Chapter 5: So Cold It Burns
Well, after that awkward welcome from the village owner—who seemed more interested in igami than anything —he must have realized how rude he'd come across. You could almost see the gears turning in his head as he tried to backtrack. With a forced smile, he offered us a place to stay for the night, claiming it was the best inn in the village. It felt like he was trying to smooth things over, but the gesture came off as more of a patch-up job than anything heartfelt. Still, Igami said she wants to stop by, and the idea of a warm bed sounded too good to pass up. So, we nodded and followed his directions, though the whole exchange left a bit of a sour taste. It's funny how people sometimes scramble to fix a bad first impression, isn't it ? Hehe
We finally found the inn, we immediately walked into it, the village owner even gave us a specific room, the door creaking softly behind us, and the warmth of the fireplace immediately wrapped around me. I just flopped onto the bed, letting out a long sigh as I sank into the surprisingly soft mattress. For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the wooden beams on the ceiling, my mind in a blank state
But then I noticed Igami. She wasn't relaxing like I was. No, she was standing in the middle of the room, her eyes darting around like she was inspecting every nook and cranny. It was almost funny how serious she looked, like the inn might suddenly sprout hidden dangers if she blinked too long.
"Seems safe" she said finally, her voice calm and smooth, the kind of voice that makes you feel like everything's going to be okay. It had this quiet confidence to it, like she'd seen it all before and wasn't easily rattled.
I propped myself up on my elbow, curious. "Are you checking for traps?" I asked, half-joking but also genuinely wondering.
She turned to me..."No" she said, her tone light but firm. "I'm checking for stun spells. Those are way worse." She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly as if she were weighing how much to tell me. Then, almost playfully, she added "I can use some level of stun spell, you know. See?"
Before I could even process what she meant, she raised her hand, and suddenly, this intricate, glowing spell circle appeared in her palm. It was insane to say the least—lines and symbols weaving together in a pattern so complex it made my head spin just trying to follow it. I look at it for some seconds and the spell name instantly appeared in my mind [Max Intimidate: Shell Shock], a max level spell...those cost so much but they are definitely worth it, a fireball can cause some destruction but a max fireball can pretty much wipe a large house out of existence.
After a while, we finally got everything in the room sorted out. Once she was satisfied, she just stood by the window, arms crossed, staring out into the night. The silence between us was heavy, the kind that makes you feel like you should say something but you're not sure what. Her face was beautiful under the moonlight...
"Igami, follow me" I said suddenly, breaking the silence. I didn't wait for her to respond or even look at her as I turned and walked out of the room. My boots thudded softly against the wooden floor as I made my way down the narrow hallway, past the flickering lanterns that cast weird, dancing shadows on the walls. I pushed open the heavy inn door, and the cool night air hit me like a splash of water, sharp and refreshing.
The village was quiet, almost eerily so. The streets were empty, bathed in the pale light of the moon. Without thinking too much about it, I headed toward the edge of the woods, the same path we'd taken earlier. The crunch of leaves under my boots was the only sound as I walked, my breath puffing out in little clouds in the chilly air. I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I could feel her behind me, steady and silent, like a shadow. Igami was following, just like I knew she would.
She is mine anyway...
After getting to a more open place I sit down, igami looking at me like she is waiting for another order and soon I fulfilled her desire to obey "you will protect me, I will not move a inch." I say and she just nods, I open my hand 'a spell to attract monsters...oh I got it' so my spells just come to me naturally depending on my objective...soon enough a spell circle appear on my hand and I point it at the floor in front of me
It didn't take long for a whole tribe of goblins to appear, some holding daggers other holding bow and arrows, then I feel something different... something cold like...ice ?
[Ice Spear]!
That's all I hear before Igami start her massacre, she doesn't stop, shooting spears and even using some high level spells such as [Permafrost] and [Water Chains]...some hours later she is done, and the scary part is...She didn't sweat a drop.
After that…literal massacre Igami did—I'm still not entirely sure what to call it, but it was equal parts incredible and terrifying—we walked back to our room at the inn in silence. My mind was still spinning, replaying the way she'd moved, the way the energy around her had shifted, and how effortlessly she'd taken control of the situation. It was hard to wrap my head around, honestly.
When we got back to the room, Igami didn't say much. She just gave me a small nod, like she knew exactly what I was thinking, and disappeared into the bathroom. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the wall, trying to process everything that had just happened. The sound of running water filled the room, and I found myself oddly comforted by it. After everything, something as mundane as her taking a bath felt… normal. Grounding, even.
When she finally came out, it was like she'd stepped out of a completely different world. Her maid outfit, which had been pretty much painted completely red with goblin blood, was now spotless—crisp, clean, and perfectly pressed, like it had just come out of a tailor's shop. Her hair was damp, falling in soft waves around her face, and she smelled like soap and something faintly floral, like lavender. She looked… refreshed, almost serene, like nothing had happened at all.
I must have been staring because she tilted her head slightly, a small, knowing smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Cleaning spell, my master" she explained, her voice calm and matter-of-fact, like she was talking about the weather. "It's quite useful for situations like this."
I blinked at her "A cleaning spell?" I repeated, my voice tinged with disbelief. "You..."
She nodded, her expression softening, like she found my confusion amusing. "Yes" she said simply. "It's a basic spell, really. Nothing too complicated. It saves time and ensures everything stays… presentable." She gestured to her outfit, the fabric pristine and flawless, not a single wrinkle or speck of dirt in sight.
I couldn't help but laugh. "Of course you have a cleaning spell" I said, shaking my head. "Why am I even surprised at this point?"
Igami's smile widened, just a little, and she gave a small, graceful shrug. "It's one of the many perks of having me around" she said lightly, her tone teasing but warm. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll prepare some tea. It's been a long day."
