Chapter 22: Chapter 19: Shadow Of The Mellians
The days that followed the council meeting were a blur of activities. The victory the group had scored over Keiran had earned them grudging respect from some of the clans, but it also painted a target on their backs. This fragile alliance of the clans now felt like a ticking bomb, where the smallest spark would set chaos aglow. Yet, even in the tension, something even darker loomed on the horizon.
And then, across the land, the signs of the Mellians' encroachment became impossible to ignore: stars falling from the heavens in streaks of light that were unnatural, rivers running black as ink, and whole villages vanished overnight, leaving nothing but an eerie silence in their wake. Rumors spread like wildfire of metallic beings prowling the outskirts of human settlements.
The clans met once more, this time with a sense of urgency.

A New Mission
They had gathered in the strategy room of the Silvermoon Clan, and the atmosphere in the room almost hummed with tension as Elder Arthus spoke to them. In front of him, on the table, lay a huge map of the surrounding territories, its surface marked with ominous red circles.
"We've received reports of unusual activity near the Blightwood Forest," Arthus began, pointing to a cluster of markings. "Scouting parties have been sent to investigate. None of them have returned."
"Blightwood?" Joyner muttered. "Even without the Mellians, that place is cursed."
Arthus let the comment slide and went ahead. "We have reason to believe this is the work of the Mellians. If they are building a foothold there, we must act fast. Your group shall investigate."
Jayson took another step forward, his gray eyes narrowing. "And if we find them?"
"You eliminate the threat, if possible," replied Arthus. "If not, fall back and report immediately. The clans cannot afford to lose you.
Diane crossed her arms. "Sounds like you're sending us into a death trap."
"It's the only way to confirm the Mellians' presence," Arthus said, meeting her gaze. "And to determine their strength."
Mike adjusted the grip on his spear. "We're wasting time. Let's move."
Arthus nodded. "May the Dao guide you."

Into the Blightwood
Blightwood Forest was the stuff of nightmares even before the Mellians came. Its gnarled trees twisted together like skeletal hands, and a thick fog clung to the ground, muffling sound and distorting sight.
As they went deeper, the atmosphere grew deadeningly heavy. The air was thick, filled with an unnatural energy that set their nerves jangling.
"This place feels wrong," Cindy whispered, sticking close to Mike.
"Feels like we're being watched," Lucas muttered, his bow at the ready.
Jayson held up a hand, signaling for silence. His Chaos Sword vibrated faintly in his grip, reacting to the hostile energy around them. "Stay focused. This forest is alive, and it doesn't want us here."
Hours dragged as they moved onward. The fog got worse until it was just a few feet in front of their noses. A light ahead-they began pulsing like the rhythmic pace of the heartbeat.
"What is that?" Sarah whispered softly.
"A Mellian beacon," Diane responded gravely, "They are marking their territory."
---
Ambush in the Fog
As they reached the beacon, a chilling sound sliced through the air-a low, guttural growl that seemed to emanate from all directions at once.
"They're here," Jayson said in a steady but quiet voice.
The group assumed a defensive circle, weapons drawn. From the shadows, the Mellians emerged. Humanoid in shape, grotesquely alien. Shimmering metallic skin glinted like liquid mercury, and their glowing eyes burned with malevolent intent.
The first Mellian lunged at Victor, claws raking at his throat. Victor blocked with his shield, grunting under the impact. "These things hit hard!"
Mike thrust his spear into another Mellian, only to watch in disbelief as the wound sealed itself instantly.
"They regenerate!" Cindy shouted, hurling a fire talisman. The explosion that resulted incinerated a Mellian, its metallic body melting into a pool of slag.
"Fire!" Jayson yelled. "It's their weakness!
With his Chaos Sword engulfed in dark flames, he plunged into the battle, swinging and cutting down Mellians. Diane followed behind him, her twin daggers on fire as she struck with precision.
Lucas rained arrows from above, while Joyner and Raymond fought back-to-back, their combined techniques overpowering the relentless enemies.
The Mellians just kept on coming, it seemed like an endless number.
Destroying the Beacon
We cannot keep this up!" Ben yelled, cleaving a Mellian in two, only for another to take its place.
Jayson's gaze darted toward the beacon. Its glow was intensifying, pulsating faster with each passing moment. "We need to destroy that thing!"
"Cover him!" Diane ordered, charging forward.
Jayson sprinted toward the beacon with Mike and Lucas flanking him, cutting down the Mellians that tried to stand in their way. The energy of the beacon was palpable, pushing against them as if it were a physical force.
Jayson raised the Chaos Sword high above his head, channeling every ounce of his energy into the blade. The dark flames roared to life, consuming not just the sword but his arm.
"Jayson, wait!" Diane called out, but it was too late.
With a deafening roar, Jayson brought the sword down upon the beacon. The structure exploded in the impact, emitting a shockwave that flung everyone across the space.
The collective screech from the Mellians was the last thing to be heard before their bodies crumbled to metallic dust.
---
Aftermath
When the dust settled, the group got back together, bruised but breathing.
"That was…something else," Joyner said, supporting his weight on his staff.
Jayson sat on the ground, cradling his burned arm. "At least it worked," he said with a weak smile.
Diane knelt beside him, her expression a mix of relief and frustration. "You're reckless. What if that had killed you?"
"But it didn't," Jayson replied, wincing as she applied a healing salve.
Victor stood, surveying the battlefield. "If this was just a scouting party, we're in serious trouble. The main force will be far worse."
"We need to warn the clans," Cindy said, her voice trembling. "They have no idea what's coming."
---
A Renewed Resolve
As they made their way back to the Silvermoon stronghold, the weight of what they had seen pressed heavily on their minds.
Jayson looked at his friends, each of them bruised and battered but unbroken. Despite the danger, he felt a spark of hope.
"We'll get stronger," he said aloud, his voice steady. "No matter what it takes, we'll be ready for the Mellians."
"And we'll do it together," Diane added, her voice firm.
The group exchanged determined glances. The Mellians were terrifying, but they were not invincible.
Together, they would rise to the challenge.
