The Dark Knight Of Another World

Chapter 5: Discovery (4)

The city gates loomed ahead, their iron frames reinforced with intricate carvings that seemed almost ceremonial. Bruce approached cautiously, his newly modified suit blending better with the muted tones of the city. He spotted Lyra waiting near the edge of the gate, leaning against a wooden post with a casual confidence that belied her sharp gaze.

"You're late," she said, pushing off the post and crossing her arms.

Bruce adjusted his gloves. "You're early."

Lyra smirked but didn't press the point. Instead, she gestured toward the dirt road leading out of the city. "The site's about two hours west, near the old mines. Some of the locals claim they've seen shadows moving there at night. Weird stuff—disappearances, animals acting crazy, that sort of thing."

"Rumors?" Bruce asked.

"Mostly. But there's enough truth to them that the guild posted the job," she replied. "You ready?"

Bruce gave a slight nod. "Let's move."

...

The journey was quiet at first, the two moving quickly through the rolling fields that stretched beyond Eryndor. Bruce kept his senses sharp, scanning the horizon for threats. Lyra seemed to sense his tension.

"You're jumpy," she said.

"Cautious," Bruce corrected.

"You always this serious?"

"Always."

Lyra laughed softly. "You're either going to get yourself killed or become a legend."

Bruce didn't respond. He was too focused on the terrain, noting the subtle shifts in the earth and the faint tracks leading toward the mines.

The system interface flashed.

[Proximity Alert: Abyssal Energy Detected.]

Bruce stopped abruptly. "We're close."

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "How do you—"

"Call it a hunch."

They moved slower now, sticking to the shadows as they approached the entrance to the mines. The structure was ancient, its wooden supports cracked and rotting. A faint, unnatural hum resonated from within.

Lyra frowned. "This place gives me the creeps."

"Stay close," Bruce said, stepping inside.

The mine was pitch-black, but Bruce's cowl adjusted, enhancing his vision with faint outlines and heat signatures. The walls pulsed faintly with dark energy, and the ground was littered with broken tools and shattered carts.

The system chimed.

[Environmental Hazard Detected: Abyssal Corruption.]

[Warning: Prolonged exposure may cause debilitation.]

Bruce clenched his fists. "Whatever's down here isn't natural."

They descended deeper, their footsteps echoing through the cavern. Bruce's senses flared just as the system issued another alert.

[Enemy Detected: Abyssal Spawn.]

The creature lunged from the shadows, its twisted form resembling a humanoid mass of black tendrils and jagged bones. Lyra reacted first, drawing her dagger and slashing at its limbs. The creature screeched, its voice echoing unnaturally.

Bruce moved in, activating Phantom Strike. He blurred forward, striking the creature's core. It reeled, but not before swiping at him with razor-sharp claws. Bruce barely dodged, feeling the wind of the attack against his face.

"Watch out!" Lyra shouted, stabbing another tendril that shot toward her.

The system chimed.

[Skill Unlock: Shadow Bind.]

[Effect: Immobilize enemies temporarily using shadow energy.]

Bruce focused, extending his hand toward the creature. Shadows surged from the ground, wrapping around its limbs and pinning it in place.

"Now!" Bruce shouted.

Lyra didn't hesitate, driving her dagger into the creature's core. It let out a final screech before collapsing into ash.

[Enemy Defeated: Abyssal Spawn.]

[Rewards: +75 Shadow Points, Abyssal Fragment.]

Lyra stepped back, breathing heavily. "You're full of surprises, aren't you?"

Bruce didn't respond, his eyes scanning the cavern for more threats. The system had gone quiet, but the pulsating energy suggested they weren't done yet.

…..

They pressed deeper into the mine until they reached a large chamber filled with twisted, black veins pulsing along the walls. In the center stood a massive, grotesque creature—twice the size of the spawn they had just fought.

[Boss Encounter: Abyssal Guardian.]

[Level: 10.]

Lyra cursed under her breath. "I don't like this."

Bruce stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Neither do I."

The Guardian let out a deafening roar, its body shifting as more tendrils sprouted from its form. Bruce felt the weight of the encounter, but he also felt something else—determination.

He pulled up his stats.

[Current Shadow Points: 225.]

Bruce quickly allocated points.

Strength: +3

Agility: +2

Endurance: +2

Shadow Affinity: +3

[Stats Updated.]

Power surged through him as the system confirmed the changes. He turned to Lyra. "Stay behind me and look for openings. We take it down fast."

Lyra grinned despite the tension. "I like your style."

The Guardian roared again, and Bruce launched himself forward.
