helmets and gave a thumbs up, as if to say that they had already done the education.
Or maybe they had provided psychological treatment for the elf’s anger control disorder.
“If you don’t forgive me, that woman wearing the most sacred mask will capture you and lock you up underground forever…”
The most sacred mask? Who is that?
It somehow feels like someone familiar.
Anyway, as I looked again, the elf had several large bumps on his head and his face seemed quite swollen from being hit.
“But the adult I am, right…? It’s because of the characteristics of my elf race, so my body is like this, but I am a real adult! I can swear on my two ears if necessary!”
Seeing him cry in that pitiful way and bow, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him, even though I continued to be watched.
The elf, being an elf, is pretty and cute just by looking at his face, and it’s even somewhat amusing that he received such a beating from the knights.
“So please, I promise I won’t do that again, so please forgive me…”
As the elf hit his head on the ground again and bowed, the knights signaled from afar, “Doesn’t he need more education?”
That gesture is roughly a motion of hitting the hand down with a fist.
If the elf’s attitude is still unsatisfactory, they will do that gesture again.
Since I felt like I had been beaten enough in the past hour that I was dragged away, I’ll let it go at this point.
“Then, next time, take off your hat and order, because if you wear a hat, your ears get itchy and no one can tell if you’re an elf.”
As I removed the dust from the elf’s head, I sent a signal to the knights that this should be enough.
Finally, the knights raised their thumbs again and disappeared into the darkness of the night.
At this point, is the law enforcement here stronger than in the United States?”
“Me? Are you really forgiving me?”
The elf asked, tears welling up in her trembling voice.
As I nodded, her face brightened, as if the knights had given her a good scolding.
I wish the police from another universe were like this too.
“Yeah, but just wait a moment.”
Feeling sorry for the elf and finding her response oddly endearing, I brought a first aid kit from the break room.
“What, what is this? It’s not some weird medicine, right…?”
As I took out ointment from the first aid kit, the elf seemed scared.
I wonder if she knows I didn’t use this as a weakness to give her some strange medicine.
“I used it today too, so don’t worry. Use this for cold compress on wherever it hurts.”
I wrapped the frozen water I took out from the freezer in a towel and handed it to her.
Honestly, I think of myself as an angel.
Who else would directly apply medicine to an elf who had been dragged away and beaten by the knights, grabbed by the neck just a while ago?
“But why are you treating me so kindly?”
“…Because you look pitiful?”
I don’t know, but seeing this elf cry sadly, it reminds me of myself being thrown around by the strongest beings of two different universes earlier today.
Maybe I feel some sympathy for the elf.
“But I just grabbed you by the neck a while ago…”
Surprisingly, she knows what she did.
At least she doesn’t show an attitude like it’s a problem even if someone points a gun at her like the angel I saw during the day.
Either the knights’ physical therapy was excellent, or that angel was uniquely shameless beyond comparison.
“Why do you need a reason to show kindness in the first place? If you want to do it, just do it. If you don’t want to, just ignore it.”
“…”
Instead, I have lived in a universe where even if someone I see for the first time has difficulties due to various social problems, it is difficult to step forward and offer help.
I did it, and so did others.
Even then, in those situations, the best help I could ask for would be reporting it to the police when a madman with a knife comes at me at a convenience store.
But it seemed like this wasn’t at least that kind of place.
“Alright, we’re done. Now sit there and cold compress it for about 10 minutes wherever it hurts. If you stay quiet and behave, you can stay inside the convenience store.”
After applying ointment, I tidied up the first aid kit.
By the way, it’s getting late here, so there are no customers in the convenience store.
Originally, I’m familiar with working the night shift at convenience stores, but being alone here at night gives me an eerie and cold feeling that I can’t quite explain.
I feel like it would be better if those dwarf customers from earlier were still here.
I don’t know why.
“Sob…! I messed up…”
So why is this guy suddenly crying now?
Is it because where I hit him still hurts? The elf started crying again, making me feel sorry for him.
“All the humans I’ve encountered would chase me out of the store or insult me behind my back just for being an elf…”
Is he really an adult? He suddenly starts crying like that, making him look like a child. Or is it that he’s just aged but still has the mentality of a child?
“I really regret overreacting earlier. I will genuinely live as a good person from now on…”
“R-really? That’s great, I guess?”
I couldn’t help but be confused by the sudden confession of this elf, as if he had repented for his past actions.
Just how badly were those knights beating him up?
The number of bruises on the elf’s arms and legs were similar to the amount of beer the dwarves had consumed earlier.
They probably only paid with beer money when they left.
“My name is Diana! If you ever need help, please let me know. I’ll definitely help you too!”
After crying for a long time, the elf named Diana finally stopped and grabbed my hand, showing a very moved expression.
I don’t know the details, but if they managed to turn this anger management disorder kid elf into a proper person, then that’s a successful result, right?
Wow, their physical therapy skills are impressive.
