Chapter 10: Chapter 7: The Infernal Peaks
---
The Infernal Peaks stretched endlessly before them, a jagged range of blackened rock and glowing fissures. The setting sun bathed the peaks in a fiery red hue, making the entire landscape look like the gates of the underworld. Jayson stopped to catch his breath, his sword strapped tightly to his back. The climb had already proven treacherous, but now, at the base of the tallest peak, the true test was about to begin.
"We've reached the foot of the Infernal Peaks," Diane said, wiping her brow. "From here, it's nothing but unstable terrain and boiling heat. Are we sure we're ready for this?"
"There's no turning back," Jayson replied. His voice carried the weight of their mission. "If the Artifact of Fire is up there, we can't let anyone else get to it. Too much is at stake."
Lucas gave a short laugh, tossing his sparking dagger between his hands. "Well, if nothing else, at least this place matches my aesthetic. Fire and chaos."
Joyner rolled his eyes. "Keep joking. When the heat starts melting your brain, let me know how funny you find it."
"Enough," Jayson said, silencing their banter. "We move as one. Stay alert and watch each other's backs. This mountain isn't just dangerous because of the terrain. There's something alive here—I can feel it."
---
The Ascent Begins
The climb began with narrow paths carved into the mountainside. Each step was a gamble, as loose rocks tumbled down the cliffs at the slightest disturbance. The heat was oppressive, waves of it radiating from the molten cracks in the ground. As they climbed higher, the air became thinner, making every breath a struggle.
"This mountain is alive," Mike said, his voice low. "I can feel it watching us."
"You're not imagining it," Diane replied, her hand glowing faintly with frost as she tried to keep the heat at bay. "The energy here is. suffocating. It's almost as if the mountain itself doesn't want us here."
"Good thing we're stubborn," Lucas said, though his tone was more serious than usual.
Suddenly, a loud cracking sound echoed through the air. Before anyone could react, the ground beneath Joyner gave way. He fell with a shout, his spear clattering against the rocks.
"Joyner!" Victor shouted, lunging forward. He grabbed Joyner's arm just as the latter slipped further down the slope.
"Pull me up!" Joyner yelled, his legs dangling over a deep chasm.
Jayson and Mike rushed to Victor's side, grabbing hold of Joyner and pulling him back onto solid ground. The group collapsed in a heap, their breaths heavy.
"That was too close," Joyner muttered, brushing dust off his tunic.
"Close doesn't cut it," Diane said sharply. "We can't afford mistakes like that. This mountain will kill us if we're not careful."
"She's right," Jayson added, his voice firm. "Stay focused. This is just the beginning."
---
The Fiery Heart of the Mountain
As they climbed higher, the air grew hotter, the ground beneath them almost too hot to touch. Streams of molten lava flowed down the mountainside, creating glowing rivers of fire that cut across their path.
"This is insane," Janet said, her voice shaking. She looked at Mike, who walked beside her, his expression calm despite the danger. "How are you so calm right now?"
Mike smiled faintly. "I'm not calm. I'm terrified. But panicking won't help. Just stay close to me. I won't let anything happen to you."
Janet nodded, her cheeks flushing slightly as she fell into step behind him.
Lyanna, who had been silent for most of the climb, suddenly stopped. "Wait," she said, raising a hand. "Something's coming."
The group froze, their hands going to their weapons. The ground began to shake violently, and a deafening roar echoed through the peaks. From the molten fissures ahead, a massive creature emerged.
It was a Flame Titan. Its body was composed entirely of molten rock, with streams of lava coursing through its veins. Its eyes glowed like twin suns, and its fiery mane crackled with energy.
"What in the name of the heavens is that?" Sarah whispered, her bow trembling in her hands.
"A Flame Titan," Lyanna replied grimly. "A guardian of the Artifact of Fire. It won't let us pass without a fight."
Jayson stepped forward, his sword already glowing with energy. "Then we fight. Everyone, spread out! Don't let it target us all at once!"
---
The Battle with the Flame Titan
The Flame Titan roared, raising a massive arm and slamming it down onto the ground. The impact sent a shockwave of molten fire surging toward the group. They scattered, narrowly avoiding the searing wave.
Lucas retaliated first, throwing a bolt of lightning at the Titan's head. The crackling energy struck true, causing the creature to stagger back. But the Titan quickly recovered, its molten body absorbing the blow as if it were nothing.
"This thing's tougher than it looks!" Lucas shouted, dodging a fiery swing of the Titan's arm.
Diving into a swirl of ice shards, Diane threw them at the Titan's chest. The ice shards hissed, striking the surface that was almost molten; they burst in steam. A furious roar rose from the throat of the Titan as it tried to swipe Diane with its colossal hand.
"Be careful," Jayson cried out, stepping forward and trying to block the blow with his sword. It sent him rolling back, but he did not give up his ground.
"We need to hit its core!" Lyanna shouted, her energy bolts bouncing harmlessly off the Titan's body. "The core is its only weak spot. It's in its chest, near the center of its mass."
"Easier said than done!" Victor yelled, leaping over a pool of lava.
---
Jayson's Gamble
Jayson's mind raced as he analyzed the Titan's movements. The core glowed faintly within its chest, pulsing with energy. He knew that destroying it was their only chance, but getting close enough would be nearly impossible.
"Lucas, Diane!" Jayson called out. "I need you to distract it! Keep its focus off me!"
The two nodded and immediately began attacking in concert. Lucas conjured a large bolt of lightning and struck the Titan right between its eyes. Meanwhile, Diane summoned a wall of ice that held the creature immobile.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Jayson ran toward the Titan, jumping on its leg and running up toward the chest. It was hot as fire, but he continued, hands scorched by gripping the molten rock.
"Hurry, Jayson!" Lyanna shouted. "It's getting angrier!"
The Titan roared, swiping at Jayson with its massive hand. He dodged just in time, using his sword to anchor himself to the creature's chest.
"This is it," he muttered, raising his sword. The blade glowed with a brilliant light as he channeled his energy into it.
And then, with a fierce cry, Jayson thrust the sword into the heart of the Titan. The impact was instantaneous. The core burst, and blinding light and heat exploded.
---
Victory and the Fire Artifact
With one final earth-shaking roar, the Titan collapsed. The molten body crumpled into glowing rocks, its core's last light extinguishing itself into darkness.
The group stood in stunned silence, their breaths heavy as they took in the sight. At the center of the rubble lay a glowing shard of molten crystal—the Artifact of Fire.
"We did it," Mike said, his voice filled with awe.
Jayson stepped forward, picking up the artifact. The moment his fingers touched it, a surge of energy coursed through him, filling him with warmth and power.
"This is only the beginning," Lyanna said, her gaze fixed on the artifact. "The other artifacts won't be any easier to retrieve."
"And we'll face them," Jayson replied, his voice steady. "No matter what it takes."
As the group began their descent from the peaks, the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon. The light chased away the shadows of the mountain, a small but meaningful reminder of the hope they carried—the hope of protecting their world from the dangers yet to come.
