The Curse of Being Hated Has Been Lifted

chapter 22

22 – Severing Ties

Under the grace of Viscount Asrian, there were two children.

One, a cute and lovable daughter named Royan, who wouldn’t cause any pain even if you stared at her, and the other, a son who made you feel worse every time you looked at him.

Around the age of 10, his son changed.

No good words were heard about him anywhere, only news of causing trouble.

The child who was polite and well-mannered had turned into a heartless being, putting sharp thorns against everyone.

Thinking that it might be due to a wrong upbringing, Logan had tried discipline, but it always ended in failure.

From his perspective, Logan always tried to avoid his own mistakes and never showed the viscount-like demeanor expected of a son of the noble family.

In his heart, Logan didn’t want to send him to the academy, but one day, he suddenly announced that he had enrolled in the prestigious academy, leaving Logan with no choice but to send him.

He, too, was sent to the academy because Logan vowed to go through his academic life with his own strength, without borrowing money from the family. If he had requested tuition from the family, they might not have sent him.

Such a son was now demanding isolation during the semester.

“It’s absurd.”

He was a child who didn’t get on one’s nerves, but still, he was the only son.

And whether he had come to his senses or not, he seemed brighter, and the hesitation didn’t feel as significant.

“Are you here to spout nonsense like that?”

It would be the same for commoners, but cutting ties with family was a very embarrassing thing for nobles. They had treated Logan as a child so far, but not completely cutting ties was for that reason.

Completely rejecting Logan would not only bring great disgrace to Logan but also to the entire Asrian Viscount family.

“It’s not nonsense. It’s a very, very efficient proposal that the Viscount seems to like. I’m glad to be free from the shackles of the family, and the Viscount can get rid of me, a thorn in his side. Isn’t it mutually beneficial?”

“If you’re going to talk nonsense, go back to the academy right away. Do you think I raised you to hear such things?”

The moment Logan heard the Viscount’s words, the fuse in his head was cut off.

He had tried to control his anger and speak rationally, but the feeling of blood rushing backward could be experienced firsthand the moment Asrian Viscount dared to say that he raised him.

“Sir, that’s not true. How can you claim that you raised Logan like that?”

If Repair hadn’t spoken first from behind, he might have exploded without father or anyone.

“Since the age of nine, Logan practically grew up alone.”

In response to Repair’s words, Asrian Viscount couldn’t find a suitable reply.

Looking back carefully, Logan lived a life no different from those who actually had no parents.

He was given a room in the worst part of the mansion, with poor insulation, and he was never properly fed.

“Of course, that doesn’t mean I agree with your opinion of cutting ties with the family, Logan. Your uncle knows well that there’s a lot bound to the family, but ignoring the family’s radiance is not something I can easily dismiss.”

“I apologize to my uncle, but I’ve never basked in the glory of that illustrious lineage.”

So far, being a part of the family has had its advantages.

At least, being the eldest son of the Asrian Viscount family background spared Logan from the worst tragedy of being randomly killed on the streets.

Because of this, Logan lived with resentment towards the Asrian Viscount family but had no intention of severing ties with them.

However, the situation had changed.

The curse was lifted, and the worst-case scenario of dying on the streets was now avoided.

Now, Logan no longer wanted to be shackled by the Asrian Viscount family name.

“Do you not understand the weight of the name Asrian attached to your own? What remains when you take Asrian out of your name?”

Though Rafael spoke with some emotional intensity, Logan remained unswayed.

“Even without the glory of Asrian, I can still live well. I have lived well so far.”

“Logan, calm down for a moment.”

As the two seemed headed toward a confrontation, Repair intervened to mediate.

“On paper, erasing the name from the family register is not easy unless you’ve committed a serious crime. It takes time and is a complex process. So, for now, consider leaving the name on paper and just cutting ties with the family.”

Understanding the gravity of the situation, Repair spoke in a serious tone, unlike his usual demeanor.

“My desire to leave the family will not change, no matter what happens.”

Rafael felt uncomfortable under the clear gaze from Logan.

“Do as you please. Even if you declare independence, it’s not like you’re leaving entirely. It might be best not to expect any support from the family.”

“I haven’t received any support until now, so it’s amusing to suddenly consider expecting it. But I’ll take what is rightfully mine.”

“To say you’ll take it as if there’s something entrusted to you.”

“You’ve taken my share of the earnings a few times, haven’t you? I’ll take what’s rightfully mine.”

Logan wasn’t a large sum objectively, but there had been several occasions when Logan had been deprived of the money he had earned with difficulty by his family.

In the current situation where he could earn dozens of silvers a day without working, it was almost meaningless money, almost the size of a penny. But this was a problem connected to Logan’s pride.

It was also a process to find out how the family would view Logan, whose curse had been lifted.

“You didn’t take the money, did you?”

Ignoring the words of Rephael coming from behind, he glared at Raphael, and then a voice came from behind.

“Give it back, honey.”

The news of Logan’s return also reached Rephael and Royan, who were peacefully practicing swordsmanship in the training ground. There was no way the hostess of the Asrian Viscount, Lady, could have missed the news.

Rather than the viscount, who was making a face close to anger, she had a vacant expression.

‘No matter how much she hated her son, cutting off all ties seems to be quite a shock.’

“It’s been a while.”

She, who had been ordered through one of the maids who had gathered in the commotion to bring the money, approached Logan like a broken doll.

Although maternal love suddenly returned to Logan, whose curse had been lifted, she didn’t know how to approach him because of the sins she had committed against him until now.

“That’s true.”

She was the one who spoke to Logan in a squeaky tone, but her returning words were nothing but cruel.

Compared to Raphael, she was better, but she was still an embarrassing opponent for Logan.

Emotionally, she was a more detestable opponent than Raphael. While Raphael occasionally showed a cold side to Royan, his mother, Sylvia Asrian, was a truly warm person to others.

Even now, it wasn’t easy to endure, but for young Logan, having a warm mother who only hated him was a really big wound.

“Even if you go, you’ll sleep today, right?”

“I’ll leave right away.”

That’s why it was too embarrassing to talk to her.

Until the curse was lifted, it felt so strange to see someone so malevolent suddenly speak with such a compassionate expression.

“And perhaps there won’t be another occasion.”

There was no more desire to continue the conversation.

Didn’t want to linger any longer in this space that was perfect only in its solitude.

It wasn’t that there was no desire for vengeance, but that revenge wasn’t something to pursue at this moment.

While she remained frozen in her thoughts, a servant brought forth a purse of coins.

“Take this, at least…”

The purse seemed quite hefty. It looked like it might contain dozens of gold coins at the very least.

It would be fine to take all this money.

There would be no sense of obligation.

Considering all that had been done to him by this lineage, even if he took all that money, it would never truly compensate for what this family had inflicted upon him.

“I’ll take only this much.”

The money Logan withdrew from the rather hefty purse amounted to just a few dozen silvers.

It was exactly the sum that had been taken from Logan by Viscount Asrian, and even though he could have taken more, it was Logan’s stubbornness to take only that much.

It was about proving to himself that he could succeed even without anything from Viscount Asrian.

Initially, he had wanted to discard the Asrian name altogether and truly grow on his own, but regrettably, he was hindered by the Repairs’ hands.

“Have a meal before you go.”

“I refuse. Of course, you wouldn’t even consider it, but I fear I might vomit if we were to dine together.”

Seeing Logan assert a strong barrier, a warmth never shown before, her body stiffened entirely.

“I’ll take my leave now. I’ve truly despised this whole time, and we’ll meet again in a more legal setting someday.”
