Chapter 706: Chapter 704: Where’s Your Face?
"Synapsis!" The moment the protective labyrinth of Synapsis was breached, Muria sensed it immediately. As the construction of Synapsis progressed, so did Muria's control over it.
By now, whenever the outer defenses of Synapsis were compromised, Muria could sense it almost instantaneously. At the time, he was in the western regions of the Orbis Continent, clearing out undead and helping humans fend off waves of skeletons. Sensing the disturbance, Muria quickly tore open space and rushed back to the area where Synapsis was located.
But when Muria returned to Synapsis, he found no enemies. All he saw was a corner of Synapsis exposed to the outside world.
Four floating islands were billowing with black smoke, barely holding together. Seeing this, Muria's expression immediately darkened. He treated each of these islands like treasures, and now four of them had been badly damaged. "What happened? Who attacked Synapsis? Where are they now?"
"My lord, the attackers' ships looked exactly like the ghost ship you brought back," reported Mia, the dragonborn girl, as she approached him, noticing his fury.
"Barbossa!" Hearing that the attackers were using ghost ships, Muria immediately knew who it was. Only that ghost captain would dare risk offending both the Titans and the Golden Dragons by attacking him.
"How much damage did he cause?" After identifying his enemy, Muria calmed down and asked the question that concerned him most.
"Four islands had their defenses breached in the surprise attack. Nearly all the humans living on them were massacred, and twenty-seven giants who were stationed there have fallen. The basic infrastructure on the islands has been almost completely destroyed. Additionally, the spatial labyrinth in this area has been broken…"
"Is that all?" Muria was surprised. He had expected much worse, so the fact that only a few thousand human prisoners and a few dozen giants had died, with only four islands breached, was much less damage than he had anticipated.
"Was anything stolen?" Muria asked further.
"We haven't discovered anything missing. After the ghost fleet launched their attack, they retreated immediately," Mia said, hesitating as she recalled the disturbance on the central floating island.
"That doesn't make sense!" Muria frowned in confusion. As a legendary lich at the peak of his power, Barbossa should have done far more damage after discovering his lair. It didn't make sense for him to retreat after causing such minimal destruction. Was he afraid of Muria? Nonsense.
Given the current state of Synapsis, it was in no position to fend off an attack from a legendary lich. So what had caused this powerful lich to hesitate, allowing Synapsis to escape further harm? Muria fell into deep thought, trying to figure out what in Synapsis could have made even a peak legendary lich retreat.
"Your Highness, um…" Mia finally spoke up after a moment of hesitation. "There was a disturbance on the central floating island. After we were attacked, the central island was suddenly enveloped by a massive hurricane. We don't know what happened inside, but all communication with the giants stationed there has been lost."
"…" A vision of a giant white-feathered eagle flashed through Muria's mind, and he fell silent, realizing why the lich had suddenly withdrawn—the true master of the floating island had awakened.
"Take care of these islands, repair the labyrinth as quickly as possible, and then we'll relocate." After giving these instructions, Muria flew towards the massive central island above him. He flew slowly, a look of hesitation in his eyes. He was feeling guilty.
As he flew past the other islands, he finally reached the central island and found it as Mia had described—completely shrouded in a massive white hurricane, forming a giant sphere of wind. He couldn't see what was happening inside or sense any information.
"Damn you, Barbossa." Seeing the state of the island, Muria understood what had happened—the being that was supposed to sleep for several more centuries had been prematurely awakened.
"If it's fate, so be it." As Muria circled the developed and built-up islands around him, he gritted his teeth, spread his wings, and charged into the hurricane. Despite its terrifying appearance, the hurricane did not hinder Muria, and he passed through it smoothly.
As soon as he entered, Muria looked towards the Wind King's castle. He saw that the giants who had been stationed there were all lying unconscious on the ground.
However, that wasn't his primary concern. His gaze shifted to the southeast of the island, where a thousand-meter-tall twin tower stood. This was the portal to the Soros micro-world cluster, which Muria had conquered in the void. It was the resource hub for Synapsis and an absolutely essential structure.
Seeing that the portal was intact, Muria sighed in relief, but then his gaze turned to the white castle, and his expression grew serious. No matter how you looked at it, what he had done was a bit underhanded, but there was no turning back now. Muria landed and walked heavily towards the Wind King's castle.
As he walked towards the castle he had built, a famous ancient Chinese verse suddenly came to his mind:
*"The winds are bleak and the waters cold, the brave warrior sets out, never to return."*
A fully grown Wind King Eagle could easily overpower Muria in his current state, pinning him to the ground with no chance to resist.
Entering the castle and stepping into the council hall, Muria saw a miniaturized white-feathered giant eagle lounging lazily on the crystal throne that had once been his. As Muria entered, the eagle slightly turned its majestic head and cracked open its eyes, from which a blue glow seeped out, filling the hall with an overwhelming aura.
"The Wind King Eagle really has woken up!" Seeing the lazily sprawled eagle, any remaining hope Muria had vanished. He suddenly felt a bitter taste on his tongue.
But he didn't regret coming into the Wind King's castle. He had invested too many resources in the central island; the interdimensional portal was just one of many. He couldn't just abandon everything and flee. After all, he had poured a century of effort into Synapsis.
"You woke up too early!" Muria thought bitterly as the Wind King Eagle observed him with narrowed eyes. He hated the legendary lich, Barbossa, who had awakened this powerful being far too soon.
The Wind King Eagle was supposed to wake up several centuries later, by which time Muria would have reached the peak of the legendary rank himself. Then, even if the eagle woke up, Muria could show him just how powerful a Titan's punch could be. But now, the eagle was more likely to show him how sharp its claws were.
"Ahem, Brother Eagle, you're awake?" After a moment of silence, Muria thickened his skin and spoke first. "How was your sleep? Did you rest well? You see this castle? I built it to make sure no one disturbed your rest. I even stationed a regiment of cloud giants around it to ensure your slumber was undisturbed."
The Wind King Eagle blinked in surprise at Muria's words, then narrowed its majestic blue eyes further, scrutinizing Muria as if he was ready to flee at any moment before it finally spoke.
"I have never seen such a shameless Titan. You occupied the cloud islands I collected and buried me beneath the castle, and now you claim it was to protect me? Where's your face?"
"I didn't do anything to you, Brother Eagle," Muria coughed, trying to maintain his composure as he defended himself. "Don't make it sound so bad. I didn't 'occupy' your cloud islands; I just felt it was a waste to leave them empty, so I couldn't resist moving in and building something. See, I've made them much more beautiful than they were before."
