Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Wasn't It You Who Told Me to Shut Up?
[Is this wimp really Charles?] [How should I try to trick Raven when I see her?] [The Professor's situation is truly worrying.] [That stupid dog is always squatting outside the door. Is it waiting to bite me? I should buy some poison and kill it one of these days!] [Crap, I've spent all my salary. I can't even afford tap water this month. Maybe I should find a sugar mama to take care of me.]
A torrent of voices flooded into his mind. Charles, who hadn't received such an onslaught of emotions for a while, nearly collapsed under the strain. His legs gave way, and he slumped to the ground, clutching his head in agony.
"This is the kind of noise I hear every day. It's been there since I was born," Saiki Kusuo said, looking at Charles with his usual deadpan expression.
Charles knew he was trying to offer comfort, and as fellow telepaths, they could easily empathize with each other, but...
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not comforting you."
Charles: "..."
"I'm just telling you, I've been hearing all sorts of voices since I was born, and I'm still living a perfectly comfortable life. You, on the other hand, only started at nine years old. You're a grown man, throwing a tantrum, saying you can't handle it, saying it's too painful. Are you trying to get sympathy?"
Charles: "..." How I wish I could beat him to a pulp!
Saiki Kusuo suddenly changed his tack. "You're feeling angry, aren't you? You really want to beat me to death."
Charles: "..."
Saiki Kusuo: "Sucks to be you!"
Charles: "..."
Saiki Kusuo spread his hands. "Well, what can you do? You're just a powerless normal person. You'd better behave and not provoke me. Otherwise, if I get annoyed, I might just brainwash you into becoming Erik's little lackey. I'll make you utterly loyal to him, helping him do all sorts of evil deeds."
Erik, hearing this, said with a look of disgust, "Sorry, but the Brotherhood doesn't take in useless trash."
Charles: "..."
You! Damn! Bastards! Are! You! Looking! For! A! Fight! Or! What!
Charles was silent for a long moment, then declared righteously to everyone, "I don't think you'll be able to convince Raven, so it's better if I get my powers back."
Logan's expression when he looked at Saiki Kusuo changed. He couldn't help but give him a thumbs-up. "You're really something, Saiki."
Charles, now that he had his abilities back, was once again a cripple confined to a wheelchair. He used Cerebro to find Raven, and also helped Saiki Kusuo locate Kitty.
To avoid any unforeseen complications, Saiki Kusuo naturally wanted to go find Kitty. The others should be able to handle the Raven situation. Of course, worried that Erik might betray them halfway through, and even drag Raven along with him, Saiki Kusuo gave him the most vicious curse he could think of, from Erik's perspective.
"If you dare to cause any trouble, I'll curse you to be Charles's lackey for the rest of your life, working like a dog for him at the X-Mansion. I'll also brainwash you into becoming a gender-bent sissy."
Erik nodded obediently. "Don't worry, I'll convince Raven."
Just because I can't cause trouble myself doesn't mean I can't instigate others. Once I get my helmet, I'll gather my Brotherhood members and kill all those council members.
"You know I can read minds, yet you still dare to plot in your head? You've got some nerve, Erik. Then let's add another condition. If any of those council members are injured in any way, you'll lose your powers and become the human you hate the most."
Erik: "..."
Once upon a time, Erik had done this sort of thing himself. Now, the tables had turned. If he really became an ordinary human, not only would the humans not let him go, but the mutants he'd made enemies of would also tear him to pieces.
Erik glared at Saiki Kusuo and snarled, "You're ruthless." He boarded the plane, seething with anger.
Meanwhile, Raven, who had split from Erik and was now working alone, had infiltrated Trask's lab. After obtaining his upcoming itinerary, she began planning her assassination.
Soon, she realized she was being followed. Having learned counter-surveillance techniques, she easily caught the person tailing her.
"It's you." Seeing Erik, whom she hadn't seen in a long time, Raven's eyes flashed with surprise. But the knife in her hand remained firmly pressed against Erik's throat. If Erik showed any sign of making a move, she would slit his throat.
But Erik remained perfectly calm. He spoke to Raven like an old friend, peacefully reminiscing about the past.
"It's me, Raven. Long time no see. How have you been?"
"Hmph." Raven snorted coldly and retorted, "How do you think I've been? Are you trying to deceive me again? Shut up, Erik. I won't fall for it again."
If you really wouldn't fall for it, you would have killed me cleanly by now. You're just like Charles, too easily swayed by emotions, Raven, Erik thought. It was a pity that the kid with the bizarre red-and-green aesthetic had placed restrictions on him. Otherwise, with Raven, who had become even stronger, and himself, they could easily eliminate those guys.
"You think that just because I didn't follow you, I wouldn't know you're secretly cursing me in your head? Mr. Erik, it seems you really do want to become a human and Charles's little lackey."
Erik: "...Can you please stop invading other people's minds? You're even more disgusting than Charles."
Erik, feeling monitored, couldn't help but complain. However, Saiki Kusuo ignored his protests.
"Miss Raven has already formulated her plan to assassinate Councilman Trask. If you don't hurry up and stop her, and the councilman gets hurt, Mr. Erik, you'll really have to spend the rest of your life as an ordinary human, working like a dog for Charles."
"Shut up!" Erik interrupted, exasperated.
Who knows how to stop her? After becoming the leader of the Brotherhood, he'd only ever fanned the flames and brainwashed people. Cleaning up messes and taking care of the aftermath was Charles's job.
So, Erik shamelessly called out in his mind, "Hey, Charles, it's your turn."
He knew that Charles, now that he had his powers back, must be monitoring him constantly.
However, Charles, seemingly still angry about him leading Raven astray and staining his pure little sister's hands with blood, let out a sarcastic chuckle and said in a passive-aggressive tone,
"Right now, the only person she trusts, both body and soul, is you. How do you expect me to convince her? The one who needs to speak up is you, Erik."
That bastard Charles!
Seemingly sensing that Erik was hesitating, Raven, who had been tricked by him countless times, already suspected he was up to something. She tightened her grip on the knife. The tip pierced the skin of his neck, and Erik didn't need to look to know that he was bleeding.
"You know? I've known you for so many years, I know your habits like the back of my hand. Whenever you become silent and your eyes dart around, it means you're plotting something," Raven said, with the tone of someone who knew him intimately.
Normally, upon hearing this, Erik would appeal to her emotions and reason, first explaining his difficulties and his feelings for Raven. Once Raven showed a hint of softening, he would continue to persuade her, describing the atrocities humans had committed against mutants, thereby stirring up Raven's hatred. Finally, he would use Raven to achieve his own goals.
Unfortunately, he couldn't use such a good chess piece now, and Charles was clearly taking pleasure in watching him squirm. So, Erik said something completely out of character for a second-rate cult leader: "Wasn't it you who told me to shut up?"
Raven: "..."
