chapter 14
14. A street where two people walk
14.
The saintess woke up not because of the sharp sunlight that stung her eyebrows, but because it was too dark. She said she hadn’t woken up in the morning, and she would have opened her eyes at dawn and had to blink her eyes a few times. The more she blinked her eyes, the clearer it became that she thought it was just darkness.
Her own escort driver, sat still, staring at her window. Because of its size, the sunlight did not dare to disturb her sleep. With her back turned away from her, she stared out of her window without a moment’s motion, staring blankly at her drunken sleep. Moved to arouse
When I strained her arms to get her body up, the considerable weight that came with them nearly knocked her onto the bed. Ecilia’s dazed face still unraveled, her eyelids twitching heavily, she turned her head toward the one holding her.
Then, when I looked at the thing connected to her escort knight, her Death Knight’s wide back and her shoulders alternately, the color of her face began to return. It had a bit of a strawberry-like color to it, perhaps because it came back too much.
“Ah… !”
And it was only when her face suddenly turned strawberry-like that the saintess quietly exclaimed her exclamation about the situation she was currently in. At her exclamation, the head of her Death Knight, who had her back, turned slowly.
“Did you sleep well?”
“Huh?! Ah! That… ! I… yes….”
Death Knight did not hesitate to point out that her saintess stuttered her words and had a face like a strawberry. He just thought that anyone could have enough if they drank too much.
“Is there any uncomfortable place?”
“Uh… An uncomfortable place?”
“You drank too much the night before. Doesn’t drinking too much make you sick?”
Only then did the saintess notice that her throat was much drier than yesterday. With a slightly cracked voice, she spoke to the Death Knight.
“Ummm… hmm…. Come to think of it, my throat is a bit dry….”
“Neck? Oh, come to think of it, too much drinking causes thirst. I see.”
Zerpied, who managed to pull out an old knowledge that was no longer useful to him, that the body always asks for water after drinking too much, slowly let go of Esilia’s hand and moved his body. Suddenly, his hand, which had been intertwined like a part of her own, fell away, and Escelia weakly said ‘Ah…’. !’, But this time Zer Peied didn’t turn her head, as if he hadn’t heard.
The place where he stopped was the shelf placed between Esilia and his bed. Ecilia, who had been watching Zerfied quietly, knew what he was doing. As she saw him grab the water bottle on the shelf, Ecelia hurriedly raised her body to hold him back.
“Oh! No! I’ll drink! The driver doesn’t have to do that… Yo. This… ?”
Unfortunately, attempts to dissuade him were futile. Ecilia had to collapse on her bed with a ringing pain in her head. Zer Pied, who was about to pour water into her glass, stopped and called her name.
“Esilia?”
“Ugh…. Sorry…. I suddenly got a headache….”
“Because of the hangover. Just be comfortable.”
Jer Pied started pouring water into her glass again and invited her to lie down. Ecilia accepted the solicitation of her escort knight. I didn’t even have the strength to stand up again because of the headache.
“Esilia, can you raise only the upper body?”
At Jer P. Ed’s words, she tightened her arms and slowly raised her upper body. As her body tightened, a weak moan escaped from her mouth as her headache intensified.
“Ugh….”
Jer Pied watched her for a while and then slowly put her hand behind her back and supported her. At the sudden feeling of her weight behind her back, Eccilia opened her eyes wide and sighed once.
“Oh, no… that… I… I’m fine….”
“Never mind, it’s nothing.”
Escelia wanted to ask how the hell she could stop caring when her man had her hand on her own back, which was slightly wet with sweat, but she didn’t notice the glass of water held out in front of her eyes. She had to swallow the words that had risen in her throat.
“I… I can drink….”
“It’s okay, as I said before, it’s nothing special.”
In the end Celia had to take only her mouth in her water glass. She chugged her water over her own neck, pouring her slowly tilting glass. To have her water drunk by someone, without using her hands, something gave her a strange feeling.
As her slightly dry lips soaked in their luster, Escelia slowly opened her mouth to thank Zer Pied.
“That… thank you….”
