The Eternal Dao Sect: Legacy of Chaos

Chapter 17: Chapter 14: The Path Of No Return

The sun hung low on the horizon, casting long shadows over the group as they trudged through the desolate plains. The air was dry and heavy, a suffocating reminder of the Mellians' growing influence. Every step forward felt like a step closer to an uncertain fate, but none of them dared voice their doubts.

Jayson, his eyes scanning the landscape for any signs of danger, led the group. His sword hung loosely beside him, ready to strike at any moment. Behind him, Diane walked with quiet determination, her eyes occasionally falling on Victor, who trailed at the rear of the group.

Victor was a heavy weight to them all. He had told them so much about the Mellians and their weapon, the Voidspire, but trust was a fragile thing. Every step he took, every word he said, was met with wary eyes. Even Jayson, who gave him another chance-mostly-found it hard to fully let go of his suspicions.

Are we sure this is the way?" Mike asked, finally breaking the heavy silence. He covered his brow from the sun and scanned across the desolate landscape.

Victor finally spoke, quiet but sure: "Yes. Just beyond that ridge lies the outpost of the Mellians." He nodded toward a sharp line of hills in the distance. "That is where they are building the Voidspire.

Mike scoffed. "And we're just supposed to take your word for it?"

"Enough, Mike," Cindy said sharply. "We've already decided to give Victor a chance. Let's not waste energy arguing."

Mike muttered something under his breath but fell silent.

The group trudged onward, the strain between them as pronounced as the warm glow of the sun. As they crested over the ridge, the air started to chill, and an odd buzz began to emanate from the ground.

Diane slowed her walk, her palm on the sword's hilt. "Can you feel it?" she said in a silent whisper.

Jayson nodded. "We are close. People, keep a watch.

As they crested the ridge, the sight that greeted them was a wonder and a terror to behold. Down below them lay a sprawling Mellian outpost, its architecture alien and angular. Dark spires jutted out of the ground like jagged teeth, and strange, pulsing lights ran along the structures, casting an eerie glow over the area.

In the center of the outpost stood the Voidspire: a gigantic weapon, a tower-like structure built from black metal, filled with pulsating energy in shades of blue. It hummed with a power that seemed to vibrate through the very air.

"They're further than I had thought," Victor said in a thickened voice of dread. "Not much time."

Jayson turned to face them all, his face grim. "This is it. If we're going to stop them, it has to be now. There's no turning back."

"How are we supposed to fight our way through all of that?" Sarah asked, her voice shaking a little. "There are hundreds of them down there."

"We don't need to fight them all," Diane said. "We just need to destroy the Voidspire.

Victor nodded. "She's right. The Voidspire is the key. If we take it out, their entire operation will crumble."

Mike frowned. "And how exactly are we supposed to do that? Walk in and politely ask them to let us destroy it?

There is a weak point," Victor said, not catching the sarcasm. "The energy core of the Voidspire is exposed at its base. If we can hit it hard enough, it will destabilize the whole structure."

Jayson's eyes narrowed. "And what does it do when it destabilizes?"

Victor was taken aback. "It'll cause a massive explosion. Anyone within a mile radius will get caught in the blast."

The weight of Victor's words settled over them as they all turned silent.

"So it's a suicide mission," Mike said bitterly.

"No," Jayson said firmly. "It's a calculated risk. If we don't stop the Voidspire, the Mellians will wipe out everything we know. This is our only chance."

Cindy stepped forward. "I'll go. I'll plant the explosives."

"No," Victor said quickly. "I know the layout of the outpost better than anyone. I'll do it."

"You expect us to trust you with that?" Mike asked in disbelief.

Victor met Mike's gaze. "I don't expect you to trust me. But I'm the best chance you've got."

Jayson raised a hand, forestalling the argument. "We go together. We cover Victor while he lays down the explosives. Once the Voidspire is down, we retreat as fast as we can."

"And if we don't make it out in time?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.

Jayson's expression softened. "Then at least we'll have done something that matters."

The group exchanged glances, their fear and uncertainty mirrored in each other's eyes. But there was also resolve—a shared understanding that this was their moment to stand against the Mellians, no matter the cost.

Down the ridge and into the outpost, Jayson had this feeling of calmness suddenly just wash over him. It would be a path filled with hazards ahead, but he knew they were ready. Together, they would face whatever awaited them.

They stopped just outside the perimeter of the Mellian camp. Strange alien guards patrolled the area, their bodies sleek and armored with an unnatural glow. Their weapons buzzed with energy, and their movements were unnervingly synchronized.

Victor gestured for the group to crouch behind a cluster of boulders. "There's an entrance on the western side," he whispered. "It's less guarded. If we're careful, we can slip in undetected."

Jayson nodded. "Mike, Cindy, and Sarah, you're with me. We'll create a diversion on the eastern side. Diane, you take the rest with Victor. You keep him covered while he lays down the explosives."

Diane's brow furrowed. "You're dividing us up?"

"We don't have a choice," Jayson said. "If we go in all at once, we're sure to draw too much attention. This way, we split their attention.

Diane hesitated, but finally nodded. "Alright. Just… don't do anything reckless."

Jayson could manage a small smile. "When have I ever?"

She rolled her eyes but didn't further argue.

As the group split up, Jayson felt a surge of unease. This was dangerous, and the odds were against them. But he pushed the doubt aside. There was no room for hesitation now.

Jayson's team quickly and silently moved to the eastern side of the camp. When they were in range, he gave the signal for Mike to create a small explosion with his fire-based Dao. The blast boomed through the air, drawing the attention of several Mellian guards.

"Now!" Jayson shouted, charging forward with his sword drawn.

In an instant, the guards were fully alert, their weapons crackling to life. Jayson ducked and weaved around their attacks, his blade moving with precision. Behind him, Mike and Cindy released their powers, keeping the Mellians at bay.

Meanwhile, Diane's team slipped into camp through the western entrance. They moved as carefully as possible to avoid patrols while making their way toward the Voidspire. The closer they drew, the heavier the energy weighed on them.

Victor led them down to the very base of the structure where the energy core pulsed bright, blinding blue. He began to set the explosives, his hands moving with practiced efficiency.

"Almost there," he muttered.

Diane continued to watch their surroundings, her grip tight on her weapon. "Hurry up, Victor. We don't have much time."

The sound of footsteps coming closer quickened her heartbeat. A group of Mellians rounded the corner, weapons raised.

"Try holding them off!" Diane shouted.

The team went to work, fighting fiercely against the oncoming Mellians. Movements were swift and calculated in Diane's attack; her blade cut the air with deadly precision.

Victor planted the last explosive and looked up. "It's set! We have to go—now!"

Diane nodded, cutting down the last Mellian in her way. "Fall back!"

The team fell back, the hum of the Voidspire growing louder as the explosives went off.

Jayson's group rejoined them outside the camp, their breathing ragged, their faces smeared with sweat and grime.

"Is it done?" Jayson asked.

Victor nodded. "It's done."

The energy core began to brighten as the Voidspire started to shudder and quake. In one great burst of energy, the structure imploded, sending shockwaves through the ground beneath their feet.

The group had barely reached cover when the explosion burst forth, engulfing the Mellian outpost in a blinding flash of light.

When the dust settled, all that remained of the Voidspire was a smoldering crater.

They had won, but the cost of their victory remained to be seen.
