The Extra's Rise

Chapter 407: Silver-Rank Guild (3)

"Congratulations, Guild Master Nightingale. Ouroboros is officially recognized as a Silver-rank guild."

The Guild Authority representative handed me the certificate with a formality that couldn't quite mask his surprise. The speed of our ascension had clearly caught the bureaucracy off guard. Most guilds spent years—sometimes decades—climbing from Bronze to Silver. We'd done it in less than two years.

I accepted the certificate with appropriate solemnity, though inside I felt a surge of satisfaction. Another step in the plan executed perfectly.

"Ouroboros thanks the Authority for its recognition," I replied, following the traditional exchange.

The representative nodded stiffly. "The privileges and responsibilities of Silver status are outlined in the accompanying documentation. Your guild territory rights have been expanded accordingly." He hesitated before adding, "The Authority expects Ouroboros to uphold the standards befitting its new rank."

The unspoken warning was clear—our rapid rise had raised eyebrows. We would be watched closely.

"We understand completely," I assured him, maintaining the polite smile that revealed nothing of my thoughts.

After the representative departed, I turned to find Kali and Reika waiting just inside the guild hall entrance. Kali's expression was triumphant, while Reika's eyes were fixed on me with quiet pride.

"It's official," I said, holding up the certificate.

Kali's face broke into a wide grin. "Let's celebrate properly!"

Word spread through the guild like wildfire. Members who had been strategically absent during the official inspection suddenly appeared, carrying drinks and food. Someone had clearly prepared for this outcome in advance.

Within an hour, the main hall of Ouroboros had transformed into a celebration. Music played from speakers, tables groaned under the weight of food, and the atmosphere hummed with excitement. Members who had joined when we were the lowest-ranked Bronze guild now found themselves part of a prestigious Silver organization—a status change that would benefit their own careers and reputations significantly.

I circulated through the crowd, accepting congratulations and speaking briefly with various members. Some I knew well, others had joined during my absence, but all shared the same excitement for what our new status meant.

As the celebration continued, I noticed Elias making his way toward me through the crowd, two drinks in hand.

"Thought you might need this," he said, offering me one. "It's getting wild in here."

"Thanks," I accepted the drink. "Everything going smoothly?"

"Aside from Jorgen trying to demonstrate his new fire technique and nearly burning down the east wall? Perfectly." Elias grinned. "We've come a long way from you coming to talk to me in the Black Market."

I smiled at the memory. When I'd first taken formed Ouroboros, it had been little more than a name and a nearly abandoned building. Now we occupied an expanded complex with over sixty members.

"Your office in twenty minutes?" Elias suggested quietly. "Kali mentioned something about a private celebration for the leadership."

I nodded. "I'll be there."

After fulfilling my social obligations for a reasonable period, I slipped away from the main celebration. The private offices were in a separate wing—recently constructed and significantly more secure than the rest of the building.

When I entered my office, I found it had been transformed as well. Someone—likely Kali—had arranged for food and drinks to be set up on the conference table. The formal meeting space now looked almost cozy, with soft lighting from mana crystals creating a warm atmosphere.

Reika was already there, arranging glasses with precise movements. She looked up as I entered, and a soft smile touched her lips.

"Guild Master," she acknowledged, her formality at odds with the warmth in her eyes.

"Just Arthur tonight," I corrected her. "I think we can dispense with titles for a private celebration."

Her smile widened slightly. "Arthur, then."

The door opened again as Kali and Elias arrived together, laughing about something.

"Finally escaped the mob?" Kali asked, dropping into one of the chairs with casual grace. At eighteen, she carried herself with the confidence of someone much older—a natural leader who had stepped up remarkably during my absence.

"Barely," I admitted, taking a seat at the head of the table. "They're certainly enthusiastic."

"They should be," Elias said, placing a small wooden box on the table. "Silver-rank changes everything for most of them." At twenty-four, he was the oldest of our core group, bringing experience and stability to balance Kali's ambition and Reika's intensity.

Reika finished arranging the glasses and took the seat to my right. At nineteen, she occupied an interesting position between Kali and Elias in age, but her maturity level fluctuated dramatically depending on the context—coolly professional in most situations, almost childlike in her eagerness to please when it came to matters concerning me specifically.

"A toast," Kali proposed, filling the glasses with what appeared to be actual Silverfrost wine—an expensive vintage normally reserved for nobility. "To the fastest Bronze-to-Silver promotion in history."

"To Ouroboros," Elias added, raising his glass.

"To our Guild Master's return," Reika said quietly, her eyes never leaving my face.

I raised my glass as well. "To all of you. This wouldn't have been possible without what you built during my absence."

We drank, and I noted with amusement that despite being the youngest at seventeen, I was somehow the de facto leader of this group of capable individuals.

"So," Kali said after savoring her wine, "what's next? We've barely had time to absorb your return, and now we're already Silver-rank. Do we start working toward Gold immediately, or consolidate our position first?"