Death Knight shook her head as if it wasn’t a big deal like her just before. She then looked out of her window again and opened her mouth.
“Today, you can rest in your room. Let me go out for a while. It won’t take very long. I’ll leave a part of me behind, so don’t worry too much.”
Essilia’s eyes widened as she heard her words.
“Huh?! Why, why? Go, I’ll go with you… ? There are still many things I want to see… !”
“You are going to go out after drinking too much. Rest in your room. I’ll buy the supplies I need for my next destination and come back.”
“Yeah, but oh…. Joe, can’t you come and see me for a bit… ? Gee, I’ll see you for a little while….”
“Esilia, it’s never a good idea to move around when you’re not feeling well…….”
Death Knight shut her mouth. Her saintess’s large eyes were trembling. Her appearance even made her look mournful at first glance.
Enough to remind Zerpied of last night.
…… Until when… I… I don’t know if he’s still alive….
Zerpied sighed and opened his mouth.
“Haa… …. Then, not now, but later, when things get better, I’ll leave.”
In an instant, Celia’s weeping face brightened. Nodding her head, she said, though she had to lie down on her bed, frowning at her headache, which intensified at the moment. Even so, a smile hung on Esilia’s lips. Conversely, her sigh escaped from Zer Pied’s mouth again.
Jer Pied held Celia in her bashful smile for a moment, then turned her body toward her window. Ecilia watched her own escort knight admiring the scenery outside her window. This time, too, he was admiring the scenery outside the window with his back straight and motionless. The saintess’s lips softened as she watched the Death Knight.
“… What do you want to do, knight?”
“Hmm?”
“You did what I wanted to do last night. Today, the driver, do what you want to do.”
“What is that…. There is nothing.”
“Even though you are always looking out the window when you come into the building? He said he enjoys seeing the world. I also enjoy seeing the world. It’s because I’m curious about the world the driver sees.”
“No… Ecilia, the important thing now is not that, but your safety.”
“There is nothing right now… ! Diervan is ruled by the Snow Knights, so there are no priests… And we don’t even have our permits anyway, so we can’t even go out of town….”
At her rational point, which once again brought up her permit, Jer Peed closed her mouth in embarrassment and ran one hand over the back of her neck.
After a moment of silence, a reluctant answer came out of his mouth as if he was sighing.
“…… Then I would like to take a walk around the city.”
–
The afternoon of the second day of the festival celebrating the safe return of the Snow Knights, who had been on patrol outside the city, was unexpectedly quiet. The city boasted a relaxed atmosphere that made it hard to believe the noisy scene of yesterday.
Only a few people were walking along the street where the stalls were lined up, and it was hard to find people who insisted that bargaining was done not through rationality but through comparison of volume.
As befits the city of a strange knight, the citizens of Diervan were not afraid to push themselves to the limit. In the arena where life and death depended on each other, in other words, a restaurant/tavern, they bravely tested their limits and collapsed satisfactorily. The owners of the arena were no exception to that life-and-death fight.
For this reason, most of those on the streets of Diervan were either guards who had to lead an ascetic life that prevented them from pushing the limits of their careers, or children and their parents who were too young to experience the limits yet. Zerfied had to feel quite strange as he walked through such a quiet street.
The fact that you are walking in a city that has not yet been destroyed. With one sweep of the stone wall, he awkwardly began to step his foot into the alleyway. Monotonous shape, but tall buildings. Its unique roughness gathers together to create the grandeur of rough steel that seems unpolished.
‘… It feels like taking a walk.’
When was walking around the city a thing of the past? To him, a city was more like tearing down and destroying, not walking around inside. What he was accustomed to was not the grandeur of this preservation, but the decay emanating from the ruins.
Collapse, smoke rises, fire soars. Magnificence is just a low memory of the city being there.
Because that’s where he was.
“Knight! It’s not fun to look at too many places!”
Zerpied hurriedly turned his head to where the sound came from while staring blankly at the building. He ran into his contractor, who had gone before him, around the corner of the alleyway.
“Wait, don’t go alone!”
As I quickly turned the corner, I came across a wide plaza opposite to the alleyway I had just been on. It was a square of the same shape as yesterday. The difference was that it was smaller, with a fountain in the center, and the Knights Building building behind it.
