The Eternal Dao Sect: Legacy of Chaos

Chapter 7: Chapter 4: The Shadow Strike

-

The silence of the Black Hollow forest was an eerie thing. The wind whispered through the dense canopy, carrying with it a chill unnatural, which prickled Jayson's skin. The village behind him seemed impossibly far away, though he and Lucas had only just left its borders. The weight of their mission hung heavy in the air, as if the forest itself could sense the coming confrontation.

"We've been walking for hours, and nothing's happened yet," Lucas muttered, his eyes darting warily at the shifting shadows between the trees. His hand crackled faintly with residual lightning energy, a nervous reflex. "I don't trust this quiet."

"It's not quiet," Jayson said, his voice low. He gripped the hilt of his sword tightly, the chaos energy within him pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat. "Listen closer."

Lucas leaned his head to one side, hard, to hear beyond the rustling leaves. Then he caught it—a faint growl, low and guttural, barely audible but unmistakably predatory. It was followed by the sound of snapping twigs and the rustling of underbrush.

"They're here," Lucas said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Jayson nodded. "Stay sharp."

The first creature emerged from the shadows, its glowing red eyes cutting through the gloom. It was grotesque, its body twisted and unnatural, with sinewy limbs and claws that gleamed like obsidian. A low snarl rumbled from its throat as it stepped forward, its movements deliberate and predatory.

"That's. different," Lucas said, summoning sparks of electricity to his fingertips.

Before either of them could react, more creatures appeared, their glowing eyes multiplying in the darkness. They moved in unison, their steps synchronized as though guided by a single mind.

"Well," Lucas said, taking a step back, "this just got interesting."

Jayson drew his sword, its blade reflecting the faint light of the glowing eyes around them. His chaos energy flared, enveloping him in a dark, swirling aura. "Let's see what they've got."

---

The First Wave

The lead creature launched itself at them, its claws flashing in blurred arcs. Jayson met it head-on; his sword cut in a perfect arc. The blade bit deep, slicing through skin and bone amidst a spray of black ichor. It fell with a pained howl, yet there was little time to celebrate.

Another beast charged from the side and swooped down its claws to his neck. Jayson ducked under, spun on his heel, and cleaved upwards into the creature.

Lucas was not idle either. He released a bolt of lightning that hit two creatures at once; their charred bodies crumpled onto the ground. "We aren't going to last much longer if this keeps up," he said with strained emphasis.

Jayson gritted his teeth as he parried another attack. "Then we make it quick."

The two fought with a brutal efficiency born from years of training. Jayson's chaos energy and Lucas's lightning complemented each other perfectly, their combined efforts keeping the creatures at bay. But for every beast they cut down, two more seemed to take its place.

"They're endless," Lucas shouted, his lightning strikes slowing as his energy waned.

"No," Jayson said, his eyes narrowing. "They're coordinated."

A Revelation in the Dark

As the battle raged on, Jayson began to notice a pattern in the creatures' movements. They weren't attacking at random—they were herding him and Lucas, driving them deeper into the forest.

"There's something guiding them," Jayson said, dodging a swipe from a particularly large beast.

"What are you talking about?" Lucas asked, blasting another creature with a surge of lightning.

Jayson pointed toward a faint glow in the distance, barely visible through the trees. "That. Whatever it is, it's controlling them."

Lucas followed his gaze, his brow furrowing. "And your plan is. what? Charge in and hope for the best?"

Jayson's chaos energy flared, his resolve hardening. "Do you have a better idea?"

Lucas sighed, electricity crackling around him. "I hate when you're right."

The Heart of the Enemy

The two fought their way toward the glow, cutting through the seemingly endless horde of creatures. The air grew thicker as they approached, heavy with an oppressive energy that made it hard to breathe.

When they finally broke through the treeline, they found themselves in a clearing dominated by a massive, pulsating orb of light. Its surface churned like molten metal, and tendrils of darkness extended from it, connecting to the creatures like puppet strings.

"This is it," Jayson said, his voice steady despite the chaos raging around them.

The orb pulsed brighter, as if sensing their presence. From the shadows emerged a towering beast, far larger than any they had faced so far. Its body was wreathed in darkness, its eyes burning with an intense, otherworldly fire.

Lucas let out a low whistle. "And here I thought this was going to be easy."

Jayson stepped forward, his sword at the ready. "Stay behind me."

The guardian roared, its voice shaking the very ground beneath their feet. It charged with a speed that belied its size, its claws tearing through the air.

---

The Final Stand

Jayson met the guardian head-on, his sword clashing with its claws in a shower of sparks. The force of the impact sent him skidding backward, but he quickly regained his footing, his chaos energy flaring brighter.

Lucas circled and let out a bolt of lightning that struck the beast in its side. It roared loudly in pain, although, rather than weakening the beast, the attack merely seemed to infuriate it.

"We need to take out the orb!" Jayson shouted, dodging a swipe from the guardian.

Lucas nodded, and his new flurry of attacks went towards the glowing sphere. Each strike caused the orb to flicker, its light growing dimmer with every hit.

The guardian sensed the threat and turned to Lucas. It lunged, massive claws aimed straight for his chest.

"Lucas!" Jayson shouted, throwing himself in the way of his friend and the beast. He raised his sword to block the attack, but he was still hit by it full force, sending him crashing to the ground with a burning chest.

Lucas didn't waste the chance. He let out a cascade of lightning that hit the ball directly, shattering it into a thousand light shards.

The creatures froze, their glowing eyes dimming as the tendrils connecting them to the orb disintegrated. One by one, they fell, their bodies turning to ash.

The guardian had one final deafening roar and then collapsed into a heap, its body dissipating into shadows.

Victory at a Price

Jayson groggily stood up. His body protested the motion in pain from their fight. "You okay?" he rasped.

Lucas smiled, yet he didn't look any less bruised up. "Still breathing. You?"

Jayson nodded and hid his sword into the scabbard. "We did it."

Jayson and Lucas stood there within the clearing among the remnants of their enemies. The forest seemed silent once again, but it was silent as if a period at rest.

"We should head back," Lucas said, glancing toward the village. "Something tells me this isn't the last time we'll be dealing with those things."

Jayson stared after the spot that had held the orb, a feeling of unease settling over him. "No," he whispered. "This is just the beginning."