It was a good question.

"Consolidation," I decided. "Silver-rank comes with scrutiny. The Twelve Great Guilds will be watching us now, especially with our unusually rapid promotion."

"Agreed," Elias nodded. "Too much ambition too quickly makes enemies."

"We should focus on establishing our new territory rights," Reika suggested. "The eastern district is now officially under our jurisdiction."

"And there's the matter of our new alliance opportunities," Kali added. "Several Bronze guilds have already sent congratulatory messages that read suspiciously like partnership proposals."

I leaned back, listening to their analysis with approval. Each brought a different perspective, a different strength to our leadership.

"Open the box, Elias," I said, gesturing to the wooden container he'd brought.

Elias smiled and flipped the latch. Inside were four silver pins, each crafted in the shape of Ouroboros's symbol—a serpent devouring its own tail. Unlike the standard member emblems, these were inlaid with small mana crystals that glowed with inner light.

"Leadership insignias," he explained, removing them carefully. "I commissioned them when we first applied for Silver status. One for each of us."

He distributed the pins, and I examined mine with appreciation for the craftsmanship. The detail was exquisite, the materials high quality.

"These are beautiful, Elias," I acknowledged. "Thank you."

"It was my pleasure," he replied. "Consider it a welcome-back gift as well."

We attached the pins to our clothing—a visible symbol of our core leadership group.

"To the four pillars of Ouroboros," Kali declared, raising her glass again. "The Visionary, the Sword, the Shield, and the Foundation." She nodded to each of us in turn—me, Reika, herself, and Elias.

Reika's cheeks colored slightly at being publicly acknowledged as my sword, but she raised her glass with the rest of us.

As the evening progressed, the conversation flowed easily between guild business and more personal matters. Kali regaled us with stories of difficult clients during my absence. Elias described how they'd acquired the funding for the building expansion through a particularly clever contract negotiation. Reika spoke less, but when she did, it was usually to provide precise details the others had forgotten.

The door opened, and a tall woman with crimson hair entered. Carrie Milton carried herself with the easy confidence that came from years near the pinnacle of the adventuring world.

"Sorry I'm late," she said, taking the remaining empty seat. "Had to finish up some paperwork with the Authority. They had questions about my guild affiliation, as usual."

"Trying to poach you again?" Kali asked with a grin.

"Always." Carrie shrugged, helping herself to a glass of wine. "The Diamond guilds can't understand why a seven-star would choose Silver. Or Bronze, as we were until today."

"Now the guild is finally worthy of your presence," I said, raising my glass in her direction.

Carrie's sharp eyes assessed me thoughtfully. "And you've become a worthy Guild Master in terms of strength as well, it seems." She tapped her own seven-star license. "Not any your age is carrying one of these."

"An honor I didn't seek," I replied honestly.

"The best ones never do," she countered with a knowing smile. "I've seen enough posturing glory-seekers to last several lifetimes. That's why I joined Ouroboros in the first place." She raised her glass. "I will never regret that decision."

"Your expertise has been invaluable," Elias acknowledged. "Especially with training the newer recruits."

Carrie nodded. "They have potential. Just needed proper guidance."

"And now?" I asked her directly. "With Silver-rank and a second seven-star in leadership? What's your assessment?"

She didn't hesitate. "Unprecedented growth trajectory. The other Silver guilds won't know what hit them."

"Two conditions," she added, raising two fingers. "First, we maintain quality over quantity in recruitment. Second, we leverage our unique strengths instead of trying to compete conventionally."

"Agreed on both counts," I said.

Watching them interact, I felt an unexpected surge of pride. These people had become something more than colleagues, more than guild members. In my absence, they had formed bonds of trust and mutual respect that transcended ordinary working relationships.

And now I had returned to lead them into the next phase. Silver-rank was just the beginning. With the right approach, Ouroboros could rise further still—perhaps eventually challenging the Diamond-rank guilds at the very top of the hierarchy.

"You have that look again," Kali observed, interrupting my thoughts.

"What look?" I asked.

"The one where you're plotting something ridiculously ambitious that will probably work despite all logic suggesting it shouldn't," she replied with a knowing smirk.

I smiled. "Is that so?"

"Definitely," Elias agreed. "We've come to recognize it."

"It's the same expression you had when you first proposed turning a failing Bronze guild into something significant," Reika added quietly.

"She's right," Carrie chimed in. "I've seen that look before—on people who changed the world."

They knew me well—perhaps better than I was entirely comfortable with. Yet another thing that had changed during my eleven-month absence.

"Well," I said, raising my glass one final time, "to ambitious plans, then. And to Silver-rank being just another step in Ouroboros's journey."

They joined the toast, glasses clinking in the warm light of the mana crystals. Five people of different ages, backgrounds, and temperaments, united by a shared vision.

The Silver serpent was rising, and we would rise with it.