“This is….”
” It is a ‘fountain that makes wishes come true’. It was also in the capital where I lived.”
“A fountain that makes wishes come true?”
“Come here, come here.”
Celia grabbed one of his fingers and pulled it gently with her laughter. Because of the difference in her physique, naturally she couldn’t pull, but for some reason he moved her as if being led by the little woman. Jer Pied concluded that it was because the appearance of a saintess of innocence smiling at him in the sunlight was literally ‘dazzling’ about the fact that puzzled him.
Because she has especially fair skin.
And even now, handfuls of sunlight were running at random through her rippling golden hair. He thought it was worth it.
Embarrassingly, her figure, which seemed to be bathed in all the sunlight, created a shape that only she could see. The sight of her afternoon sun shining straight down upon her gave the illusion that she was wearing a garment woven of her own light.
When he blinked once to get out of the glare, the Death Knight was already in front of the fountain. Ecilia smiled once more and placed her coin in his hand.
“Coins?”
“Take a coin and throw it into the fountain. And make a wish. Then this fountain will grant your wish.”
“Wish?”
“Yes, that is the wish of the knight. Give it a try. The driver must have something you want too, right?”
Thinking it was somewhat absurd, the Death Knight threw a coin into the fountain with the thought that came to mind. Citizens threw a lot of coins last night, and there were quite a few coins piled up at the bottom of the fountain. The fairy tale coin flew away with a high-pitched sound and sank heavily into the water. The Death Knight, who was staring at it, thought it was absurd. There is no way your wish will come true with such nonsense.
It’s a wish that won’t come true anyway.
A cheerful sound fell beside his sinking coin. Looking to her side, her saintess was arranging the arm she had just thrown with a confident expression on her face.
“Hehe… long time no see. Do this too When I was little, I still did a lot with her older sister…. After she became a saint, she never did.”
Esilia whispered.
“Do people seriously believe in these things?”
“I’m just throwing it in the hope that half of it will come true… Still, Miss Beluk did. If you really wish and wish… If you try, you will make it. I believe it will. There is no wish that cannot be fulfilled no matter how hard you really wish for it. Isn’t it okay to sincerely believe in rain? Wait, maybe… Aren’t you serious, driver?”
“…… I just wished for nothing.”
“Wait, why are you talking one beat slow? Oh, knight, you are ashamed!”
Escelia confidently placed her hands on her waist, closed her eyes and nodded her head in understanding. To her saintly appearance, the Death Knight simply responded by asking the same question.
“Then what did you wish for?”
“I wished for the knight’s wish to come true.”
“…… Me?”
Confusion fluttered across the Death Knight’s face.
Me? Why? Why? Basically… Aren’t we just a contractual relationship? Wasn’t that relationship where each other got what they wanted? But why me?
Other contractors flash in my memory. Death Knight had a conversation with them who were asleep in her memory. A conversation so simple, so alike, that it passes quickly. Befitting their position as contractors, it was a conversation with only the goals of the contractors in mind. Of course, there was no ‘him’ in the conversation.
The saintess smiled softly at him, who only blinked blankly in her eyes.
“Um, um… That’s what I asked for, but… Are you protecting me diligently? He works so hard, but at least begging for the driver’s wish to come true… I wonder if it’s okay. Besides, today is also the day for the driver to do what he wants to do.”
Death Knight should have frowned upon her. The intense sunlight of the afternoon was bathing her in her golden light. The sunlight passing through her hair with the wind scattered across her vision. Her saintly smile grew wider. The more she smiles, the more the sunlight bounces along with her movements.
Death Knight couldn’t stand the glare that filled his vision and eventually he closed his eyes. I feel like I’m losing my mind because I’ve seen too much intense light from earlier. The voice of the saintess who asks, ‘Knight?’, Echoes from afar like her echo. Her soft touch rests on his hand. It wasn’t far Clearly, she was holding herself back.
She thought that it wouldn’t be okay to rely on her small touch, even for a moment, as the death knight felt more and more distant from her.
