Chapter 368: Two Younger Sisters-in-Law
The desolate cold wind brushed through the courtyard of Buddha Mother Temple.
Outside the main hall, Li Muyang held a gourd with sincere expression.
Inside the Buddha Hall, Buddha Mother greedily eyed the gourd in his hands, seemingly about to pounce on it any second to snatch it away.
But ultimately, she did not leap forward; instead, she sat upright on a lotus dais cushion.
Although her gaze still fixed intently on the gourd, Buddha Mother answered Li Muyang's question.
"...To not be devoured by this land, it's hard to say it's difficult, but it's also not hard."
"Taking the Seven Marrow Pill that I have refined is a foolish way that treats the symptoms, not the root cause."
"But the foolish method is safe, without risk, just a bit troublesome; you'll have to go underground frequently to help me with the heart-eating worms..."
Buddha Mother chuckled, drooling as she stared at the gourd in Li Muyang's hands, droplets of clear saliva falling from the corner of her mouth: "However, the nature of young people is such that even if they know there's a wall ahead, they're bound to bump into it, until they're battered and bloodied before they stop."
"Since that's the case, I might as well tell you."
Buddha Mother coughed, gently exhaling a puff of black smoke.
As the black smoke spilled from her mouth, it gently wafted inside the main hall. Soon, another bronze lamp lit up beside the old Buddha Mother.
This eerie Buddha Mother, sitting before the statue in the main hall, was flanked by two lamps, one to her left and one to her right.
However, the other lamp had never been lit before, and Li Muyang had not noticed it in his previous visits.
Now that this bronze lamp was lit, its faint green glow cast a sinister and ominous pallor on Buddha Mother's face.
In the flickering flames, she cackled wickedly.
"Beneath this land, lies the remains of an Immortal."
"If it is possible to obtain any piece of flesh or organs from the Immortal's remains, one can avoid being devoured by the land."
"Hmm... speaking of the Immortal's remains..."
Under the light from the red and green bronze lamps, Buddha Mother, her face now shadowy and malevolent, chuckled and finally lifted her head to look at Li Muyang.
In her eyes, there seemed to be a flicker of strange light.
Facing Li Muyang outside the main hall, Buddha Mother extended a hand concealed beneath her kasaya.
Though her face was as strikingly beautiful as that of the Glass Immortal Maiden, Chu Qingxue, when she extended her hand, what appeared in Li Muyang's view was a withered, age-spotted palm of an old lady.
She chuckled, telling Li Muyang, "…The sachet I previously lent you for protection, it's time to return it."
The old woman reached out to request it, and from the pitch-black age spots on the withered palm, it seemed as if countless black shadows were wailing and writhing.
This emaciated and hideous palm scared the Moon Biting Jiao into crying out in shock.
Li Muyang's expression remained calm, but his eyelids could not help but twitch violently.
This hand… was more terrifying than that of an ordinary elderly person.
It looked completely devoid of life, more like that of a mummified corpse than a living person's hand.
Forcing down the discomfort in his heart, Li Muyang, with a composed demeanor, took out the sachet that Buddha Mother had given him for self-defense, which supposedly contained the heart of an Immortal made of seven-colored glass, capable of warding off Master Bai Er.
But after he left the mountain, Master Bai Er did not attack him, so the seven-colored glass heart was never put to use.
After retrieving the sachet, a silent white shadow emerged in the darkness of the main hall.
The pale, featureless humanoid without even a trace of clothing on received the sachet from his hands, then respectfully handed it to the Buddha Mother inside the hall.
Buddha Mother carefully placed the sachet back into the pouch under her kasaya, then she lifted her head and smiled at Li Muyang.
"The Immortal's remains are here, in the lands beyond this border."
"I will have Xiao Yue and Xiao Die lead you to find the Immortal's remains. As for whether you can obtain a piece of the Immortal's flesh... it will depend on your own ability, Muyang."
As Buddha Mother finished speaking, the shadows behind her rustled, and it seemed that the low murmurs of many people echoed.
But in the end, only two figures stepped forward.
They were two girls with bright eyes and white teeth, their expressions filled with curiosity.
They walked out excitedly, their gaze fixed on Li Muyang just outside the door.
Inside the great hall, the Buddha Mother said with a chuckle, "They are also my daughters and can be considered Qing Xue's sisters."
"You may follow them down the mountain, Xiao Die and Xiao Yue will lead you to the Immortal's remains."
The chilly winds of the world blew, and the two young girls, dressed in black clothes and skirts, were attired just like the wicked girls of the monastery.
However, they did not carry black swords on their backs.
They looked at Li Muyang with curiosity, their eyes pure and inquisitive, much like two innocent girls who had yet to encounter the world.
"Come with us," they said.
"We guarantee you'll find the Immortal's remains."
"But we're only here to guide you."
"Once you find the Immortal's remains, we'll make our escape."
"Don't expect us to help."
"Even if you die, we won't lift a finger." Your next journey awaits at My Virtual Library Empire
After leaving the great hall, the two young girls began their prattling, each taking their turn.
Li Muyang fell silent for a moment, a system prompt appearing in his field of vision.
[Main Quest Unlocked: The Immortal's Remains]
[The Immortal's Remains: Find the Immortal's remains and seize a portion of the Immortal's flesh or organs to ward off the danger of being swallowed by the land.]
[Note: The current task is optional and does not affect other main storylines.]
Staring at the system prompt in his field of vision, Li Muyang narrowed his eyes.
The system's prompt proved that the Buddha Mother wasn't deceiving him with her suggestion.
But clearly, there was more than one method to avoid being consumed by the land beyond the frontier.
It's just that the Buddha Mother was only willing to tell him this one, which seemed to be quite difficult...
This crafty old witch, could she be intending to wait for Li Muyang to fail, then have him obediently return to catch Heart Eaters for her?
After all, fifty Heart Eaters could be exchanged for one Seven Marrow Pill, extending life by one month.
For this old witch, it was too good a deal.
Li Muyang took a deep breath and said, "Thank you, Senior Xie, for the guidance. I will now go seek the Immortal's remains."
Although this main quest might be more difficult, the only method currently accessible to Li Muyang was this one.
There might be other methods with the monsters beyond the frontier, but why on earth would those heretical demons disclose them to Li Muyang for no reason?
Li Muyang had no choice but to accept the task.
After bidding farewell to the Buddha Mother, whose presence in the great hall was ominously creepy, Li Muyang descended the mountain with the two girls the Buddha Mother had entrusted to him.
The two girls, called daughters by the Buddha Mother, started hopping with glee once they left the monastery.
They were like two children who had been confined at home for too long.
Cheering happily, they ran towards the town at the foot of the mountain, completely disregarding Li Muyang who was following behind them.
The offbeat behavior of the two girls made Dragon Maiden a bit anxious.
"...Li Muyang, can we really rely on these two?" she asked.
"I thought they were sent by your mother-in-law to watch you, but now they seem even scarier than if they were just keeping an eye on you."
"Your mother-in-law didn't trick you into babysitting, did she..."
Li Muyang walked on the downhill path, following behind the two girls, watching their every move with a watchful eye.
"As long as we can find the Immortal's remains, that's all that matters. There's no need to concern ourselves with the rest," he said softly.
